In 1969 the version of "He Ain't Heavy .. He's My Brother" recorded by The Hollies rose to number three in the UK and number seven in the USA. Following its re-release in the UK in 1988 as a result of the song being used in a UK TV commercial, it rose to number one in the UK. Elton John played the piano on the Hollies' recording.

In 1970 a version of the song by Neil Diamond rose to number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. The song has been recorded many times by, amongst others, Bobby Goldsboro, Cher, The Osmonds, Olivia Newton-John, the Shadows and Glen Campbell.
