Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "He likes to keep his fire engine clean / It's a clean machine". Which Beatles song are those lyrics from?

Answer: Penny Lane

"And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen" they also sang in "Penny Lane". It was released as a single in February, 1967 and was included on the U.S. version of the "Magical Mystery Tour" album later that year. The video made for the song might best be remembered for the bystanders in the background perhaps thinking "Blimey, there goes John Lennon!"
2. One Beatles song reminds us that "Living is easy with eyes closed / Misunderstanding all you see"; which one?

Answer: Strawberry Fields Forever

Though Strawberry Field was a real place, a Salvation Army children's home in Liverpool, John Lennon wrote in the song that "nothing is real". Released in February, 1967 as a double-A-sided record (along with "Penny Lane") it was the first Beatles single in four years to fail to reach number one in the UK, though over the years it has come to be one of those Beatles songs that people say "is stuck in my head!"
3. In which Beatles song will you find the lyrics "I never give you my pillow / I only send you my invitations"?

Answer: Carry that Weight

"Carry that Weight" was part of a medley including "Golden Slumbers" and "The End" that closed the "Abbey Road" album. Written by Paul McCartney, both he and John Lennon said it alluded to problems the band was having, collectively and individually, at the time.
4. A song the Beatles didn't write contained the lyrics "I'm an ol' poor boy, and I'm a long way from home / I'll never be happy cause everything I ever did was wrong". Which song was it?

Answer: Matchbox

Country music singer Carl Perkins wrote and recorded the song in 1956, wondering if a matchbox would hold all his clothes. The Beatles were fans of his and started singing the song in 1961, recording it in 1964 and changing it a bit to a matchbox making a hole in their clothes.
5. "Over men and horses, hoops and garters / Lastly through a hogshead of real fire!" would make quite a spectacle. Which celebrated Beatles song are these lyrics from?

Answer: Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite

"The celebrated Mr. K. performs his feat on Saturday at Bishops Gate" so don't miss it! John Lennon wrote the song after seeing an old circus poster. It was included on the "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album.
6. These Beatles lyrics "See the people standing there / Who disagree and never win" might seem to be about some of the 'sidewalk superintendents' in the picture but they're really about something else. But which song is it?

Answer: Fixing a Hole

Another song from 1967's "Sgt. Pepper" album, Paul McCartney said he wrote it about fans who wouldn't leave him alone.
7. A possibly misinterpreted Beatles song has the lyrics "She ought to think twice / She ought to do right by me". Which of these is it?

Answer: Ticket to Ride

There was a bit of friction between the lads regarding this song. John Lennon said he wrote it about Hamburg, Germany prostitutes getting a clean bill of health regarding their occupation. Paul McCartney said he had a large part in writing it and it was about a railway ticket to Ryde, on the Isle of Wight. Regardless, it was in the movie and album "Help!" and was a number one single in most of the free world in 1965.
8. These lyrics might seem appropriate to the picture: "Here come old flattop, he come grooving up slowly / He got joo-joo eyeball, he one holy roller". Which Beatles song are they from?

Answer: Come Together

"Come Together" was the opening song on the "Abbey Road" album in 1969 and was part of a double A-sided single along with "Something". It was written by John Lennon after LSD guru Timothy Leary had asked him to write a campaign song for Leary's campaign for governor of California.
9. From the UK version of the Beatles' "Rubber Soul" album came the lyrics "Doesn't have a point of view / Knows not where he's going to". What is the name of the song?

Answer: Nowhere Man

The song was later released as a single in the U.S. and Australia (but not in the UK). John Lennon wrote it and said it was about himself after spending several hours trying to come up with another song for the "Rubber Soul" album.
10. "The children asked him if to kill was not a sin / 'Not when he looked so fierce', his mummy butted in". What is the title of this song by the Beatles?

Answer: The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill

The song was inspired by an event that happened while the Beatles were visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. It involved an American who went tiger hunting while at the ashram. The song was on "The Beatles", often known as "The White Album".
