A Flaming Pie of Lyrics Trivia Quiz

These lyrics are from mostly obscure songs, the ones that don't get played on the radio. Personally, these are better than some of the more popular songs!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First one: "There's a fog upon L.A..."

Answer: Blue Jay Way

An odd little song, with an excellently harmonized opening. It closes with an ending resembling "Hey Jude," with the chorus repeated until the end of the song.
2. "Meeting a man from the motor trade..."

Answer: She's Leaving Home

This is a song almost reminiscent of "Yesterday," with its string backings and Paul's vocals. One of Paul's numerous contributions to "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," including, "When I'm Sixty-Four," the title tracks, and "Fixing A Hole."
3. "I need a fix 'cause I'm going down..."

Answer: Happiness is a Warm Gun

This is featured on the White Album, along with a few other songs on this quiz. If you chose SFF, this is a quiz about OBSCURE songs! Although, by now, it doesn't matter, does it?
4. "It doesn't really matter what chords I play..."

Answer: Only a Northern Song

This was written by George in one hour when they needed one more song for the "Yellow Submarine" soundtrack. He wrote it out of anger for their label, Northern Songs.
5. "Having been some days in preparation, a splendid time is guaranteed for all..."

Answer: Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite!

One of the most under appreciated Lennon songs, in my opinion. Everyone has heard about how other Lennon songs were written, with "A Day in the Life" coming straight out of a copy of the Daily Mail, but no one talks about how "Mr. Kite!" was written. During a break in filming for the "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever" promotional films, the Beatles stopped at an antique store, and John bought an old circus poster, talking about, well, a circus show, featuring Mr. Kite and Mr.

Henderson.
6. "Standing on the cast iron shore, yeah..."

Answer: Glass Onion

A song written by Lennon about people trying to figure out what his songs/lyrics meant. Paul is Dead fanatics claim it's an index to the 4 of the biggest lyrical clues at the time of that writing (SFF-"I buried Paul", Walrus-"King Lear" talking-"Bury my body", Fool-"Head in the clouds", Lady Madonna- "Wednesday morning papers didn't come").

The other song referred to is "Fixing a Hole," from "Sgt. Pepper."
7. "They are standing still..."

Answer: Revolution 9

Lennon's masterpiece of avant-garde music. 8 minutes and 13 seconds of unorchestrated madness. Give it to a seasoned Beatles fanatic, and they will react as if it were a symphony; give it to a non-Beatles fan, and it will scare the pants off them. Try it, it's quite fun!
8. "Sont des mots qui vont tres bien ensemble..."

Answer: Michelle

Four songs featuring foreign languages. If you recognized the lyric as French, you probably did well on this question. You also probably got this one right if you knew the song. This song's presence on the quiz IS questioned, because it won a Grammy for Best Song.

Many people have heard this song played on the radio, but it is left behind in the wake of songs like, "Hey Jude", "Let It Be", etc.
9. "Yes, you can imitate everyone you know!"

Answer: Dig A Pony

A song on the "Let It Be" album, it opens with a count-in, but is stopped by Paul, yelling "Hold it!" right as the guitar starts, then gets ready and starts the song again.
10. "If I knew what I was missing!"

Answer: You Won't See Me

Off of the "Rubber Soul" album, this song VERY gradually slows down, about 1 bpm (beat per minute) every 30 seconds.
11. "...like a homing bird I'll fly..."

Answer: Free As A Bird

One of the two songs recorded by all four Beatles after John's death, dubbing Paul, George, and Ringo onto a demo tape. The video for this song, featured on the "Anthology" VHS and DVD sets, features numerous references to Beatles songs.
12. "...it blows my mind..."

Answer: Because

An interesting song, the harmonies are excellent, all nine of them! Paul, John, and George each recorded three different harmonies for this song. The guitar chords are also interesting: John based them on Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" - backwards. Yoko Ono was playing the sonata for John, and he asked if she could play it backwards for him. He liked the sound, and used it on "Because".
13. "...in a big brown bag..."

Answer: Baby You're A Rich Man

On the "Anthology" VHS/DVD, Episode 6, this song is played while George, Paul, and Ringo recall their brief flirt with buying an entire Greek island. One of the smaller ones, of course. Sadly, they decided against the idea. I think it would be a nice talking point, owning an island!
14. "...in the middle of investigations..."

Answer: You Never Give Me Your Money

All of these songs come from, in my opinion (and many, MANY others), the greatest side of an album in history- the B-side of "Abbey Road". It was a psuedo-symphony, with songs running with each other. The band sounded more together than they had in years.
15. "...the road that stretches out ahead..."

Answer: Two Of Us

All 4 of these songs are on the ill-fated "Let It Be" album, the last Beatles album released. While it was agreed that the sessions for recording were terrible, the songs were not. Songs such as "Let It Be", "The Long And Winding Road", and "Two Of Us" showed that at their lowest point, they were still greater than almost everything else out there.

I hope you had fun taking the quiz. For the newer Beatle fans, many of these are good songs that you should check out on cd. Or just get an old record player and a few albums. Oh, and for the record, I'm 15. Not the age you expected this quiz to be from? When you thought the generation was lost to rap music and the like, here I come...
