Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hi all! From which song come the lyrics 'I send you flowers but you don't care, you never seem to see me standing there'?

Answer: Hello Little Girl

'Hello Little Girl' was the first UK hit for The Fourmost, taking them to #9 in 1963. They were another of the beat boom groups, kind of like The Swinging Blue Jeans I always thought. The Fourmost's biggest UK hit was 'A Little Loving' which went 'a long long long long way' in going to #6 in 1964.
2. For this question you have to complete the lyric from the options I give you. Here goes - 'This girl was in my arms and swore to me ...'?

Answer: she'd be mine eternally

Hopefully not too difficult - '(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame' took Elvis Presley to #4 on Billboard in 1961. In the UK it was coupled with 'Little Sister' and went all the way to #1. 'Little Sister' peaked at #5 in America.
3. I want you to name the singer of the following lyrics: 'Please tell me something, have you met an angel, someone too lovely to live on Earth'. Was it?

Answer: Chris Andrews

'Yesterday Man' was Chris Andrews' only UK top ten entry in reaching #3 in 1965.
4. Another complete the lyrics question: 'You love me like a hurricane, then you start to ...'?

Answer: freeze

Maybe a bit of a giveaway there, the lyrics came from a 1960 UK chart-topper for Cliff Richard and the Shadows, 'Please Don't Tease'.
5. Which song includes the lyrics 'I know something about love, you gotta want it bad'?

Answer: Tell Him

A tough one there. In 1963, 'Tell Him' was a Billboard #4 for The Exciters, but their version stalled at #46 in Britain. It was outpaced in the charts there by a version from Billie Davis that went to #10.
6. I take you back to the British charts of 1961 and find the lyrics 'Goodbye, farewell, I'm not sure what to do, so long, au revoir, it's hard but I'll pull through'.What was the title of the song, the UK Eurovision entry from that year?

Answer: Are You Sure

'Are You Sure', as sung by The Allisons, was the UK's 1961 Eurovision entry and finished second. It also secured #2 on the UK chart, although some sources quote it as a chart-topper.
7. It was a big UK hit for Billy Fury and featured the opening 'I want to be your lover, but your friend is all I'll stay', but who had the US hit with the song?

Answer: Tony Orlando

Tony Orlando took 'Halfway to Paradise' to #39 on Billboard in his pre-Dawn days. He also hit the UK Top Ten with 'Bless You' in 1961. Fury's version of 'Halfway to Paradise' reached #3 in Britain.
8. What was the name of the lady described thus 'You'll know her if you see her, blue eyes and a ponytail'.

Answer: Sheila

Tommy Roe had a massive hit in 1962 with 'Sheila'. It topped the Billboard charts and got to #3 in the UK. I notice he later reached #4 in the UK with a song called 'The Folk Singer', which failed to make the US Top 40.
9. The lyrics may be short, but I think they're distinctive. Which song included the line 'Two girls for every boy'?

Answer: Surf City

All were hits for Jan and Dean, but it can only be 'Surf City'. This surfing classic topped the American charts in 1963 but only made #26 in Britain. 'Heart And Soul', the duo's only other British hit, fared slightly better in reaching #24 in 1961.
10. A big hit on both sides of the Atlantic featured the lyrics 'I don't want you, I don't need you, I don't love you anymore'. Who had the respective hits?

Answer: Gene McDaniels and Frankie Vaughan

The song was 'Tower of Strength' from 1961; McDaniels took it to #5 in the US, and also to #49 on the UK chart. Frankie Vaughan's British version topped the UK chart.

I wonder how many of you out there have done all the quizzes in the series so far. Let me know how you're getting on. I've a few more quizzes in the pipeline, some that will include lyrics from the 1950s too. There's something to look forward to...
