Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start off with an easy one. Mop-tops were all the rage when this band got it's start. George, Ringo, John and Paul were the "fab four". Who were they?

Answer: The Beatles

I can still hear the girls screaming... George Harrison, Ringo Star, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney were The Beatles. They were the most successful group of the 60s
2. This Progressive group hailed from the early '70s, when its band members were: Tony, Peter, Mike, Steve, and Phil.

Answer: Genesis

Phil Collins didn't take over the microphone for Genesis until late in the 70's. Tony Banks, Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, and Steve Hacket rounded out what was one of the first rock bands to carry the label "Progressive".
3. Fast forward, a bit to the mid 80's. This group from New York City has been called indie, punk, alternative, and grunge by different reviewers at different times. Their brand has always been decidedly not mainstream. Thurston, Lee, Steve, and Kim were its members in the early '80s.

Answer: Sonic Youth

Lee Ranaldo, Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore and Steve Shelly comprised one of Sonic Youth's lineups over the 1980s and '90s. I love the music video for their song "Dirty Boots" from the album "Goo". I wonder what became of the star-crossed lovers from the video?
4. In 1998 this band members were: Melissa, Patty, Courtney, and Eric.

Answer: Hole

"Celebrity Skin" was Hole's Grammy-heavy hit album from 1998. Melissa Auf der Maur, Courtney Love, Patty Schemel, and Eric Erlandson were there for the pinnacle of the band's popularity. Just four years later they would split up permanently, each pursuing separate projects.
5. Here's an easy one. Robert, Jimmy, and John Paul played together for 12 years (1968-1980) before the sudden death of this band's drummer brought things to a screeching halt.

Answer: Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin. Hair extraordinaire. Shirts optional. Epic, always. It's members were Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones.
6. This British progressive rock band formed in 1968 and is still active today. Several members have come and gone, but the music lives on. Members for an epic tour of North America in 1979, which was probably about the time of their peak of popularity in America, included: Jon, Chris, Steve, Alan, and Rick.

Answer: Yes

Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, and Rick Wakeman comprised the band Yes in 1979. Many of their artsy composition pieces of music from that era exceeded 10 minutes in length. Watch (on Youtube) the symphonic-accompanying live version of "Close to the Edge" for a treat!
7. Through the late '60s and early '70s, David, Jimmy, Robb, Mike, and Larry pumped out a few mellow chart toppers. Who were they?

Answer: Bread

"Baby I'm-a Want You", "Make it With You", "If", and "It Don't Matter to Me", were some of Bread's biggest hits. David Gates's voice is legendary. The other members of the group were Jimmy Griffin, Robb Royer, Mike Botts and Larry Knechtel.
8. How many classic rock bands had a member named Mick? Well this one actually had two Micks for about five years, in the late '60s into the mid '70s. One combination goes by the names Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Ronnie

9. Freddy, Brian, Roger, and John first played together in 1970, and boy, were they ever epic when playing live! Who were they?

Answer: Queen

Queen was known for their over-the-top production and creativity. Freddy Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon played together for almost twenty years before Freddy died from complications of the AIDS virus.

Cream only produced music together for a little more than two years, 1966 through 1968, and are responsible for creating and publishing four albums during that time. The final album, titled "Goodbye and Breakup" was actually released after the group had disbanded. Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton each went on to prolific careers in the music industry.
