Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Maxwell's first chore of the day is to check the aviary. As he does, his iPod shuffles to one of his favorite songs - "Owl Along the Watchtower". Thinking how appropriate the song is at the moment, he tries to remember who wrote and recorded it. Which singer was that?

Answer: Bob Dylan

"All Along the Watchtower" was both written and recorded by Bob Dylan. First released on the album titled "John Wesley Harding" in December of 1967, the song was released as a single in November of 1968. While it did not chart, it became one of his concert standards, more so than any other of his recordings.
Also in 1968, the song was recorded and released by the Jimi Hendrix Experience - with that version making it to number 20 on the Billboard chart.
Bob Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and has won numerous awards, including - as of 2012 - 11 Grammys, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe." "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Lay Lady Lay" are just a couple of his well-known songs.
2. Maxwell heads over to the pen where the wildebeests are waiting to be fed, and as he does, a hit song from 1985 comes on, putting a bounce in his step. "I love Huey Lewis and the Gnus," Maxwell says, then starts to sing along to which song?

Answer: The Power of Love

"The Power of Love" was actually written for the film "Back to the Future", and became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Huey Lewis and the News is an American (California) rock band which - as of 2012 - has had 19 top ten singles in the US charts. 1984's "I Want a New Drug" and 1994's "But It's Alright" are just two of their more popular songs.
3. The cats are lazing in the sun as the song "Lion Eyes" comes on, and Maxwell pauses, wondering. Which band made that song a hit in 1975?

Answer: The Eagles

"Lyin' Eyes" was recorded as part of 1975's "One of These Nights" album, and the single ranked in the top ten on both the Billboard Hot 100 and US Country charts. Written by two members of the band - Don Henley and Glenn Frey - the song was later used in the 1980 movie "Urban Cowboy".
Formed in 1971, the Eagles stayed together until 1980, at which point the members took up solo careers. In 1994, however, they reunited, and have recorded and toured with ongoing success.
Their 1976 album "Hotel California" is to date (2012) their best-selling album, and is considered by many to be one of the best albums ever recorded.
4. Maxwell is spraying down the concrete in the tigers' enclosure when his iPod shuffles to a new song, and he has to laugh. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feline" starts to play. The Righteous Brothers made that song a hit in which decade?

Answer: 1960s

Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield are the duo behind such hits as 1964's "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'", 1965's "Just Once in My Life" and 1974's "Rock and Roll Heaven".
The Righteous Brothers were not brothers in fact, but took that name from a comment made in 1962 by an audience member when they were performing as part of a group called the Paramours. Deciding to strike off on their own as a duo, they performed and recorded until Hatfield's death in 2003. Bill Medley continues to perform as of 2012.
And, Cher was a backup singer on "You've Lost that Lovin' Feelin'".
5. Maxwell yawns as he heads for the zoo's bovid section, and his iPod changes songs. "Sheep Trick!" Maxwell exclaims. "I love that song they did in 1979! But, what is the title?"

Answer: Dream Police

Cheap Trick is an American rock band that formed in 1973, and while the band members have changed over the years, as of 2012 the band is still performing and recording. They have recorded numerous albums, garnered praise from both the public and fellow musicians, and have contributed to the soundtracks of several movies, including 1986's "Top Gun", 1992's "Gladiator" and 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". Released in 1979, "Dream Police" is the title track of that album, and the single reached number 26 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.

They re-worked the song as "Green Police" in 2010 for an Audi Superbowl commercial.
6. As he walks between the enclosures for the sheep and goats, Maxwell's iPod shuffles to "Ewe Light Up My Life", and he shakes his head. He should know, but what singer took that song to the top of the charts in 1977?

Debby Boone's biggest hit was 1977's "You Light Up My Life", but she also found success with 1979's "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own" and 1981's "Perfect Fool" among others. She won a Country Music Award for 'Top New Female Vocalist' in 1977, and has also won several Grammys and other awards.

She has acted on stage and television, and has co-authored several children's books with her husband, Gabriel Ferrer. "You Light Up My Life" was written by Joe Brooks, and featured in a 1977 film of the same name.

The song in the film, however, was recorded not by Boone, but by Kasey Cisyk, and then lip-synched by the star, Didi Conn.

Answer: West Side Story

"West Side Story" debuted on Broadway in 1957, with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and music by Leonard Bernstein. The 1961 film, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer, kept both the lyrics and music, and won ten Academy Awards - including the Best Picture award.
Besides "One Hand, One Heart", some of the musical's most memorable songs include "Maria", "America" and "Somewhere".
8. Maxwell is toting alfalfa over to the alpaca pasture when "Llama Told Me (Not to Come)" starts to play on his iPod, and he nearly drops his armful of feed. Getting a better grip, he asks himself, "Who sang that one?"

Answer: Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night's first gold record was 1969's "One", which was written by Harry Nilsson. 1970's "Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" (written by Randy Newman) was one of three songs they recorded that reached number one in the US - the other two being 1971's "Joy to the World" and 1972's "Black & White".
The band began in 1968, broke up in 1976, then got back together in 1981, and as of 2012, is still recording and performing.
In 2000, Three Dog Night was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
9. "My Aye-ayes Adored You" comes on as Maxwell changes the water in the lemur cage. "Oh," he says, "who sang that in 1974?"

Answer: Frankie Valli

Frankie Valli had nine top 40 hits by himself, another 29 with The Four Seasons, and one with The Four Seasons' recording under the name of The Wonder Who?. Born in 1934, he began his music career in 1953, and became the frontman of The Four Seasons in 1960. A few of his hits with The Four Seasons were 1962's "Sherry", 1964's "Rag Doll" and 1975's "December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)".
"My Eyes Adored You" was originally recorded by The Four Seasons, but rejected, and then sold to Frankie Valli. Released by him in November of 1974, the song hit number one on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1975.
10. Maxwell is almost done for the day when "We are the Chimpions" starts to play, and a monarch flutters by. He watches the butterfly as he tries to remember - which group brought that song to number four in the US?

Answer: Queen

A British rock band, Queen came into being in 1971, and featured Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor. In 1975 "A Night at the Opera" - titled after a Marx Brothers film - won international success and acclaim for the band. "We Are the Champions" was recorded on the 1977 album "News of the World", as was "We Will Rock You".
Queen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2004, "Bohemian Rhapsody" was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame.
