No, not "Blue-Eyed Goons." These are songs I've down- or uploaded on my computer iTunes with either "Blue" or "Blues" in the title. I'm sure you've heard most of them. Let's see if I'm right.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I do have some soundtracks among my iTunes. The song is "Blue Hawaii" from the 1961 movie of the same name. Who had the starring role and sang the song?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Yes, I saw "Blue Hawaii" when it was in the theaters 'way back then. But now I really get a kick out of Angela Lansbury's role when I see it on TV.

Elvis made over 30 movies between 1956 and 1970. My favorite was "Kid Galahad." The flicks were not critical successes, but the boy could sing, no doubt about that!
2. "Mr. Blue" was a hit for the Fleetwoods in 1959. But I don't have that one. The one I have was covered by a country star on his album "No Fences" in 1990. Who is this Oklahoman who also has "The Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places" on the same album?

Answer: Garth Brooks

"Mr. Blue" was written by DeWayne Blackwell. Bob Dylan and The Band also recorded the song in 1967.

Bobby Vinton also recorded the song on a 1963 album called "Blue on Blue" on which he also covered "Am I Blue", "Blue Velvet", "Blue Skies", "Blue Hawaii", "Blue Moon", "Blueberry Hill", and "My Blue Heaven", as well as five other songs. That's a lot of blue!
3. Let's stick with country music for a sec. "I got a feeling called the blues, oh, Lord / Since my baby said good-bye..." begins one of the great blues songs by the legendary Hank Williams. It was a number 1 hit in 1949. Hank had several hits with "Blues" in the title, such as "Long Gone Blues", "Moanin' the Blues", and "Honky Tonk Blues." But what was the name of his biggest "blues" hit?

Answer: "Lovesick Blues"

"Folsom Prison Blues" was a big hit for Johnny Cash. "Mule Skinner Blues" was a hit in 1960 for The Fendermen. "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" was a hit for Elton John in 1983. Yes, I have them all.
4. Everyone knows "Song Sung Blue" was a big hit for Neil Diamond in 1972, and, yes, it's on my iTunes. But what was another "Blue" hit for him in 1979?

Answer: "Forever in Blue Jeans"

"Blue Christmas" was a big seasonal hit for Elvis, while "Tangled Up in Blue" is classic Bob Dylan, and "Blue Velvet", written in 1950 and recorded the next year by Tony Bennett, reached its peak in the 1963 Bobby Vinton cover.
5. I don't have very many female vocalists among my iTunes. But one I do have had a hit with "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" in 1977. Which country singer sang this great crossover song?

Answer: Crystal Gayle

One story says the "Brown Eyes Blue" song is a follow-up on "I've Cried the Blue Right Out of My Eyes", a song written for Gayle's older sister, Loretta Lynn. Another story says composer Richard Leigh was inspired by his dog's big brown eyes.

Crystal Gayle also recorded a song called "The Blue Side."
6. Speaking of blue eyes, how about "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain"? Originally recorded by Roy Acuff in 1945, which outlaw country singer made it a bigger hit on his "Red Headed Stranger" album in 1975, triggering his career as a singer and not just a writer?

Answer: Willie Nelson

I also have "Blue Skies" by Willie on my iTunes, as well as Willie singing "Folsom Prison Blues" live with Johnny Cash.

The three incorrect choices probably were not recording in 1975, as Bentley was born that year and Shelton the year after, although Urban was born in New Zealand in 1967 and was performing at country festivals at age 10.
7. "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" was written by Bob Dylan in 1965 and recorded by him when he still played acoustic guitar. It has been covered by Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell, Marianne Faithfull, the Byrds, the Animals, and the Grateful Dead, among others. But my cut was recorded in 1985 on an album by an Austrian singer. Other cuts on that same album include "Rock Me Amadeus" and "Vienna Calling." Who was this European rock star who passed away in 1998?

Answer: Falco

Falco was born Johann Hölzel in Vienna in 1975. "Der Kommissar" in 1981, followed in '83 by "Rock Me Amadeus" rocketed him to fame in the States.

The three incorrect answers are also in my iTunes with "99 Luftballons" by Nena, "Dschinghis Khan" by Dschinghis Khan, and "Heast as net" by Hubert von Goisern, among several others. While von Goisern is also an Austrian, the other two are German.
8. "Jimmy Crack Corn" is an alternate title for this 1840s minstrel song covered by Burl Ives on my iTunes. According to the lyrics and title, what is the cause of the plantation master's demise?

Answer: "Blue Tail Fly"

According to the lyrics of Burl Ives' cover for the song, the master was riding his "pony", which was "bitten on the thigh" by a blue tail fly. "The pony run, he jumped, he pitch, / He threw my master in the ditch. / He died and the jury wondered why. / The verdict was the blue tail fly."
9. Linda Ronstadt had a big hit in 1977 with our next blue song, but my cover is by its co-writer, Roy Orbison, who first recorded it in 1963. Which of these titles am I referring to, which sounds like a Nolan Ryan fastball?

Answer: "Blue Bayou"

In organized baseball, when a pitcher throws a fastball by a batter who "can't catch up with it", thus striking him out, someone invariably calls it a "Linda Ronstadt Pitch", i.e. "Blew By You."
10. Our last blue song is really an oldie, going back to a 17th Century English folk song and nursery rhyme. Burl Ives covered it in 1948, but my cover is the 1959 cut which made it to number 3 on the pop chart for Sammy Turner. Can you identify its title, which does not include all the "dilly dillies"?

Answer: "Lavender Blue"

The original version included "diddle diddle" instead of the more modern "dilly dilly" and was titled "Lavender's Blue," reflecting correct grammar, meaning "Lavender is blue."
