Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Scottish based Irish band released the single 'Chasing Cars' in 2006 reaching number six on the UK charts and number five on the Billboard charts? (Remember the theme of this quiz)

Answer: Snow patrol

Snow Patrol were formed in 1994 under the name Shrug this was changed in 1995 to Polar Bear (or Polarbear) and finally to Snow Patrol in 1997.

*Useless information* The band's fourth album 'Eyes Open', from which 'Chasing Cars' was released has been classified a 7x platinum seller in the UK, 7x platinum in Ireland and a platinum seller in Australia.
2. Which song contains the lyrics: 'Oh! the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful and since we've no place to go...'

Answer: Let it Snow

'Let it Snow' (or 'Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow') was written by Sammy Cahn in 1945. It was originally recorded by Vaughan Monroe and reached number one on the Billboard music chart in 1946. Since then it has been recorded by numerous artists including Andy Williams, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Carly Simon who sang a reverse of the song from the guest's point of view rather than the host.

*Useless information* Although this is typically thought of as a 'Christmas' song, Christmas is never mentioned in the lyrics.
The song was written in July 1945 in Hollywood, on one of the hottest days on record.
3. Anne Murray had a 1970 hit with a song called 'Snowbird'; which country was she born in though?

Answer: Canada

'Snowbird' has been recorded by many artistes including Elvis Presley. Anne Murray's version is probably the most well known, it reached number 23 in the UK, number two in Canada, number one on the Billboard 'Adult Contemporary' chart and was a top ten hit on the US Country chart.

*Useless information* Anne Murray is a holder of the 'Companion of the Order of Canada'(CC) and also 'The Order of Nova Scotia' (ONS) for showing 'the highest degree of merit to Canada and humanity'.
She was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach number one on the U.S. charts, and also the first to earn a Gold record.
4. 'Frosty the Snowman' had corncob pipe, a button nose and two eyes made of coal. True or False?

Answer: True

Who doesn't know the song 'Frosty the Snowman'? This song was first recorded in 1950 by Gene Autry and the Cass County boys.

*Useless information* This song has been recorded by many people since it was first released. The original Gene Autry version reached number seven when it was released in the US, but the first version to reach number one in the US (on the US Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks) was recorded 57 years later (in 2007) when Kimberley Locke recorded her version.
5. Russ Conway reached number seven on the UK charts in 1959 with a song called 'Snow...' What is the missing word? (Think about it and don't be in too much of a hurry?)

Answer: Coach

'Snow Coach', Slow Coach.. the best I could do for a clue, sorry!
Russ Conway was a pianist who had two UK number one instrumental hits in 1959 and spent a cumulative total of 83 weeks in the UK charts that year.

*Useless information* Russ Conway served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) for his work clearing mines in the Aegean Sea.
6. What could The Red Hot Chili Peppers have to do with snow, I hear you ask. Well they once released a single called 'Snow (Hey Ho)'; what year was this released in the UK?

Answer: 2006

'Snow, (Hey Ho)' was released from the band's double album 'Stadium Arcadium' in 2006.
*Useless information* 'Snow (Hey Ho)' became a number one hit in the US making it a record breaking 11th number one for the group (on the US Modern Rock charts).
7. 'Snow is falling, all around me, children playing having fun' are the first few lines of 'Merry Christmas Everyone', a number one Christmas song from 1985 that was sung by which British singer from the 1970s / 1980s?

Answer: Shakin' Stevens

'Merry Christmas Everyone' was Shakin' Steven's fourth UK number one hit and has been a 'staple' of British Christmas songs ever since.

*Useless information* 'Merry Christmas Everyone' was originally to have been released in time for Christmas 1984 but was 'held back' for a year so that it would not clash with 'Do They Know It's Christmas' a charity single recorded by Band Aid.
8. Who was 'Dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh'?

Answer: None of these

'Jingle Bells' does not mention Santa Claus, Father Christmas or the Christmas Fairy anywhere within the lyrics, the only person mentioned, in the original version, is Miss Fanny Bright in the second verse.

*Useless information* Jingle Bells was originally entitled 'One Horse Open Sleigh' when it was written in 1857. While most people think it to be a Christmas song, according to the 'Readers Digest', it was written as a song for Thanksgiving.
9. A bit of a tricky one this. 'Winter Wonderland' is a Christmas classic known by nearly everybody. How many times does the word 'Snow' (including 'Snowman') appear in the song as sung by Perry Como? (Lyrics as confirmed by 'Lyrics.Com' and 'mp3lyrics.org)

Answer: 4

'in the lane snow is glistening'.
'In the meadow we can build a snowman'
Both these lines are repeated twice therefore the word 'snow' is mentioned just four times in the song.

*Useless information* The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (commonly known as ASCAP) is a Performance Rights Organisation in America which, basically, collects and redistributes royalties for its members. ASCAP stated, in 2007, that 'Winter Wonderland' is the most played holiday song, as written by its members, with The Eurythmics' being the most commonly played version.
10. 'Oh I won't ask for much this Christmas I won't even wish for snow (and I) I'm just gonna keep on waiting Underneath the mistletoe' Lyrics from a hit by Mariah Carey; which song are these from?

Answer: All I Want For Christmas is You

Another Christmas standard which has been around forever, or so it seems. Actually it was written by Mariah Carey and Walter Afanasieff in 1993, although many people mistakenly recall hearing it in the 1970s or even earlier.

*Useless information* Mariah Carey was the first artist to have her first five single releases top the US Billboard 100 charts.
