Answer: Deep Purple

Deep Purple are an English band first formed in 1967. The original singer and bassist, Rod Evans and Nick Simper, were replaced in 1969 by Ian Gillan and Roger Glover, thus creating the "Mark II" line-up. In their three separate incarnations, from 1969-1973, 1984-1989, and 1992-1993, this line-up released seven studio albums and two live albums.

Answer: Jethro Tull

Jethro Tull formed in England in 1967, and began undergoing personnel changes after their first album was released. The line-up mentioned here lasted from 1972 until 1976 and released four studio albums. The only constant band member from day one is lead vocalist Ian Anderson.

Answer: The Who

Another classic English group, The Who formed in 1964 and had the same line-up until the death of drummer Keith Moon in 1978. The Who released eight studio albums and one live album in that time. Moon was replaced by former Faces drummer Kenny Jones in 1978, appearing on two studio albums. Bassist John Entwistle died in 2002.

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath was formed in England in 1969 and released their self-titled first album in 1970. Often called one of the founders of heavy metal rock, the band released eight studio albums until Osbourne was fired in 1979. The band continued with Ronnie James Dio as lead singer, but after Dio's departure in 1982, the only stable element in the group was guitarist Tony Iommi.

Formed in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Aerosmith released their first album, "Aerosmith"(also known as "Dream On"), in 1973. They released five more studio and one live album by 1979, when lead guitarist Joe Perry left the band. Reformed in 1985, the band released another eight studio albums and five live collections by 2014.

Answer: Eagles

The Eagles formed in California in 1971 and released two studio albums with their original lineup before adding guitarist Don Felder in 1974. Leadon and Meisner both departed by 1976, to be replaced by Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, respectively. The band broke up in 1980, reformed in 1994 for one album, fired Don Felder in 2001, and released another album in 2007. Glenn Frey died in 2016.

Answer: Pink Floyd

Formed in England in 1964, Pink Floyd's original guitarist was Syd Barrett, who was also the main songwriter and creative force behind the band's unique sound. When Barrett's behaviour became so erratic that he could no longer perform, due to drug abuse and mental problems, guitarist David Gilmour was brought in to replace him in 1968.

This line-up recorded eleven studio albums before breaking up in 1983.

Answer: The Doors

The Doors formed in Los Angeles and released their first album in 1967. The band went on to make five more studio albums and one live album before the 1971 death of Jim Morrison due to a drug overdose. The band released two more studio albums as a trio, as well as a recording of Morrison's poetry set to music, before breaking up in 1978.

Formed in England in 1962, The Rolling Stones were at the forefront of the "British Invasion" of rock bands that found success in the USA in the early 1960s. The original line-up released eleven studio albums and one live recording from 1964-1969, when Brian Jones, addicted to drugs and disillusioned with the group, left the band and died shortly afterwards. Jones was replaced by Mick Taylor.

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival were an American band formed in California in 1959 as the Blue Velvets. By 1968 they had changed their name to CCR. Between 1968 and 1971 the band put out six studio and two live albums. Tom Fogerty left the group in 1971, after which CCR made one more record as a trio before disbanding in 1972.

In 1985, John Fogerty released the album "Centerfield", for which he was sued by CCR's record company for plagiarism. Fogerty won, as the court ruled that sounding like yourself was not plagiarism!
11. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart

Answer: Rush

Rush was founded in Toronto, Canada in 1968 by high school friends Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and John Rutsey. The band released their first self-titled album in 1974, after which Rutsey quit as he couldn't physically take the rigors of touring. Neil Peart joined as drummer and principal songwriter. Between 1975 and 2012, Rush released 18 studio albums and eleven live performances.

The band took a hiatus from 1997 to 2002 due to personal tragedies in Peart's life. Neil Peart died of brain cancer in 2020.
12. Justin Hayward, John Lodge, Mike Pinder, Graeme Edge, Ray Thomas

Answer: The Moody Blues

The Moody Blues formed in England in 1964, and the classic line-up of Hayward, Lodge, Pinder, Edge, and Thomas was set by 1967. By 1978, when Pinder left the band, the Moody Blues had released eight studio albums and one live album, most to critical acclaim and commercial success. Mike Pinder left the band in 1978 and was replaced by Patrick Moraz; the group continued to record until 2003.

Kiss was founded in New York City in 1973, and were immediately the subject of controversy due to their make-up and sometimes outlandish costumes. Critical reception was on the whole negative, but the band built a loyal following and were known for their live shows. Kiss released eight studio and two live albums from 1973-1980, when drummer Criss left the band. Kiss continued to record and tour, with different members, into the 2000s.

Yes was founded in England in 1968 and recorded a couple of albums before guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Rick Wakeman joined the band, creating the line-up that was both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Between 1971-1973, the band released two studio albums and one live recording. With new members, Yes found renewed success in the 1980's and new and older members of the group released the album "Union" in 1991.
