Lee Andrews and the Hearts formed in 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The quintet recorded for several labels before having a US Top Twenty hit in 1957 with "Tear Drops". "Long Lonely Nights" made it to Number 45 the same year. The following year their last charted hit, "Try the Impossible", made it to Number 33.
Bobby Vinton first topped the charts in 1962 with "Roses Are Red (My Love)" and had already had charted four Number One hits when his version of "Long Lonely Nights" made the US Top Twenty in 1965.
The Del-Vikings had a 1957 hit with "Come Go With Me". "Fascination" was released by Jane Morgan and the Troubadours in 1957 and Billy Ward and His Dominoes charted a rendition of "Star Dust" the same year.

The band formed in 1976 in New York and released their eponymous debut album the following year. Over the next two decades the band released 39 singles with 14 making the Top Twenty in the US. "The Long and Winding Road" was the band's 20th and final US Number One single as a group. The Lennon/McCartney song is the tenth track from the group's "Let It Be" album. Paul McCartney was very unhappy with producer Phil Spector's final production of the song.
"The Long and Winding Road" was recorded in late January of 1969 with John Lennon on bass, shortly after the group's famous rooftop concert on the Apple headquarters building. The working title of the album was "Get Back".
When Paul performed "The Long and Winding Road" during the 1976 Wings Over the World Tour he played piano using a horn section but no strings.
