Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Commodores had a selection of hits including "Brick House", "Three Times a Lady", and "Easy". Their 1985 hit song "Nightshift" made it to number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Who was this song a tribute to?

Answer: Jackie Wilson and Marvin Gaye

The song "Nightshift" was made as a tribute to two R&B singers who sadly passed away in 1984. Marvin Gaye was murdered after a heated argument with his own father Marvin Gaye Sr. Jackie Wilson, the man dubbed as "Mr. Excitement", suffered a heart attack during a performance in 1975. Admitted to a retirement home, Wilson would eventually succumb to pneumonia in 1984.
2. The Moody Blues had a US Top Ten hit in 1967 with "Nights in White Satin". Prior to this hit, they only had one song that reached the Top Ten in any country. What was the name of this hit?

Answer: Go Now

"Go Now" became The Moody Blues' first song to receive mainstream airplay in any country. This song was originally recorded in January 1964 by Bessie Banks. It gained greater popularity by The Moody Blues going to number one in their homeland United Kingdom, from their debut album 'The Magnificent Moodies'.

It would be another three years before they would chart another Top Ten hit. "Nights in White Satin" would top the charts in 1967 going to number one in both Canada and New Zealand and would reach number two on the US Billboard Top 100.
3. James Owen Sullivan, aka "The Rev", of the band Avenged Sevenfold, died after the release of their self-titled fourth album. Their fifth album was released in 2010 and was dedicated to him. The album included a Top Ten charting US Rock Song with the same name. What is the name of this album and song track?

Answer: Nightmare

Following his sudden death, police ruled out that Sullivan had died due to foul play. It was later determined that he had an enlarged heart that could have been caused due to drug use. Avenged Sevenfold dedicated their album "Nightmare" to him. It was their first recorded album that did not include Sullivan performing on the drums.
4. Bob Seger had a Top Ten hit in 1977 with the song "Night Moves". The lyrics of this song are mainly about whom?

Answer: Bob Seger himself

"Night Moves" was written as a means to show the "freedom and looseness" of his adolescent years. In an Esquire article written by Daniel Edward Rosen, he writes that during a radio appearance on 'In The Studio With Redbeard' in 2011 Seger discussed the inspiration behind the song. In particular, the song describes a period of time in which Seger was heartbroken over an ex-girlfriend. As the story goes, Seger had dated an Italian girl. It turns out, her boyfriend was a soldier on tour and she was having an affair. Seger was crazy about her, but things didn't work out in the end.

5. What famous actor who played King of Siam in the 1956 musical film "The King and I" is mentioned in the Murray Head song "One Night in Bangkok"?

Answer: Yul Brynner

Russian-born US actor Yul Brynner is mentioned in the opening set of lyrics of Murray Head's "One Night in Bangkok". As the lyrics go:

"Bangkok!
Oriental setting
And the city don't know what the city is getting
The créme de la créme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner"
6. In 1980, the Def Leppard album "On Through the Night" would reach the Billboard 200. What form of transportation is featured on the cover of this album?

Answer: A transport truck

A transport truck with the neck of a guitar on a dark background is featured on Def Leppard's first album. The record includes the singles "Hello America" and "Rock Brigade", but they did not chart very well in North America. It would not be until 1983 when Def Leppard released "Pyromania" that they would see mainstream success in North America. "Pyromania" included the Top 20 Billboard 100 hits "Photograph" and "Rock of Ages".
7. Complete the name of popular Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff song "Nightmare on my __________".

Answer: Street

"Nightmare on my Street" was released in early 1988 and went to number fifteen on the Billboard charts. Unfortunately for the duo of Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff, the song landed them in hot water. The beginning of the song includes a short story about Freddy Krueger. New Line Cinema who were the copyright holders for the "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series sued Smith and Jazzy Jeff for copyright infringement. Both groups settled out of court.
8. Which of the following food items is not mentioned in the Beck song "Nightmare Hippy Girl"?

Answer: Pizza

Avocado, salad, and tofu are included in three separate lines of "Nightmare Hippy Girl":

"She's a melted avocado on the shelf"

"She's cooking salad for breakfast"

"She's got tofu the size of Texas"

Beck himself has stated that although catch words in the song such as "beauty", "style", and "magical" are used, the song is anything but positive. The song is rather about a devious and cunning girl as defined by the segments "took me off my guard" and "She's a goddess milking her time for all that it's worth".
9. Alice Cooper's album "Welcome to my Nightmare" was his first solo effort.

Answer: True

Prior to the 1975 album "Welcome to my Nightmare" all previous efforts made by Cooper were released as band efforts. It would also be the only album Cooper would release with Atlantic Records. The album would reach number five on the 1975 Billboard Pop Albums.

The song "Only Women Bleed" from this album would reach number twelve on the Billboard Hot 100 and the title track "Welcome to my Nightmare" would squeak into the Top 50 peaking at number forty-five on the Billboard Hot 100.
10. A signed, legal document prevents the song "Because the Night" written by Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith from ever being covered.

Answer: False

No such document exists. In fact, many musical acts including 10 000 Maniacs, Cascada, and Co. Ro have had success in various countries around the world covering this tune. Co. Ro was a dance act that released the song in 1992 selling over 600 000 copies.

They have received mainstream success in Italy, Spain, and Belgium. In 1993, 10 000 Maniacs released their cover version that would peak at number eleven on the Billboard Top 100 and number seven on the Mainstream Top 40. German dance group Cascada released their version of "Because the Night" in 2008 and received some success in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Other cover versions have been released by Garbage and the Screaming Females, Kim Wilde, and German DJ Jan Wayne.
