Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following vocalists claims to be the first to use and popularize the devil horns hand sign (pinky and index fingers raised, the other fingers down)?

Answer: Ronnie James Dio

Dio claims that he was the first to use the highly popular devil hand sign. He also says that his grandmother taught it to him, saying when the sign is pointed at someone or something it means to give evil to someone, where as if it is pointed straight up, it means to protect from evil. Dio sang for the bands Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and for his own band during his solo career.
2. Name the vocalist that used a crotch sparkler during live performances.

Answer: Blackie Lawless

Blackie Lawless, singer for W.A.S.P. (standing for We Are Sexual Perverts), used a sparkler that was attached to his crotch like a cup. During one of W.A.S.P.'s live performance it burned his pants and eventually his skin, leaving his upper thighs burned and hairless to this date.

While Iron Maiden's first singer Paul Di'Anno, Slayer's singer and bassist Tom Araya, and Alice Cooper may have done some strange and weird things, one of Blackie Lawless' claims to fame was the crotch sparkler.
3. Which band did Metallica NOT cover in their Garage Inc. release?

Answer: Saxon

In their "Garage Inc." release, Metallica covered twenty-eight bands in twenty-seven tracks on a double release.
4. Which of the following infamous charactors in heavy metal snorted a line of ants on a popsicle stick?

Answer: Ozzy Osbourne

Axl Rose of Guns n Roses, Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P., and Dee Snider of Twisted Sister were not the ant sniffers, but the Ozzman himself. In his past, Ozzy Osbourne has done many strange things. Snorting a line of ants was one of his not as well known feats he did while intoxicated.
5. Which singer, along with John Denver and Frank Zappa, was a defendant against the P.M.R.C. court cases in the mid 1980's.

Answer: Dee Snider

Fronted by Tipper Gore, the P.M.R.C. was an organization that tried to censor and lower the distribution of obscene rock n roll albums. Of the rap and hip hop, heavy metal, and general rock artists and bands targeted, one was the ever so obscene W.A.S.P.

At the end of the court cases, the courts ruled that albums with obscenities will have a label to parents saying: "Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics". In the case of albums by heavy metal artists, sales with the advisory went up. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister was one of the defendants against the P.M.R.C., not Vince Neil of Motley Crue, Steve Tyler of Aerosmith, nor Axl Rose of Guns n Roses.
6. Name the bassist that lit his leather pants on fire with a flammable pyrotechnic gel?

Answer: Nikki Sixx

Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue used the flammable gel and one time caught his hair on fire. Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley are bassist and guitarist for Kiss respectively and Glenn Tipton is a guitarist for Judas Priest. On a side note, I wish to thank those that corrected me when I had a false answer as the correct one. A thousand pardons to those that missed this question due to my error.
7. Which singer started a fight with a fan live at a concert, and claims that the fan took a picture of him in his underwear?

Answer: Axl Rose

Axl Rose of Guns n Roses was the man. Following the fight, Guns n Roses quit their performance for the night causing a riot that trashed all of their equipment on stage, the place they were performing in and the surrounding area around the performance area.
8. Who was NOT a singer for Iron Maiden?

Answer: Janick Gers

Janick Gers is a guitarist for Iron Maiden and was recruited for them by Bruce Dickenson during their "No Prayer For The Dying". At the time he was recruited, he was also playing in Bruce Dickenson during Bruce's solo career.
9. Which drummer lost his arm in a car accident but still plays, substituting pedals that he plays with his feet, giving him the timbres that his lost arm would give.

Answer: Rick Allen

Despite that tragic accident, Def Leppard are still recording to this day with Rick Allen as their drummer. Steve Adler was Guns n Roses' first drummer, Clive Burr was Iron Maiden's first drummer and Eric Carr was a drummer for Kiss.
10. Which of the following albums was Pantera's first?

Answer: Metal Magic

Most people tend to think that "Cowboys From Hell" was their first album, yet they released four albums beforehand in their glam/power metal years, three of them with their first singer, Torrence Lee. "Power Metal" was their first album with Phil Anselmo.
