Question 8 of 10
8. The Dictators were another protopunk act from the NYC area. More satirical and less arty than some of the bands in this quiz, they explicitly brought the sound of garage rock into the pre-punk mix. Their lead singer was always called "Handsome." Which one is he? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the early 1960s in Tacoma, Washington, a band formed called The Sonics. They are often cited as the "first punk/grunge band." In their most covered song, they sang that, "Some folks like water, some folks like wine, but I like the taste of straight ___________"

Answer: strychnine

"Strychnine" was covered by groups as diverse as the Cramps, the Flaming Lips, and L7.
2. The Velvet Underground is one of the most celebrated of all protopunk bands, even though they were largely ignored at the time. Here's a question from their third album, eponymously titled "The Velvet Underground." Two mixes were released, one by Lou Reed and one by recording engineer Val Valentin. One song is not just re-mixed but released in an entirely different take on the second version. Which one?

Answer: Some Kinda Love

Lou Reed's original mix pushed the vocals forward and left the band sounding muffled. It is called the "closet mix." All CD pressings of this album use the Valentin mix except Disc four of the box set, "Peel Slowly and See." I have no idea why they used a different take of "Some Kinda Love." I personally prefer the take that Lou picked.
3. The next protopunk band to consider is The Stooges. My favorite of their albums is "Raw Power" (credited to Iggy and the Stooges). The first song, "Search and Destroy" is a classic. The first line goes, "I'm a street walking cheetah with a heart full of ___________"

Answer: napalm

The album was produced and mixed by David Bowie. Its razor thin, almost bassless sound was widely criticized at the time, but it has proved surprisingly influential.
4. The New York Dolls are also a much admired protopunk band. Like most of the other bands in this quiz, they were almost entirely ignored when they were first performing and releasing albums, but they have grown in stature through the years. On their second album, "Too Much, Too Soon," they covered the song, "(There's Gonna Be A) Showdown." What artist first recorded this song?

Answer: Archie Bell and the Drells

David Johansen and company always had more interest in funk and other music associated with African-American culture than most other protopunk bands. They also covered bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson and the Cadets, an early R&B group, on this album.
5. The Modern Lovers were once one of the most obscure protopunk bands. They are still less well known than many of the other bands in this quiz, but their first (and best) album was produced by a former member of the Velvet Underground. Which one was it?

Answer: John Cale

Cale had an illustrious career as a producer. Among others, he produced the first albums of The Stooges and Patti Smith.
6. Speaking of the Modern Lovers, two of the members were later in famous and popular New Wave bands. Which two bands?

Answer: Talking Heads and the Cars

Keyboardist Jerry Harrison was later a founding member of Talking Heads, and David Robinson became the drummer for the Cars.
7. A quiz about protopunk bands would not be complete without some mention of the MC5. They came crashing out of Detroit in 1969, wildly out of step with the late-hippie vibe of the times. Guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith later married which punk rock icon?

Answer: Patti Smith

Fred and Patti were married in 1980, and both were mostly retired until Fred's sudden death in 1995 from heart failure. The couple had two children. The elder, Jackson, grew up to marry White Stripes drummer Meg White in 2009.
8. The Dictators were another protopunk act from the NYC area. More satirical and less arty than some of the bands in this quiz, they explicitly brought the sound of garage rock into the pre-punk mix. Their lead singer was always called "Handsome." Which one is he?

Answer: Handsome Dick Manitoba

I have no idea where the Manitoba came from. He was born Richard Blum in The Bronx.
9. We have reached a point where protopunk is becoming punk itself. Richard Hell wrote and performed arguably the first anthem of punk rock. He sang, "I belong to the ________ generation." How did Mr. Hell characterize his generation?

Answer: blank

At the time he first recorded this song, Richard Hell was playing bass for Television. He split off and formed his own group, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, while Tom Verlaine, Richard Lloyd, et al. carried on with terrific albums such as "Marquee Moon."
10. Nearly thirty years after breaking up, the surviving New York Dolls reunited and started recording albums of new material in 2006. Their first reunion album was entitled "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This." This title is a quote from which ancient writer?

Answer: Virgil

Although it is certainly an excellent title for a reunion album from such an illustrious cult band, "one day it will please us to remember even this" is a quote from the "Aeneid".
