Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Come Rain Or Come Shine" was written for the 1946 musical "St. Louis Woman", which was based on which 1931 book by Arna Bontemps?

Answer: God Sends Sunday

Arna Bontemps was a member of the Harlem Renaissance or "New Negro Movement" of the 1920s, which also included fellow novelist James Weldon Johnson, poet Claude McKay, jazz musician Duke Ellington and dancer Josephine Baker.

The musical adaptation of his novel about a jockey who squanders his prize money and is involved in a love triangle, was written by Johnny Mercer (lyrics), who also wrote the lyrics for "Moon River" (1961) and Harold Arlen (music) who composed the music for the movie, "The Wizard Of Oz" (1939).
2. According to The Allman Brothers in 1994, what is, "better than sunshine, it's better than moonshine, damn sure better than rain"?

Answer: Soulshine

"Soulshine" is one of the Allman Brothers' best known songs, despite it never being released as a single. It originally featured Gregg Allman on vocals and was was written by guitarist Warren Hayes, who also performed the track with his band Gov't Mule.
3. What did the moonshine drunk by Jake Owen and his country club date in 2011 taste of?

Answer: Apple pie

"Apple Pie Moonshine" was a track on Owen's 2011 album, "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" and was co written by Chad Kroeger, frontman for Nickelback. The song tells the tale of a couple from different sides of "the tracks" bonding romantically over a few drinks of 'shine.
4. With which song did Katrina And The Waves win the Eurovision Song Contest in 1997?

Answer: Love Shine A Light

Katrina And The Waves became the first UK entrants to win Eurovision since Bucks Fizz in 1981 with "Making Your Mind Up", with this track which was actually written to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Samaritans, a UK charity for people at risk of suicide.
5. "Shine" (1993) by alternative rock band Collective Soul, was the first big hit for the band, but which veteran of many country music hits released it as a single in 2001?

Answer: Dolly Parton

Dolly didn't match the success of Collective Soul who reached the top ten in Australia and Canada and number 11 in the Billboard Hot 100 in USA with this track, but she did provide a great cover version with bluegrass band Nickel Creek, which won her Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

She performed this song at many of the dates on her 2014 "Blue Smoke" tour, although not at Glastonbury, where it may have been appreciated following the torrential rain and thunderstorms of that year's festival.
6. "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" was a huge hit for The Walker Brothers in 1966, but who originally released the song in 1965?

Answer: Frankie Valli

Valli's version of the track didn't crack the Billboard Hot 100 in USA, possibly because Valli's voice just doesn't seem to fit the mood of the song, especially when compared to the vocals of Scott Walker on the 1966 version. The song has also been covered by Cher in 1996, whose version was used in an episode of TV show "The X-Files", Keane in 2004, who used keyboards in place of guitars and Clarence Clemons in 1985 who obviously featured some great sax as well as sharing lead vocals with Darlene Love.
7. "Shine A Little Love" (1979) was a hit single for Electric Light Orchestra, as well as being the opening track to which of their albums?

Answer: Discovery

This opening track set the standard for the rest of the album, which included instant ELO classics such as "The Diary Of Horace Wimp", "Confusion", "Last Train To London" and "Don't Bring Me Down". "Shine A Little Love" was a hit throughout the world, especially in Canada and Ireland where it reached number four on the charts.
8. Which track from the Rolling Stones album, "Exile on Main St." (1972) provided the title for their 2008 movie, directed by Martin Scorsese?

Answer: Shine A Light

Although the track was on the album from 1972, the band didn't play it live until the "Voodoo Lounge" tour of 1995 and it has been played occasionally since then, including at London's O2 Arena in 2007 and Amsterdam's Johan Cruyff Arena in 2017.
9. "The Sun Will Never Shine" was a track written by keyboard player Woolly Wolstenholme on which prog rock band's eponymous debut album?

Answer: Barclay James Harvest

Barclay James Harvest have been around since 1966 and have recorded some great songs, although like so many great prog rock bands, mainstream success has always eluded them. They did crack the UK top 50 singles charts in 1977, when they reached number 49 with "Rock And Roll Star" and managed a top 20 album in 1976 with "Octoberon", but for the main part they rely on a hardcore group of fans rather than flash in the pan fame.
10. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd must surely be one of the best known "shine" songs. On the original 1975 album, "Wish You Were Here", how many parts are there to this masterpiece?

Answer: 9

Side one of "Wish You Were Here" opens with parts I to V of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and parts VI to IX close side two of the album. The song is a tribute to founding member of Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, who was forced to leave the band due to his increased drug use and metal health issues.
