Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang, "In the Air Tonight", a song about a bitter breakup with between the singer and his ex-wife?

Answer: Phil Collins

Released in 1980, "In the Air Tonight" was written by Phil Collins about the bitter break-up between him and his ex-wife. The single marked the start of Collins' solo career, and has since become one of the classic pop singles of all time.

Cadburys used the song for a chocolate advert, featuring a gorilla on a drum kit, playing Collins famous drum solo, from where the song builds up to the moment the drum solo starts.
2. ABBA recorded the song, "The Winner Takes it All".

Answer: True

The song was released in 1980. "The Winner Takes it All" is a bitter ballad about the break-up of a marriage, and subsequent divorce. Although written at the time band members Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog had themselves divorced, both denied the song was about their divorce.
3. In Lesley Gore's song, "It's My Party", what was the name of the boyfriend who vanished from the party, only to return with another girl?

Answer: Johnny

In the song, "It's My Party", Lesley Gore sings about a teenage girl at her birthday party. At the party, her boyfriend Johnny vanishes for a while, at the same time as another guest called Judy. When both return, Judy is wearing Johnny's class ring, a sign that Johnny was now going out with Judy.

Although there had been versions of the song before Gore had her hit in 1963, it is Lesley Gore's version that is best known. Gore then followed up the song with, "Judy's Turn to Cry", where Gore sings that the girl makes Johnny jealous at the party by kissing another boy, prompting a fight and Johnny returning to his former girlfriend, dumping Judy.
4. Which Motown star recorded "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted"?

Answer: Jimmy Ruffin

Released by Jimmy Ruffin (older brother of The Temptations signer, David Ruffin), "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted", is a song about a break-up of a relationship and the quest to find a new love.

Released in 1966, the song became Jimmy Ruffin's biggest hit of his career. A number of artistes, such as Joe Cocker, Boy George and Westlife have made their own cover versions of the song.
5. Which famous pop star sang "Heartbreak Hotel"?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Released in 1956, "Heartbreak Hotel" became a major hit for Elvis Presley during his early career, reaching number one in both the US Billboard Hot 100, and Country and Western charts - even though the song itself has a strong Blues influence.

The song was inspired by a newspaper report of a young man who had checked into a hotel, destroyed all his identity papers, before committing suicide by jumping out of a window. The man's suicide note was said to have contained a single line stating, "I walk a lonely street".
6. Which British pop group had a hit with the song "Can't Stand Losing You"?

Answer: The Police

When released in 1978 by The Police, "Can't Stand Losing You" was only a minor hit, reaching Number 42 in the UK charts. It was not until 1979 when the song was re-released that it broke into the top ten of the UK charts

The song itself deals with a heartbroken man who had gone through a bitter break-up with his ex-girlfriend, but wanted to rekindle their relationship, only to be snubbed.

The cover for the single drew criticism when it was released, as it featured lead singer, Sting, standing on a block of ice with a noose around his neck, and an electric fire to melt the ice. As such, when the single was re-released it had a group shot of the band.
7. In Ray Peterson's song, "Tell Laura I Love Her", how does the main character die, leaving his girlfriend broken-hearted?

Answer: In a motor racing accident

The song, "Tell Laura I Love Her", is about a teenage man (Tommy) wanting to marry his girlfriend (Laura), and in order to get the money need for a wedding ring, Tommy enters a motor race. It is whilst racing his car that it crashes, and bursts into flames, his last words being, "Tell Laura I love her, my love for her will never die".

Originally, the song was about a young man who had died during a rodeo, but was changed because of similarities to the theme of another song.

Released in 1960, the song reach the top ten in the US for Peterson, but was pulled from release in the UK because it was deemed as being tasteless and vulgar. It was only when the song was covered by Ricky Valance did it reach number one in the UK charts.
8. Which group sang the song "SOS"?

Answer: ABBA

Released in 1975, "SOS" helped launch ABBA's global career as a pop group, becoming their first international hit since "Waterloo" (which won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest). In the song, the main protagonist declares that they are still in love with their partner, wanting to put things right, not understanding where things went wrong.

ABBA band member, Agnetha Fältskog also recorded a version of the song on her solo album in 1975, and despite lack of promotion, it reached the top of the Swedish charts.
9. What was the subject of Eric Clapton's song, "Tears in Heaven"?

Answer: The death of his son

10. Which Australian soap star had a hit with "Too Many Broken Hearts"?

Answer: Jason Donovan

Released in 1989, "Too Many Broken Hearts" was recorded by Jason Donovan for record producers Stock Aitkin and Waterman. Donovan himself has gone on to have successful career in musicals, as well as occasional TV work.
11. Which three-letter word, progressive rock band had a hit with "Owner of a Lonely Heart"?

Answer: Yes

Released in 1983, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" went on to become the biggest hits for Yes, and was a change in style from their early, "Prog Rock" origins.
By the time of its release, Yes had already gone through a number of line up changes.

Reformed from the band Cinema, two of the original members that founded Yes - plus one other band member - recruited Jon Anderson. At the suggestion of Cinema's record company they changed their name to Yes, given the band now had four former Yes band members. The "new" Yes, then recorded their comeback album, "90125" - the serial number of the album released by Atco Records - which contained the track, "Owner of a Lonely Heart".
12. Dionne Warwick sang a song called "Heartbreaker".

Answer: True

Written by Maurice and Barry Gibb, "Heartbreaker" went on to become Dionne Warwick's biggest commercial hit of the 1980s. Although not a favourite song of Warwick, she recorded it, as she trusted the Bee Gees judgment it would be a success.

By this time, Warwick was already a successful singer, having recorded such hits as "I Say a Little Prayer", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again".
13. Puff Daddy released a song entitled, "I'll Be Missing You", that had a sample from the number one single by The Police entitled, "Every Breath You Take".

Answer: True

Produced by Puff Daddy, "I'll Be Missing You" took its title from a line from "Every Breath You Take", which was a hit for The Police in 1983. The song was a tribute to the late rap star, the Notorious B.I.G, who shot in the same year as the song was released in 1997. Faith Evans - the widow of Notorious B.I.G - sang the familiar chorus sampled from "Every Breath You Take"

The original song by The Police, though, was a very different song in its subject. Although about a person who had lost their lover, this person turned into an obsessed stalker.
14. Who first recorded the song "Without You"?

Answer: Badfinger

Originally recorded by Badfinger, the song was released on their, "No Dice" album in 1970. The song was written by band members Peter Ham and Tom Evans, but not released as a single. It was in part inspired by the relationship Evans' love-hate relationship with his wife, combining Ham's sentimental verse, with Evans', harsh, bitter-sweet chorus.

Although recorded by some 180 different artists, the most famous covers are by Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey. Both versions got the number one spot in the UK charts.
15. Which famous singing duo recorded "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'"?

Answer: The Righteous Brothers

Released in 1964, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" became a number one hit for The Righteous Brothers, (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield).

The duo got their name, The Righteous Brothers, from when they were performing with a group known as The Paramours. It was whilst performing at a gig, a person stood up and called out, "that was righteous, brothers!".

The song itself was co-written by Phil Spector, featuring his famous, "wall of sound" style of music.
