quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is a band-titled debut album?

Answer: Korn

Korn released their debut album, "Korn", in 1994. Metallica's eponymous album (known by fans as "The Black Album" to avoid confusion with the band) was their fifth studio album released, Alice in Chains' band-titled album was their third, and "Byzantine" was their fourth. The other bands that released their eponymous debut albums I have include (hed) p.e. and Soulfly.
2. Which 1992 release is an Alice in Chains album?

Answer: Dirt

"Dirt" is the most successful Alice in Chains album to date, reaching number six on the US Billboard 200 chart. The songs included on this album are "Rooster", "Dam That River", "Rain When I Die", the title track "Dirt", and "Would?".
3. Which of these bands released only three studio albums before the band broke up prematurely for good, due to frontman's death?

Answer: Nirvana

Nirvana were on their way to becoming the lore when 27-year old frontman and lead vocalist Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994. Despite releasing only three studio albums, Nirvana were inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 due to their tremendous popularity. After Nirvana broke up, Nirvana member Dave Grohl founded the band Foo Fighters by himself.

Alice in Chains also released three studio albums before lead vocalist Layne Staley died in 2002 from drug overdose. The band went on a hiatus following Staley's death, but they since returned and released more studio albums.

Type O Negative released seven studio albums before frontman Peter Steele died of heart failure.

Slipknot released four studio albums before bassist Paul Gray died from accidental drug overdose, but the band continued and released an album titled in tribute of him.
4. What band has the same name as to what the video game series "Halo" refers their regular multiplayer matches?

Answer: Slayer

Slayer is one of the big four thrash metal bands, formed in the early '80s. Slayer's original lineup comprised of lead vocalist and bassist Tom Araya, guitarist Kerry King, and drummer Dave Lombardo.
5. 'Music' is the second word of an album title was released in 2011 by one of the following bands. Which one?

Answer: Anthrax

'Music' is part of the Anthrax album title "Worship Music", their first album released since 2003. The first track of the album is the ambient song "Worship", and the two brief hymn tracks are one-instrument solos (one violin and one drums) played in ways used for worship.

In 2011, Limp Bizkit released "Gold Cobra", Sepultura released "Kairos", and Megadeth released "Thirteen" (hence their 13th album).
6. Which band released an album named after the last four words of the American "Pledge of Allegiance"?

Answer: Metallica

The last four words of the American "Pledge of Allegiance" are 'and justice for all', which directly inspired the title of the fourth Metallica album "...And Justice for All", released in 1988. The lyrics of "...And Justice for All" are about political issues, and the title track is about corruption.
7. Which of the following bands released their second album with a title that can be the second word following 'washing' and 'slot'?

Answer: Static-X

Static-X has the album whose one-word title would follow both 'washing' and 'slot'. The matching word would be 'machine', to make 'washing machine' and 'slot machine'. "Machine" is the second Static-X album, released in 2001. The songs played on the album include the title track "Machine", "Black and White", "Permanence", and "Cold". "Structural Defect" is my favorite song of the album.
8. The metal legend Max Cavalera joined all of these bands except for which one?

Answer: Metallica

Max Cavalera started his career with the formation of Sepultura in 1984. He quit Sepultura in 1996 and formed his second band, Soulfly, in 1997. He then formed Cavalera Conspiracy in 2007, followed by Killer Be Killed in 2011. Forming four bands in his career should make him a legend.

Metallica were formed in 1981, three years before Max started his musical career.
9. How do Nine Inch Nails and Fear Factory compare?

Answer: They're both industrial bands.

Nine Inch Nails and Fear Factory are both industrial bands. Nine Inch Nails were formed in 1988, two years before Fear Factory. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor was born in 1965, while Fear Factory frontman Burton C. Bell was born in 1969. Only Nine Inch Nails designate releases with Halo numbers.
10. Which of these bands had Inflikted as their former name?

Answer: Cavalera Conspiracy

After Max Cavalera and his brother Igor formed the band in 2007, they intended to name the band Inflikted, but because Cavalera was writing the song "Inflikted", originally for Soulfly, they renamed the band Cavalera Conspiracy. The following year, their debut album, "Inflikted", was released. The band marks the reunion between Cavalera brothers since they were together with Sepultura 11 years prior.

All of these incorrect choices had former names as well. Ulceration was the former name for Fear Factory; The Pale Ones was the former name for Slipknot. Type O Negative had three former names, New Minority, Repulsion, and then Sub Zero before settling on Type O Negative.
11. Which of the following albums was released by Sepultura?

