Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At number one in the UK charts were The Hollies who, after five previous top ten hits, finally made it to the top - with what song?

Answer: I'm Alive

The Hollies enjoyed much success in the mid-sixties, including some minor chart success in the USA. Like lots of bands though, they experienced internal difficulty over touring and the material they were recording and, in 1968, the lead singer, Graham Nash left, partly because the rest of the band refused to record his song "Marrakesh Express" which, ironically, was the first hit for his new band, Crosby Stills and Nash.
2. At number two, their second and highest UK Top Ten hit, with "Heart Full Of Soul", was a band who saw some of the UK's finest guitarists in their line-up in the mid-sixties, including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Name the band.

Answer: The Yardbirds

Beck took Clapton's place in the band, then Page came in on bass. Beck was later sacked, and eventually Page was joined by Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham in a band briefly called The New Yardbirds, who soon morphed into Led Zeppelin.
3. At number three is the first appearance in this week's chart by an American act, the Byrds, with their only UK chart-topper. What was the song?

Answer: Mr Tambourine Man

Now thought by many to be one of the most influential bands of their time, The Byrds also suffered much internal strife and one of the key original members, David Crosby, was sacked in late 1967 and went off to form Crosby, Stills and Nash.
4. At number four was another American act with "Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love", his fifth UK Top Ten appearance, although he was never to achieve a number one until he duetted with Marc Almond on a number one record in 1989. Who was he?

Answer: Gene Pitney

Gene Pitney was always very popular in the UK, and toured here regularly, and it was while he was over here in 2006, after a performance in Cardiff, that he died in his hotel room.
5. Another American singer, Elvis, at number five. This song, which gave him his 15th UK chart-topper, included the lyrics "I've searched and I've searched, but I couldn't find no way on earth to gain peace of mind". Name the song.

Answer: Crying In The Chapel

The song was originally recorded in 1953 by Darrell Glenn, whose father Artie wrote it for him. There were many cover versions that same year - Darrell's got to number four on the Billboard C&W chart, Rex Allen's got to number eight, Ella Fitzgerald's to number fifteen and Art Lund's to number twenty-three.
6. At number six were a young British duo with their fourth, and last, UK top ten hit, "To Know You Is To Love You". Their first two hits were written by Lennon and McCartney, appropriately enough since Paul was dating the sister of one of them. What was the duo called?

Answer: Peter and Gordon

Peter Asher and Gordon Waller had considerable success in the mid-sixties, on both sides of the Atlantic. Peter, whose sister Jane was briefly Paul McCartney's fiancée, went on to become Head of A&R at Apple Records to keep the link to the Beatles going.
7. At number seven with "Tossing and Turning", their biggest UK hit, was a British band whose name makes them sound as though they came from the other side of the Atlantic. Who were they?

Answer: The Ivy League

The Ivy League's chart success was short-lived, with three hits in 1965 and none thereafter, Two of them though, went on to mastermind The Flower Pot Men's later hit "Let's Go To San Francisco".
8. At number eight, with her second UK Top Ten record, "Leave A Little Love", was a singer who had quite a bit of chart success, and also did well at the Eurovision Song Contest. Name the singer.

Answer: Lulu

Lulu went on to win Eurovision with "Boom Bang-A-Bang" in 1969. Sandie Shaw also won in 1967, while Kathy Kirby and Mary Hopkin both came second, in 1965 and 1970 respectively.
9. At number nine were The Everly Brothers with their last ever UK Top Ten hit in a long list of 16. Name the song.

Answer: The Price of Love

The Everly Brothers string of hits almost came to a stop when in 1961 they enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserves (to avoid being drafted into the regular Army). This was their first hit in the UK since "Crying In The Rain" in 1962.
10. At number ten, with her fourth UK Top Ten hit was the wonderful Dusty Springfield. The song contained the lyric "Over and over again you tell me you need my love. Baby you know that I love you, but I can't wait forever". Name the song

Answer: In The Middle of Nowhere

Dusty was at the height of her fame in 1965 and would go on the following year to finally top the charts with "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me".
