"Penny Lane" reached number two on the UK chart in 1967. It was number one for one week on the US pop chart the same year.

"Penny Lane" brought to an end a run of 11 consecutive number one hits on the UK chart. If it had not been kept off the top spot by "Release Me" by Engelbert Humperdinck, The Beatles would have had 18 consecutive number one hits on the UK chart. If you have a US promo single copy of "Penny Lane" with the added piccolo trumpet at the end of the song similar to the version on "Anthology 2", get it valued as it is extremely rare.

Answer: Route 66

The Rolling Stones recorded their version of "Route 66" for their debut album "The Rolling Stones". It reached number one on the UK album chart in 1964. As "England's Newest Hit Makers/The Rolling Stones", it reached number 11 on the Billboard US album charts the same year.

"(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66" was written by Bobby Troup in 1946 and Nat King Cole was the first singer to record the song. It has been recorded by many others including Perry Como, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Tom Petty and Skrewdriver. The actual US highway ran from Chicago, Illinois to Los Angeles, California, covering eight states in all. Although it also ran through Kansas, the state and none of its towns are mentioned in the lyrics.

Country singer/songwriter/guitarist Roger Miller had a number four hit on the US pop chart with "King of the Road" in 1965. It was number one for one week on the UK chart the same year and was his only UK Top Ten hit.

He had over 40 hits on the Billboard Country chart. He also had five Top Ten hits on the US pop chart: "Dang Me" number seven in 1964, "Chug-A-Lug" number nine in 1964, "Engine, Engine #9" number seven in 1965 and "England Swings" number eight in 1965.

The original group were brothers Ray (rhythm guitar & lead vocals) and Dave Davies (lead guitar and vocals), Pete Quaife (bass guitar and vocals) and Mick Avory (drums). They were formed in Muswell Hill London in 1964. They had 13 UK Top Ten hits between 1964 and 1970 which included three number one hits. In the US they had five Top Ten hits between 1964 and 1983. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Nashville Teens (a six piece band at the time of this hit but had various line-up changes) were formed in Weybridge Surrey UK in 1962. They had two UK Top 10 hits in 1964. "Tobacco Road" written by John D. Loudermilk was their only US top ten hit.

"Autobahn" was written by members of the group, Florian Schneider, Ralf Hutter and Emil Schult. It was their first song with lyrics.

Gerry Rafferty was born in Paisley Scotland in 1947. After a stint busking on the London underground in the '60s, he joined a three man group called The Humblebums in 1969. The trio then became a duo with Gerry and comedian Billy Connolly (Billy who?) but they went their separate ways in 1971. He went solo but then joined Stealers Wheel in 1972 and they had the international hit "Stuck in the Middle With You", which was featured in the movie "Reservoir Dogs" two decades later. He then went solo again.

The original members of Martha and The Vandellas 1962 - 1964 were Martha Reeves, Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard. Betty Kelly replaced Annette Beard 1964 - 1967. The group had six US Top Ten hits between 1963 and 1967. They had one UK Top Ten hit when "Dancing in the Street" re-entered the UK chart in 1969. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

Folk-Rock singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot has had a number of hits on the US pop chart, "Sundown" was a number one hit for one week in 1974. It reached number 33 on the UK chart the same year. The album "Sundown" was number one for two weeks on the US album chart in 1974. It reached number 45 on the UK album chart the same year.
