Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the Level 42 song "Running In The Family", what is the name of the singer's brother?

Answer: Joe

"One night, my brother Joe and me climbed down the family tree that grew outside our bedroom window. We remember, we knew it couldn't last, running from the past, things that we were born to be." This song is the third track on the CD version of the album, which is also called "Running In The Family".
2. With whom did Luther Vandross sing a duet on the hit song "There's Nothing Better Than Love"?

Answer: Gregory Hines

Although better known as a dancer and actor, the versatile Gregory Hines showed his vocal talents on this popular song, which was a surprise hit. The song comes from the album "Give Me The Reason", which included another hit song, "Stop to Love", and the title track, which is also on the soundtrack of the movie "Ruthless People". (Thanks to the Internet Movie Database and amazon.com for additional information.)
3. In the hit Maxine Nightingale song "Lead Me On", what line follows the starting line of the chorus, "Come on and lead me on..."?

Answer: "Tease me all night long..."

A native of Wembley, England, Maxine Nightingale made the Top Ten on the Billboard charts with both "Right Back Where We Started From" (1976) and "Lead Me On" (1979). She's still active, singing pop and jazz on tour and in the studio. (Thanks to the Maxine Nightingale website, www.maxinenightingale.biz, for additional information.)
4. Which of the following songs was NOT released on the Hall and Oates album "Big Bam Boom"?

Answer: "One on One"

Two boys from Philadelphia made good during the 1970s and 1980s as one of the best-selling musical duos of all time. Along with "Big Bam Boom", they also had hits from albums like "H2O" (on which "One on One" was released) and "Private Eyes". (Thanks to amazon.com for additional information.)
5. Who sang the theme song to NBC's 80's sitcom "Gimme A Break!"?

Answer: Nell Carter

All four women here can claim to be singer/actresses. Carter won a Tony for her work on Broadway ("Ain't Misbehavin'") and starred for six seasons on "Gimme A Break!". Hopkins, who also starred on "Break" and has been on many other series, was a backup singer for Tony Orlando and Dawn. DuBois played Willona Woods on the 70's-vintage sitcom "Good Times" and sang the theme song to another classic sitcom, "The Jeffersons". And LaBelle, in addition to her numerous R & B hits, played Dwayne Wayne's (Kadeem Hardison's) mother on the NBC sitcom "A Different World". (Thanks to the Internet Movie Database for additional information.)
6. Which rock band took their cover of Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" into the Top Ten on the charts in 1988?

Answer: Cheap Trick

Originally released in 1958 as a single with another popular Elvis song, "Hound Dog", "Don't Be Cruel" was written by Otis Blackwell, the man who wrote a number of Elvis's hits. Cheap Trick released this on their album "Lap of Luxury", on the Epic label. (Thanks to songfacts.com and amazon.com for additional information.)
7. Which of the following female singers did NOT sing on the now-legendary song "We Are The World"?

Answer: Janet Jackson

A group effort that was completed after the American Music Awards on January 28, 1985, "We Are The World" featured singers across virtually every popular music type. Even actor Dan Ackroyd was in on the festivities. The Jackson clan was represented by Jackie, LaToya, Marlon, Michael, Randy and Tito. (Thanks to inthe80s.com for additional information.)
8. You'll have to fill in the blank on this question. Swing Out Sister had two big hits in the United States off their album "It's Better to..."

Answer: Travel

The songs "Breakout" and "Twilight World" propelled the English trio of Andy Connell, Corinne Drewery and Martin Jackson into the US spotlight in 1987. Jackson left the group by 1992, but Connell and Drewery have continued to work together. In October 2004, they released the new album "Where Our Love Grows" on the EMI label. (Thanks to VH1.com and swingoutsister.com for additional information.)
9. Well-known R & B singer Al Green sang the theme song to the hit TV series "Maude".

Answer: False

The bouncy, upbeat theme, which put the liberal Maude Findlay (Beatrice Arthur) on the same plane as Lady Godiva and Betsy Ross, was sung by another R & B artist, the late Donny Hathaway. Hathaway was best known for his work with college classmate Roberta Flack.
10. The Spinners got people moving and grooving with the song "Rubberband Man" in the 1970s. In the opening line of that song, the singer calls for his companion to hand him down what two objects?

Answer: Walking cane and hat

"Hand me down my walking cane, hand me down my hat. Hurry now, and don't be late, 'cause we ain't got time to chat."

This toe-tapping song, which clocks in at over seven minutes in its original album format, has made a bit of a comeback almost a quarter century after its original release. OfficeMax, the office supply chain, has used a few bars from the song to promote its stores.
