Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1988 song by George Michael hit number 11 on the "UK Singles Chart" and number one on the US "Billboard Hot 100." What song features the lyric, "Put your tiny hand in mine; I will be your preacher teacher"?

Answer: Father Figure

Much of the rest of the lyrics to this song don't suggest fatherly feelings, such as this passage: "That's all I wanted; But sometimes love can be mistaken For a crime." The MTV award-winning music video suggests a real/imagined "relationship" between a cab driver and a model, possibly one that is breaking up or one that is in the nature of stalking.
2. Which song which combined a male relative with a famous military figure hit number one on the US "Billboard Hot 100" in the late summer of 1971?

Answer: Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey

"Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," by Paul and Linda McCartney, was the first in a long line of hit songs which were written or co-written by Paul McCartney and recorded after the breakup of the Beatles through the 1970s and 1980s. The song doesn't tell much of a story and seems a bit of a nonsense piece.

But it does feature a Grammy-winning arrangement that includes the sound effects of a thunderstorm with rain, a telephone and answering machine, and shore birds and the sea. Paul McCartney has said that the "Uncle Albert" of the title was inspired by his own uncle, whom he remembered with affection.
3. "Brother's Gonna Work it Out" was an R&B hit for Willie Hutch on Motown Records in the early 1970s; in 1998 it appeared on a compilation album ("Brothers Gonna Work It Out") by The Chemical Brothers. Whose controversial album, released in 1990, also featured a song called "Brothers Gonna Work It Out"?

Answer: Public Enemy

The album in question, "Fear of a Black Planet," is considered one of the most influential hip-hop records ever produced. Regarded by some as a call for revolutionary anarchy and by others as a manifesto for Black empowerment and self-sufficiency, the album sparked much debate and established Public Enemy as icons in popular music.

The album was noteworthy not only for its subject matter but for its use of innovative production techniques and musicality. Despite its controversial reputation in some circles, "Fear of a Black Planet" is consistently ranked by critics and music historians not just as one of the best rap/hip-hop albums of all time, but one of the best albums of any genre.
4. Which song, originally recorded by Willie Mabon in 1955, has also been recorded by such diverse artists as its author Willie Dixon, Johnny Rivers, John Mellencamp, Billy "Crash" Craddock, Sting, the Climax Blues Band, and George Thorogood, to name only a few?

Answer: Seventh Son

Perhaps the most commercially successful version of "Seventh Son" (or "The Seventh Son," as it is also known) was recorded by Johnny Rivers in 1965 for his live album "Meanwhile Back at the Whisky a Go Go." The album reached number 21 on the "Billboard" charts; a single version of the song made it to number seven.

The song was also part of "Crash" Craddock's 1971 (reissued in 1973) album "You Better Move On;" "Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm and Blues Orchestra," album featuring Sting in 2001; and John Mellencamp's 2005 reissue of "Rough Harvest."
5. Which song, from Dire Straits' wildly successful 1985 album of the same name, is a plea for peace?

Answer: Brothers in Arms

"Brothers in Arms" speaks of one man's love of his home country, the pain of seeing his comrades fall in battle, and his own resignation to a sad fate. It concludes with a plea that "we are fools to make war on our Brothers in Arms." The video is notable for its dissolving from a picture of the band with its instruments to one of the musicians in the same poses, but holding weapons.
6. Which number one hit contains the lyric, "And when he died, all he left us was alone."?

Answer: Papa Was A Rollin' Stone

"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," is a soul classic. It was first recorded in 1971 by The Undisputed Truth and was a minor hit for them in 1972. Later that year the recording's original producer reworked the song for The Temptations, for whom it was a monster hit, reaching number one on the US "Billboard Hot 100" and winning three Grammy Awards. Since then it has been covered by Was(Not Was), George Michael, Run D.M.C., and Phil Collins, to name a few.
7. Which song, recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1969, takes to task those who press for a war which will be fought not by them, but by the poor and non-elite?

Answer: Fortunate Son

Famous for the repeating lyrics, "It ain't me; it ain't me," "Fortunate Son" was written during the Vietnam War. But it was a more general indictment of the unbalanced burdens of war. In its day the song peaked at number three on the "Billboard" chart in the US; and it is regarded by "Rolling Stone" as among the top songs of all time.
8. No list of memorable popular songs would be complete without one from this band. Whose "Uncle John's Band" was recorded in 1970?

Answer: The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead was one of the most popular rock bands in history, although its forte was not so much chart-topping singles as free-form live performances for its legions of devoted fans ("Deadheads"). Its prolific recordings (over 130 albums) memorialize many of these concerts. "Uncle John's Band" was a bit of an exception to this model, as it was a more concise, structured, and widely relatable piece of music.

As a single the tune only reached number 69 on the "Billboard Hot 100," but it nevertheless was key in bringing the Dead, at the time an "underground" band, to the attention of the public.

The list of artists covering "Uncle John's Band" includes the Stanford University Band.
9. Which song started a boomlet in nonsense songs after its release in 1962?

Answer: Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow

It's pointless to speculate what "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" is about. The lyrics, what there are of them, seem to suggest the song is about itself - and how incomprehensible the whole thing is. Nonetheless, the song was successful for The Rivingtons, charting at number 48 on the "Billboard Hot 100." More significantly, it spawned a series of other nonsense songs, including "Mama-Oom-Mow-Mow" (of course), "The Bird's the Word," and "Surfin Bird," the most successful of the lot (number four). Believe it or not, "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" was covered by several artists, including, most successfully, The Beach Boys.
10. Inspired by an actor from a successful British sitcom, which song surprisingly hit number one on the "UK Singles Chart" in early 1972?

Answer: Grandad

"Dad's Army" was an iconic British sitcom which ran from 1968-1977. It featured the exploits of a local group of the Home Guard during World War II, a group composed largely of town locals who were too old for regular military service. One of the actors, Clive Dunn, asked a songwriter to compose a song for him.

The result was "Grandad," a lovely reminiscence and tribute to a family's beloved grandfather. Dunn recorded the song, which became a one-off hit that stayed on the British charts for over six months. From 1979-1984 Clive Dunn starred in a children's series titled "Grandad," although the song was not used for that show.
