Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A bit of yoghurt, some cucumber and mint goes to make this dressing, but who was singing when Chef put "Paperback Raita" on the menu?

Answer: The Beatles

"Paperback Writer" was released on the A-side of a single in 1966. It reached the number one spot in several countries including the US and the UK. It is in the form of plea from an aspiring writer to a publisher. Paul McCartney supposedly wrote it because an aunt wanted to know if he could write a song about something other than love. "Rain" is on the B-side of the 1966 single.
2. The tandoor is a style of clay oven used for cooking. But who was Chef listening to when he wrote "Tandoor Deliver"?

Answer: Adam and the Ants

Strictly speaking, it would probably be more correct to use the word "Tandoori" as in "Tandoori Chicken". Adam and the Ants, a British band, were active from the late 1970s for about five years. "Stand and Deliver" was their most successful single and was released in 1981. Burundi drums often featured in their music.
3. So we have some pumpkin, lentils, vegetables, spices and some meat. Chef has made a dhansak curry and called it "Dhansak on the Ceiling". Who was he thinking of?

Answer: Lionel Richie

"Dancing on the Ceiling" was the title track of his third album, which was released in 1986. An expensive video, featuring Lionel Richie dancing on the ceiling, helped to make it the second best-selling single from the album. It was topped by "Say You, Say Me".
4. Spices and yoghurt or coconut are key ingredients in Chef's classic "Nessun Korma". Who might you expect to sing this?

Answer: Luciano Pavarotti

"Nessun Dorma" translates as "none shall sleep". Chef would probably say "naan shall sleep". Naan is a type of leavened flat bread served with curry dishes. Korma is a curry dish with a creamy sauce usually made with yoghurt or coconut milk and nuts. "Nessun Dorma" is a famous aria from the opera "Turandot" by Puccini. Pavarotti's 1972 rendition was used during the 1990 FIFA World Cup and received a significant boost to its popularity as a result, reaching number two in the UK singles chart.
5. With some potatoes and cauliflower, Chef has come up with a delicious curry which he has called "Say Aloo, Wave Gobi". Now who supplied the music?

Answer: Soft Cell

In India "aloo" and "gobi" mean potato and cauliflower, respectively. Aloo gobi is a fairly dry spiced dish found in India, Nepal and Pakistan. Soft Cell were an early 1980s group which achieved success with such songs as "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and "Tainted Love". They broke up in 1984 but reformed in 2001. The band members are Marc Almond and David Ball.
6. Chef has decided to list some starters on the menu, but who inspired "Pappadum Preach"?

Answer: Madonna

A pappadum (poppadom, etc) is a kind of thin crispy flatbread which is often made from urad dal or blackgram. "Papa Don't Preach" was released in 1986. The song was the second single released from the album "True Blue" and topped the charts in the US and UK amongst others.
7. Another of Chef's creations is "Living Dahl". It sounds like he has been fermenting his pulses to come up with this title. Or has he? Who else could have influenced the title?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Dahl is a form of vegetable stew made from pulses such as lentils, peas or beans. Cliff Richard first had a hit with "Living Doll" in 1959 with the Drifters (later called the Shadows). He then teamed up with the Young Ones of the TV comedy series for the benefit of the Comic Relief charity.

The 1986 version was another hit leading to the song topping the UK charts for the second time. Shadows guitarist Hank Marvin was involved in both versions.
8. This creation is usually an appetiser dish such as mushrooms crispy fried in a dough. So what was Chef thinking about when he came up with "Bhaji Trousers"?

Answer: Madness

Madness is a British ska band with Graham "Suggs" McPherson as lead singer. "Baggy Trousers" is part of the "Absolutely" album, released by Madness in 1980. It was one of their most successful singles reaching number three in the UK charts.
9. The next item on the menu is Chicken Tikka. It looks like Chef had his iPod turned off for this one. Or did he? What do you think?

Answer: ABBA

"Tikka" means bits or pieces and these are normally marinated in yoghurt and spices. "Chiquitita" by ABBA was the most successful single from the "Voulez-Vous" album, which was released in 1979. In support of the 1979 International Year of the Child, 50% of the proceeds of the song went (and continue to go) to UNICEF.

This is said to amount to several million dollars now. "Chiquitita" is an affectionate term for "little girl" in Spanish.
10. Lastly we have "Things Can Only Get Bhuna". Hmm, maybe Chef is thinking aloud here ... but his cooking is not that bad. So who might he have been listening to when he put this on the menu?

Answer: D:Ream

Bhuna is a type of curry dish with the spices cooked in oil. "Things Can Only Get Better" by D:Ream was initially released in 1993 without much chart success. A remix in 1994 topped the charts in the UK. It was adopted by the Labour Party in the UK for their 1997 General Election campaign with Tony Blair being successfully elected as Prime Minister.