Answer: Against

"Against" is the Sepultura album released in 1998, their first album since Max Cavalera left the band.

"The Height of Callousness" is the Spineshank album released in 2000, "Master of Puppets" was released by Metallica in 1986, and Nine Inch Nails released "With Teeth" in 2005.
12. An album title by which band is a pun on R.I.P.?

Answer: Megadeth

In 1990, Megadeth released the album "Rust In Peace": only one letter different than R.I.P. (rest in peace). It is one of the most influential metal albums of all time. The standard album edition has nine tracks and lasts over 40 minutes. There are wide variety of lyrical themes on this album, from Dave Mustaine's addiction to drugs and alcohol, to UFO conspiracies.
13. Which band released an album in 2001 whose title is a U.S. state?

Answer: Slipknot

Slipknot released their sophomore album titled after the band's home state, "Iowa". The album went platinum in the U.S. and Canada. According to NME, "Iowa" is the sixth best album of 2001. Two songs on the album were nominated for Grammy's. The last song of the album is the 15-minute title track.
14. Earth is the third planet from the sun, so let's apply this analogy to music. Which of these third albums was released by (hed) Planet Earth in '03?

Answer: Blackout

"Blackout" is the third (hed) p.e. album, released in the third year of the third millennium. The album reached number 33 on the US Billboard 200 chart.

"3" is the Soulfly album released in 2002, "Pandemonium" is the Cavalera Conspiracy album released in 2014, and "Follow the Leader" is the Korn album released in 1998.
15. Which band released their 2005 album whose title means a period of social chaos or repression, or the historical era following the Fall of the Roman Empire?

Answer: Soulfly

The answer to both definitions is "Dark Ages", the title of the fifth Soulfly album released in 2005. In December 2004, two tragic deaths of people close to Max Cavalera occurred - his stepson and his friend Dimebag Darrell of Damageplan and formerly of Pantera.

His pain suffered from those deaths inspired him to write dark music for the next album. At the time of release, "Dark Ages" was the heaviest Soulfly album.
16. The 15-letter title of an album spells the same both forwards and backwards. Which of these bands released this album?

Answer: Ministry

"Animositisomina" is spelled the same both forwards and backwards. It was released by Ministry in 2003, and is my favorite album. The semi-title track is "Animosity", which is first of ten tracks of the album. The album title is obtained by reversing 'animosity' in spelling without the 'y' and putting it together with the forward spelling with 't' being the joint letter.
17. What band fills in the blank of the song title "Children of the ________"?

Answer: Korn

Korn fills in the blank to produce the song title "Children of the Korn", which is the fifth track of the Korn album "Follow the Leader".
18. The main villains from "Jurassic Park" is used as part of the title of the fifth album by which of these bands?

Answer: Alice in Chains

First, you need to know the main villains of "Jurassic Park" - dinosaurs. Next, you have to find the band listed in these choices where the fifth album contains 'dinosaurs' in the title. Nevermore ("Enemies of Reality"), Limp Bizkit ("The Unquestionable Truth Part 1"), and Ministry ("Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs") were ruled out as none of these fifth albums contain 'dinosaurs' in the title. This leaves Alice in Chains, where the fifth album title is "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here", though many fans may simply call this album "Dinosaurs". The album cover shows a dinosaur's head over a red background.

I even listened to the "Dinosaurs" album while playing the "Jurassic Park" board game!
19. Which band has the titles containing the following months and holidays - "September Sun", "October Rust", "Halloween in Heaven", and "Christmas Mourning"?

Answer: Type O Negative

Type O Negative used four of these titles containing months and holidays, three of which are song titles - "September Sun", "Halloween in Heaven", and "Christmas Mourning" - and one of which, "October Rust", is the album title. There are several links between these titles. "Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" is the track of "October Rust", while "September Sun" and "Halloween in Heaven" are back-to-back tracks on the album "Dead Again". 'October rust' is said in the lyric of "September Sun" as well.
20. The title of an album contains what reads like a fast food-flavored liquid, in which the said food is the title of a song played on the album - by what band?

Answer: Limp Bizkit

The recipe answers are hot dog and water, combined to make hot dog flavored water, which was an inside joke by Wes Borland, about flavoring water with hot dog after seeing bottles of flavored water at a truck stop. The song "Hot Dog" is the second track of the album "Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water".

The album sold roughly 1.05 million copies in the United States during the first week after the release in 2000, making it the fastest-selling rock album of all time.
