Long ago, when I was a teenager, my friends and I used to quiz each other on Beatles lyrics. We got down to guessing songs with just three word clues. I wonder...can you do it too?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although we're going for just three words, we'll ease into it, and start off with five: Can you guess the Beatles song which has-- "where the rain gets in"

Answer: Fixing a Hole

"And stops my mind from wandering..."
But IS this song about drugs? Some have suggested it is about heroin, others about marijuana -- or maybe it's just about roof repairs? It was written and sung by Paul.
2. OK, we're down to four words -- guess the Beatles song: "Stirring up the dirt"

Answer: Piggies

One of George's compositions found on the "White Album"; a social satire with a somewhat bitter tone. In it, George reflects on greed and class divisions.
3. Now it's three words...can you do it? Start with a Beatles song that had a lot of airplay... "Barber showing photographs"

Answer: Penny Lane

One of my favourites! Based on memories of an actual street in Liverpool. Paul -- who wrote the song -- said the Penny Lane bus depot was where he had to change buses when on his way to John's house.
4. Another well-known Beatles hit: "Mother Mary comes"

Answer: Let it Be

Paul wrote this, he has said, about his actual mother, not about the Virgin Mary as many have thought. "Julia" was John's tribute to his own mother.
5. Simple words, deep meaning -- which Beatles' song has these lyrics: "You see nothing"

Answer: For No One

"And in her eyes you see nothing...no sign of love behind the tears cried For No One." From "Revolver", this is Paul's poignant reflection on love that somehow just faded away. This has always struck me as one of the saddest Beatles lyrics.
It features a clavichord, quite an unusual instrument!
6. Can you guess this song by the Fab Four: "Help me understand"

Answer: If I Fell

I remember this from the film "A Hard Day's Night" -- a very funny self parody of the Beatles' early fame directed by great Richard Lester. If John hadn't been a successful musician and songwriter he would have made a very good actor...and the other lads aren't half bad!
7. What song are these three words from? "Hard earned pay"

Answer: Two of Us

Not a hit, but a very cute pop type song that deserved to be one! On the "Let it Be" album. Paul has said that the song is about his love of wandering about aimlessly in the countryside with his wife Linda.
8. In what Beatles song can you find the lyric: "Heart went boom"?

Answer: I Saw her Standing There

An early rocking number! I think it sounds somewhat like Chuck Berry. It was written in late 1962, and released on the Beatles' first album in early 1963.
9. Which Beatles song is this? "People and things"

Answer: In My Life

My favourite -- this was sung at my wedding (alas, not by the Beatles!) Rolling Stone magazine rated this number 23 on the 500 greatest songs of all time. I guess I have good taste!
10. OK now just two words! Can you do it? Yes you can! What song is this? "Mister Heath" ["Mr Heath"]

Answer: Taxman

Mr Heath and Mr Wilson, both mentioned in the song, were British Prime Ministers in the 1960s at a time when taxes were high on those with high incomes (like the Fab Four). This was one of George's compositions and can be found on the "Revolver" album.
