Arnold George Dorsey was born in 1936 in Madras, India. He moved to Leicester, England just after WWII. He had no success in the UK for years as Gerry Dorsey until he changed his name. His first UK chart hit under that name "Release Me (And Let Me Love Again)" was number one for six weeks and spent 56 weeks on the chart. It reached number four on the US pop chart the same year. It was the record that kept The Beatles double A-side "Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever" off the top spot in the UK. It stopped their run of consecutive UK number one hits at 11 which would have reached 17 otherwise.
