The musical adaptation of his novel about a jockey who squanders his prize money and is involved in a love triangle, was written by Johnny Mercer (lyrics), who also wrote the lyrics for "Moon River" (1961) and Harold Arlen (music) who composed the music for the movie, "The Wizard Of Oz" (1939).

Katrina And The Waves became the first UK entrants to win Eurovision since Bucks Fizz in 1981 with "Making Your Mind Up", with this track which was actually written to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Samaritans, a UK charity for people at risk of suicide.

Dolly didn't match the success of Collective Soul who reached the top ten in Australia and Canada and number 11 in the Billboard Hot 100 in USA with this track, but she did provide a great cover version with bluegrass band Nickel Creek, which won her Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

She performed this song at many of the dates on her 2014 "Blue Smoke" tour, although not at Glastonbury, where it may have been appreciated following the torrential rain and thunderstorms of that year's festival.

Valli's version of the track didn't crack the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, possibly because Valli's voice just doesn't seem to fit the mood of the song, especially when compared to the vocals of Scott Walker on the 1966 version. The song has also been covered by Cher in 1996, whose version was used in an episode of TV show "The X-Files", Keane in 2004, who used keyboards in place of guitars and Clarence Clemons in 1985 who obviously featured some great sax as well as sharing lead vocals with Darlene Love.

This opening track set the standard for the rest of the album, which included instant ELO classics such as "The Diary Of Horace Wimp", "Confusion", "Last Train To London" and "Don't Bring Me Down". "Shine A Little Love" was a hit throughout the world, especially in Canada and Ireland where it reached number four on the charts.

Barclay James Harvest have been around since 1966 and have recorded some great songs, although like so many great prog rock bands, mainstream success has always eluded them. They did crack the UK top 50 singles charts in 1977, when they reached number 49 with "Rock And Roll Star" and managed a top 20 album in 1976 with "Octoberon", but for the main part they rely on a hardcore group of fans rather than flash in the pan fame.
