Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The following three word phrase is one of the most over-used and under-used phrases in the English language. Which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the lyric: "I love you"?

Answer: I'm Happy Just To Dance With You

This one is a little tricky, but so is believing someone who says, "I love you" too soon. "Altogether Now" uses it at the end of each verse, as in: "Five six seven eight nine ten, I love you". "Eight Days A Week" uses the phrase in a memorable drawn out fashion: "Eight days a week, I love you" (sounds like "I luh-uh-uh-uh-ove you").

Not sure what to call the section where "I Should Have Known Better" uses the phrase, but the surrounding lyrics are: "That when I tell you that I love you, oh, you're gonna say you love me too". "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" is where the sneakiness comes in, as it comes close but uses the future tense instead of the present tense: "Before this dance is through, I think I'll love you too, I'm so happy when you dance with me".
2. Since that last one was tricky, let's try that question again. Which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the lyric: "I love you"?

Answer: I Want To Tell You

What rhymes better with "Love Me Do" than "I love you"? Nothing...and the Beatles couldn't pass that up. "For You Blue", that lazy, feel-good blues song on "Let It Be", qualifies with the lyrics: "I want you in the morning girl, I love you. I want you at the moment, I feel blue".

The romantic opening lyrics of "I Will" satisfy the question with: "Who knows how long I've loved you, you know I love you still". But the overly cautious person singing "I Want To Tell You" doesn't mention the L-word even once.
3. If someone was more desperate, they might use a phrase that leaves less room for interpretation. Which Beatles song does NOT contain the phrase: "I need you"?

Answer: Misery

"I Need You" definitely contains the phrase. "Got To Get You Into My Life" gets the phrase into the lyrics with: "Oooh, did I tell you I need you, every single day of my life". The flip side of "She Loves You", that full-of-confidence song "I'll Get You" actually admits the phrase in: "I think about you night and day, I need you and it's true". But the person singing "Misery" is too wrapped up in his misery to even tell his love that he needs her.
4. And then there is the straightforward approach. Which Beatles song does NOT contain the lyrics: "I want you"?

Answer: I Want To Hold Your Hand

The person singing "Michelle" leaves no room for doubt in the lyrics, "I want you, I want you, I want you". "For You Blue" gets the lyrics in with the phrase, "I want you in the morning girl, I love you, I want you at the moment, I feel blue". And, of course, "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" is peppered with the phrase all over the place. But "I Want To Hold Your Hand" only contains the first two words of the phrase.
5. Let's go back to the first question for a minute. If someone says, "I love you", and you inquisitively ask, "Why?", they might say, "I don't know why, I just do". What Beatles song does NOT contain the phrase: "I don't know why"?

Answer: The Fool On The Hill

The persona singing "Girl" admits his enamored ignorance in: "And she promises the earth to me, and I believe her. After all this time I don't know why". "Hello, Goodbye" admits confusion with: "I don't know why you say goodbye, I say hello". If you want to take the egotistic high road, you might think like the persona singing "Ticket To Ride": "I don't know why she's riding so high.

She ought to think right, she ought to do right by me". "The Fool On The Hill" realizes the trap question, "...And he never gives an answer".
6. But you are smarter than the person answering question 5, and realize you need time to think up a better answer than "I don't know why". You stall with the word, "Because". Which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the word "because"?

Answer: A Hard Day's Night

"A Hard Day's Night" comes close with the lyrics, "So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone, you know I feel okay", but you'll notice the absence of the "be" before the "'cause". The song "Because" is straightforward and defintely contains the word.

The opening line in "For You Blue" contains the word in, "Because you're sweet and lovely girl, I love you". "She Loves You" gets "because" into the lyrics later in the song with "Because she loves you and you know that can't be bad".
7. You may seem a little needy, but using the phrase "I couldn't live without you" will surely get your love's attention. Which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the phrase: "without you"?

Answer: Got To Get You Into My Life

Of course "Within You Without You" contains the phrase. The person singing "Lovely Rita" uses the phrase in the lyrics, "Lovely Rita meter maid, where would I be without you". And "I Need You" comes the closet to the sentiment in the questions with "Please remember how I feel about you, I could never really live without you". But the person singing "Got To Get You Into My Life" never even uses the words, "within" or "without", although it does "with".
8. Of course, before you can say, "I love you", you need someone to love. In which of the following Beatles songs do you NOT hear them sing the phrase: "someone to love"?

Answer: All You Need Is Love

Most of you are going to recognize that "With A Little Help From My Friends" contains the phrase "somebody to love", but in the last "Do you need anybody?" section, Ringo sings "I just need someone to love", in contrast to the album liner lyrics "I just need somebody to love". "Love Me Do" contains the phrase twice in, "Someone to love, Somebody new, Someone to love, Someone like you". And the under rated Harrison classic, "If I Needed Someone", opens with, "If I needed someone to love, you're the one that I'd be thinking of".

But despite the praise of loving in "All You Need Is Love", the Beatles never once say anything about loving another person, only about the virtues of loving.
9. The Beatles didn't want their final song on their final recorded album to include the phrase "the end", so they added "Her Majesty". Which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the phrase: "in the end"?

Answer: Run For Your Life

"The End" definitely contains the phrase. But "Run For Your Life" only comes close with "If I catch you with another man, it's the end-a, little girl". "I'll Follow The Sun" has the phrase in the lyrics, "And though I lose a friend, in the end you will know, oh". And "I'll Get You" uses it as an extension of the title, "I'll get you in the end".
10. I know you've all been missing the "I love you" phrase from the first two questions, so let's try it once more. Do you know which of the following Beatles songs does NOT contain the lyric: "I love you"?

Answer: You Like Me Too Much

"Michelle" repeats the phrase several times in "I love you, I love you, I love you". "I'll Be Back" uses the phrase in "I love you so, oh, I'm the one who wants you". And "If I Fell" had to slip in the phrase somewhere with "if I love you too, oh please, don't hurt my pride like her".

But the wrong answer "You Like Me Too Much" only comes close, using "like" instead of "love": "'Cause you like me too much and I like you".
