Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although their biggest hit in USA and Australia was "Shiny Shiny", the biggest UK hit for this band was "John Wayne Is Big Leggy" in 1982. Who were the band?

Answer: Haysi Fantayzee

Amazingly for a song with risque lyrics and explicit sexual content to say the least, "John Wayne Is Big Leggy" wasn't banned by the BBC and received heavy airplay on Radio One, eventually reaching number 11 on the charts.
2. In 1996, which Welsh rock band covered "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" from the 1969 film "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"?

Answer: Manic Street Preachers

Manic Street Preachers covered this track on the "The Help Album" on which various artists recorded songs for charity War Child, to help their efforts in areas such as Bosnia and Herzegovina. The band also released it as the B side to their "Everything Must Go" single and included it on their 2003 album "Lipstick Traces (A Secret History of Manic Street Preachers)".

In "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", the song is played as Butch (Paul Newman) rides a bicycle, pulling stunts to impress Etta (Katharine Ross).
3. In 1978, which country legends teamed up to record "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"?

Answer: Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson

This track was originally recorded in 1975 by its co-writer Ed Bruce and was a minor hit for him, but it was Waylon and Willie that brought it to a larger audience when they took it to the top spot in both the American and Canadian country charts as well as winning a Grammy Award with it.

The lyrics of the song advise that children shouldn't be allowed to become cowboys because of the rigours of the life, instead they should chose something easier like being a doctor or lawyer.
4. Between 1977 and 1980, Randy Jones was one of the most recognisable cowboys anywhere, especially when seen with a cop, a native American, a construction worker, a G.I. and a leather wearing man. Which band are we talking about?

Answer: Village People

Village People first found success playing for Greenwich Village's gay community before having mainstream success with "Macho Man" in 1978 which was quickly followed by worldwide hits "Y.M.C.A", "In The Navy" and "Go West." Randy Jones left the group in 1980, which was also the year of their last hit, although the band has continued with different line ups on and off.

The 2018 cowboy is Chad Freeman.
5. Who told us in his 1993 debut single that he "Should've Been a Cowboy"?

Answer: Toby Keith

Keith certainly started as he means to go on with this debut shooting to number one in both the American and Canadian country charts and paving the way for a further 13 American country chart top ten hits in the 1990s alone. "Should've Been a Cowboy" was played by radio stations three million times, making it the most played country song of the 90s.
6. In the movie "Riders Of Destiny" (1933), who played the part of a singing cowboy named "Singin' Sandy Saunders"?

Answer: John Wayne

In the late 1920s and early 1930s, singing cowboys were popular, although the sight of "The Duke" striding purposefully towards you with that distinctive walk, hand edging closer to his gun, eyes narrowing and then bursting into song does seem quite surreal today. Wayne's singing voice was apparently nothing like his speaking voice, so in the few movies he did play a singing cowboy, the singing was dubbed. Both Wayne and the studios soon realised that this wasn't a great idea and so his roles became straight acting, leaving singing to the likes of Gene Autry,
7. Acid Jazz and life on the range aren't normally thought of in the same sentence, unless you're Jamiroquai. Which 1994 song gave the band their first dance chart number one in USA?

Answer: Space Cowboy

This was the lead single from the 1994 album "The Return of the Space Cowboy" and built on the success of their debut album "Emergency on Planet Earth" (1993). Apart from topping the American dance chart, "Space Cowboy" was also a huge hit in Italy as well as going top 20 in UK and France.

In 2007, Jamiroquai set a Guinness world record for the highest concert when they performed a gig at 35,000 feet aboard a specially adapted Boeing 757. This record was broken in 2009, when The Black Eyed Peas played at 41,000 feet.
8. "I've been walkin' these streets so long. Singin' the same old song. I know every crack in these dirty sidewalks of Broadway" are the opening lines to which 1975 global hit?

Answer: "Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell

"Rhinestone Cowboy" gave Campbell his fourth American country chart number one, following in the footsteps of "I Wanna Live" (1968), "Wichita Lineman"(1968) and "Galveston"(1969) but it also went top ten all around the world, in countries such as Ireland, Yugoslavia, South Africa and Belgium.

It also became the first record since 1961's "Big Bad John" to top the American country chart and Hot 100 at the same time. The only downside to this song is that I know it's now gonna be stuck in my head for at least a couple of days.
9. According to a top selling 1974 album, who would you find teaming up with the Brown Dirt Cowboy?

Answer: Captain Fantastic

"Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy" was Elton John's ninth studio album and while it peaked at number two in his native UK, it debuted at number one in USA, giving him his fifth straight number one album in that country. The title refers to Elton (Captain Fantastic) and his long time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin (Brown Dirt Cowboy) and the album tells the story of their struggles in their early days.

The only single from the album was "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" which is about Elton's relationship with and breakup from Linda Woodrow and his suicide attempt which followed.

The "someone " in the title refers to Long John Baldry who helped him through this difficult period.
10. "I am just a cowboy, lonesome in the trail. Starry night, campfire light, and the coyote calls where the howlin' winds will" sang which Irish rock band on their 1976 album "Jailbreak"?

Answer: Thin Lizzy

Thin Lizzy with the great Phil Lynott as frontman were one of Ireland's most successful rock exports and this album gave them their breakthrough in North America. "Cowboy Song" from which the lyrics in the question are taken was released as a single in USA and Canada, but not in UK or their native Ireland and a great version of this track can be heard on their 1978 live album, "Live And Dangerous".
