The song "Nightshift" was made as a tribute to two R&B singers who sadly passed away in 1984. Marvin Gaye was murdered after a heated argument with his own father Marvin Gaye Sr. Jackie Wilson, the man dubbed as "Mr. Excitement", suffered a heart attack during a performance in 1975. In an Esquire article written by Daniel Edward Rosen, he writes that during a radio appearance on 'In The Studio With Redbeard' in 2011 Seger discussed the inspiration behind the song. In particular, the song describes a period of time in which Seger was heartbroken over an ex-girlfriend. As the story goes, Seger had dated an Italian girl. It turns out, her boyfriend was a soldier on tour and she was having an affair. Seger was crazy about her, but things didn't work out in the end.
