Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What extreme metal English band penned albums like "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh", "Cruelty and the Beast", "Damnation and a Day"?

Answer: Cradle of Filth

The band leader calls himself Dani Filth, but his real name is a much more civilized Daniel Lloyd Davey. I've made up the other band names.
2. Here's another band from England that all you Doom Metal fans know for sure. Among their albums: "The Angel and the Dark River", "The Dreadful Hours" and a more optimistic "The Light at the End of the World". What's the band's uxoricidal name?

Answer: My Dying Bride

It is not very easy for the profane to tell Doom Metal from other forms of Metal. Let's say that Doom normally uses slow tempos, a tuning for guitar and bass lower than standard, producing an ominous, raucous sound to accompany the disparaging lyrics. Some critics note also that Doom widely uses the "tritone", a particular interval of three whole tones that in the past was considered dissonant and "wrong" and called, appropriately, "Devil in Music"
3. This band from L.A. have released excellent renditions of a couple of rock classics: Beatles's "Helter Skelter" and Brownsville Stations's "Smoking in the Boys' Room". "Shout at the Devil" and "Theatre of Pain" are among their classic albums. What's the apparently misspelled name of the band?

Answer: Mötley Crüe

The Crüe are Nikki Sixx, Tommy Lee, Vince Neil and Mick Mars.
4. "Dust to Ashes" and "This is Love, This is Murderous" are two titles from the opus of which "sanguine" American Hardcore band?

Answer: Bleeding Through

Hardcore or Metalcore is a sub-genre that mixes elements of Metal with Hardcore Punk, an evolution of Punk Rock. But in Bleeding Through you can spot traces of Melodic Death Metal: as you see, it is not a simple matter to describe the different metal genres.
All the other alternatives are actual names of bands.
5. A lot of lugubrious bands from the deep North have influenced the metal scene. This one is from Finland. Some interesting album and EP titles: "Absence of War Does Not Mean Peace", "Death Comes In 26 Carefully Selected Pieces", "Goat Perversion", "Sadogoat". What's the band's biblical/vampiric name?

Answer: Impaled Nazarene

To be precise, one more time, these Finns play mainly Grindcore, a form of extreme metal with typically speedy tempos and very short tunes (one second songs are a favourite). Impaled Nazarene are obsessed with goats in their titles.
6. One of the most influential bands, not only for the music, but also for the funereal name. They were from Brazil, but no bossa nova, believe me. Which band I'm talking about?

Answer: Sepultura

"Sepultura" means means "Entombment", "Grave", "Inhumation" (all excellent names for other bands). These guys produced many albums, one of which is called "Dante XXI", based on the Italian poem " Divine Comedy".
7. Deathgrind is another sub-genre that mixes, needless to say, Death Metal and Grindcore. A deathgrind band from San Diego recorded albums with names like "Homovore" and "Karma.Bloody.Karma". What's the very original and animalistic name of this band?

Answer: Cattle Decapitation

The gory name is intended to convey a concern about mistreatment of animals and environmental issues. A "green" band, somehow.
8. Among the forerunners of the Death Metal style, there's a band from Ohio, that chose a name with a greek origin. Notable album titles: "Season of the Dead", "Holocausto de la Morte", "The Divine Art of Torture". Who are these dark lads?

Answer: Necrophagia.

In Greek "necrophagia" means "the act of eating corpses". Obviously, Death is not an optimistic style. Among other characteristics, this genre features Death Growl, a way of singing with a deep, guttural, unintelligible voice intended to evoke despair, pain, menace etc.
9. The linguistic originality of this band is obvious in the stage names of its members: Shagrath, Silenoz, Galder. Or in their album titles: "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant ", "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia ", "In Sorte Diaboli". What's the name, in Old Norse, of this symphonic metal band from Norway?

Answer: Dimmu Borgir

It was easy, since the right answer was the only one looking Old Norse (or modern Icelandic)
Dimmu Borgir is a place in Iceland, where lava has hardened into strange formation that can recall the shape of dark castles or a lugubrious town. The name means "Dark Cities" . All the other names are real.
10. The metal craze has no frontiers. Nor has the fantasy for names. This outfit from Latvia chose a very odd one, and has a great talent for exhilarating song titles like: "Portable Anus", "Castration of Krupin", "The Urogenital Compost". What's the band name that, to give you a hint, describes a "caprine lack of water"?

Answer: Dehydrated Goat

The other three bands listed are Christian Harcore Punk Bands. Yes: christian metal bands do exist.
