Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This song with a name in the title is one of the most popular Elton John songs and was included in his set at Live Aid. Can you name it?

Answer: Bennie and the Jets

"Bennie and the Jets" (also known as "Benny and the Jets") is a song co-written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin that appears on the 1973 Elton John album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." It was his first top forty hit on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles Chart and has been covered numerous times by artists such as P!nk and The Beastie Boys.

It has been sampled by Mary J Blige and A Tribe Called Quest.
2. What's the name of the Everly Brothers classic about a boy and his date who fell asleep after a movie and are in "trouble deep"?

Answer: Wake Up Little Susie

The Everly Brothers released this song in 1957 and it was very successful, reaching number one on the Billboard Pop Chart and the Billboard Country Chart. It wasn't without controversy though and was, according to Don Everly, banned from radio play in Boston because of the fact that it was about a teen couple who were out together and fell asleep while watching a movie.

The boy woke up after the girl's curfew and was trying to wake her up to get her home, knowing they'd both be in big trouble.
3. This Crosby, Stills and Nash song allegedly about Judy Collins has a play on words in the title. Can you name it?

Answer: Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" is a play on the word sweet. It uses the model of the classical music suite, hence the play on words in the title. It was included on the 1969 debut album by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Stephen Stills dated Judy Collins for two years and has stated that this song is about his thoughts on his girlfriend and the fact that they were soon to break up.

The song reached number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 and number eleven in Canada.
4. This Zombies song begins "The summer is here at last/The sky is overcast/And no one brings..." The second track from the critically acclaimed album "Odessey and Oracle"; do you know what it's called?

Answer: A Rose for Emily

The English rock band The Zombies included this song on their second studio album. Although "Time of the Season" is a more well known song from The Zombies, "A Rose for Emily" is a bit more of an interesting song because it re-tells the short story of the same name by American author William Faulkner.

The short story and the song tell the tale of a tragic, sad and lonely life for the main character.
5. In this song someone is a runt and someone is a punk and they both went to Berlin to join the Ice Capades. What's the name of this extremely short Ramones song?

Answer: Judy is a Punk

Ramones fans know that their songs are quite short (even more so if you've ever seen them live as they play fast and furiously). This 1975 song from their debut album is one of the more popular songs among fans, despite only being one minute and thirty-two seconds long! The lyrics include the lines "second verse/same as the first" which is a nod to the Herman and the Hermits song "I'm Henery the Eighth I Am". There is an unbelievably cute video of a kindergarten class singing this upbeat and fun song.

Ramones have had a major impact on punk rock in the United States and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
6. For years, this Beatles song has had rumours attached to it that the letters of the main words spell out the acronym of a hallucinogenic drug. The band has denied this. What is this trippy song?

Answer: Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

This song was included on the 1967 Beatles album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and despite the widespread speculation that the song was about LSD (with the initials taken from the nouns in the song title), John Lennon states that the song was inspired by a drawing his then three year old son Julian had drawn of a classmate named Lucy.

The song was covered by Elton John in 1974 with backing vocals by a certain Dr. Winston O'Boogie, who was actually John Lennon (Winston is his middle name).
7. This Jimi Hendrix and the Experience ballad was originally released as a B-side in the US to a more popular song. What's the name of this softer song?

Answer: The Wind Cries Mary

"The Wind Cries Mary" was written by Jimi Hendrix. It was originally released as a B-side in the US to "Purple Haze" and then included on the 1967 album "Are You Experienced." It was released as a single in the UK and reached number six on the UK singles chart. Many musicians have recorded the song, including Sting, Richie Sambora, John Mayer and Pat Boone.
8. Wilson Pickett covered this Mack Rice R&B song in 1966. It was then featured in the 1991 film "The Commitments". What's the name of this song?

Answer: Mustang Sally

Mack Rice wrote and recorded this song in 1965, the writing of which is such a great story. Rice was visiting with his friend Della Reese (an American Gospel singer who had her own show and starred in the religious TV show "Touched By An Angel") who wanted to buy a new car for her band leader.

She was thinking of buying a Lincoln Continental but apparently her band leader wanted a Ford Mustang instead. Rice had never heard of the Mustang but thought there was a song in there somewhere so he took this idea and added in a little inspiration from a children's nursery rhyme "Little Sally Walker" and came up with the song "Mustang Mama." But wait, that's not the name of the song.

The legendary Aretha Franklin suggested he change the name to "Mustang Sally" because the name Sally was mentioned in the chorus and that's how you write and name a great song!
9. What's the name of this icky Kiss song about an older man who is infatuated with a teenage girl?

Answer: Christine Sixteen

This controversial song with an inappropriate theme was written by Kiss band member Paul Stanley and included on the 1977 album "Love Gun." The song tells the story of an older man who is infatuated with a sixteen year old school girl and because of this, some radio stations were hesitant to play the song at all while others only played it after 7pm.

Despite all this, the song reached number twenty five on the Billboard Hot 100 and number twenty two in Canada. This song was sampled on the 1989 song "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Lōc.
10. Dion recorded this song after he split with The Belmonts. Can you name this song in which he laments about a girl who is untrue?

Answer: Runaround Sue

Dion wrote this 1961 song with Ernie Maresca, a singer, songwriter and record company executive. It was the first number one hit for Dion after his split with The Belmonts, reaching number one in Canada, US and New Zealand. This song has been covered numerous times by many artists, including Leif Garrett, Chubby Checker, Del Shannon and Human Nature. Leif Garrett recorded this song when he was fifteen years old (he was born during the first chart run of the song with Dion as singer) and his version reached number thirteen on the Billboard charts.
