The Kinks were formed in 1964 in North London by brothers Ray and Dave Davies and were one of the "British Invasion" bands. The band was together for 32 years. They had five Top ten singles on the US Billboard chart and have had four of their albums certified gold. They received the Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Service to British Music". The Kinks were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. They gave their last public performance in 1996.

Bill Withers was born William Harrison Withers Jnr in 1938 and is a singer/songwriter and musician. He performed and recorded from 1970 until 1985. The song was awarded a Gold Disc in 1971 and he won a Grammy Award in 1972 with "Ain't No Sunshine" as the best R&B Song. He has received nine Grammy Award nominations and won his third Grammy for Best R&B song in 1988 as songwriter for "Lean on Me".
