Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the song being described. You took your girl, Susie, out to a drive-in movie promising her Mom you would have her back by 10:00. But the movie was kind of boring and you both fell asleep. Now you wake up and it's 4 AM. Our goose is cooked! Our reputation is shot! Ohhh, what will I tell your pa?

Answer: Wake Up Little Susie

Don and Phil, the Everly Brothers, really were brothers. They reached Number One on the Billboard chart with this song, despite being banned from Boston radio stations for suggestive lyrics. Or maybe it was because of the suggestive lyrics. They had a very successful career, but there was tension between them.

While performing at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California in July of 1973, Phil smashed his guitar and walked off the stage, leaving Don to finish the show. They did not get together again for ten years.
2. Name the song being described. You're out on a date with your girl and just as you're crossing the railroad track, the car stalls. And the train is coming. You pull your date out of the car and you're both safe, but before you can react she runs back to the car to retrieve your high school ring and CA-RUNCH. Well, I always said you were an angel. Now I guess you really are.

Answer: Teen Angel

This was the "Teen Angel" that was performed by Mark Dinning that was released in 1960. The song was written by his sister and her husband and it reached Number One on the Billboard charts and sold over a million copies. The British radio stations thought it was a little too morbid for them, and it didn't play as well there. Dinning had three other minor hits, but they weren't much. I guess you could call him a one-hit wonder.
3. Name the song being described. You borrow your Dad's car to go out on a date. It's dark and all of a sudden you come up on a car stalled dead in the middle of the road. No time to stop, so you swerve to the right. The last thing you remember is screaming tires and screams of pain. When you wake up it's raining. You find your date and give her a kiss as she dies in your arms. Oh, the humanity.

Answer: Last Kiss

The version I remember best is the one by J Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers. It was originally released by Wayne Cochran in 1961. J Frank Wilson re-released it in 1964 and took it to Number Two on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also re-released by Pearl Jam, Wednesday and several others.
4. Name the song being described. You're in the Army and you want to get married, but all you have is a weekend pass. No time to go home and get back in time, so you go to the chaplain and he authorizes you to send for her to come to you. You're in the airport waiting for her flight, 1203, but the flight is late. You wait some more, staring up at the ebony skies. Then you hear the announcement "Would those having relatives or friends on Flight number 1203 please report to the chapel across the street at once". Somebody pass me the tissues.

Answer: Ebony Eyes

This was another Everly Brothers hit. It was written by John D. Loudermilk and recorded in 1960. It reached Number One on the U.K. Singles Chart. Initially it was banned by the B.B.C. from airplay because it was too upsetting. If you've never heard and and pull it up on YouTube, be sure you have your hanky handy.
5. Name the song being described. I was out cruising in my Stingray late one night and this guy in an XKE pulls up beside me and wants to drag. So I told him if he had the nerve we'll race all the way to that dangerous curve at North Whittier Drive. Off we go. I'm in the lead until we hit the curve and I started swerving and next thing I know I wake up in the hospital.

Answer: Dead Man's Curve

Jan and Dean made a hit out of this song that was actually written by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, along with Jan Berry and a couple of others. By coincidence, long after the song had become famous, Jan Berry, the Jan of Jan and Dean was nearly killed when he crashed his Sting Ray into a parked truck near Dead Man's Curve. If you're curious, what is thought to be Dead Man's Curve is actually a nearly right-hand turn on Sunset Boulevard just after Whittier Drive in Beverly Hills, California. You can pull it up on Google Maps and go to street level view.
6. Name the song being described. You're a young Indian brave standing on the banks of a rushing river. On the other side is the love of your life, White Dove, throwing kisses to you. But you belong to different tribes that are at war with each other, so your love can never be. You can stand it no longer, so you dive into the river. White Dove does the same and you meet in the middle and kiss just as the current pulls you both under.

Answer: Running Bear

The song, "Running Bear", was actually written by J. P. Richardson, the "Big Bopper", who was in that plane that crashed along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Richardson gave the song to Johnny Preston who released it in 1959 and turned it into a Number One hit on the Billboard Hot 100. It was later covered by Sonny James, George Jones, The Guess Who and others.
7. Name the song being described. Jimmy is the love of your life. You met him at a candy store and he's the leader of a local motorcycle gang. But your father makes you break up with him because he's bad and comes from the wrong side of town. He's upset on that rainy night when you tell him and as he drives away, CA-RUNCH. I told him to drive slow. Maybe you should have broken up with him on a drier day.

Answer: Leader of the Pack

The Shangri-Las released this in 1964 and took it all the way to Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written as a follow-up song to their big hit "Walking on the Sand". It was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 in the singles category.
8. Name the song being described. You want to pop the question to your girlfriend Laura, but you have no money to buy a ring. So you enter a stock car race that is advertising a prize of $1,000. You're the youngest driver there and obviously the least experienced. The inevitable happens, the car crashes and as they pull you from the flaming wreck you ask them to give your girlfriend a last message. As Beretta on TV used to say, "That's the name of that tune."

Answer: Tell Laura I Love Her

The message that you ask them to give Laura is the name of the song: "Tell Laura I Love Her". This is a hit that was released by Ray Peterson in 1960. It was originally supposed to be a rodeo he entered, but the studio made the change so it would be more like "Teen Angel", which was a Number One hit at the time. You'd think the kid would have taken some driving lessons or something before getting into a dangerous race like that. Or at least get himself a pit crew.
9. Name the song being described. It's June 3rd in your sleepy Delta town in Mississippi and you're out chopping cotton. It's dinnertime and as you go in to dinner you Mom tells you that a boy named Billy Joe McAllister committed suicide by jumping off the Tallahatchie Bridge. You go through dinner while the family discusses it, not realizing that you and Billie Joe had an attachment to each other.

Answer: Ode to Billie Joe

This song was released by Bobbie Gentry who took it to Number One for four weeks in 1967. The song generated eight Grammy nominations and three Grammys for Bobbie Gentry.

There really is a Tallahatchie Bridge located near Greenwood, Mississippi. It used to be a wooden bridge, but it burned and was replaced by a steel structure.
10. Name the song being described. Your name is Tom, and you're a Civil War veteran. You have been found guilty of stabbing your girlfriend to death. Yeah, you did it, but if it hadn't been for that Grayson, you'd have gotten away with it. Now you're in a jail cell waiting until tomorrow morning when you will be taken to a big old oak tree and get hung by the neck. All you can do now is hang down your head and cry.

Answer: Tom Dooley

This song was taken to Number One by the Kingston Trio who released it in 1958. It's based on an actual event that happened in 1866 in Wilkes County, North Carolina where a man named Tom Dula stabbed his girlfriend to death and was hung for it. The song was so popular that in 1959 Walt Disney released a movie based on the song starring Michael Landon as Tom Dooley.

The actual jail and jail cell, that Tom Dooley was hanging down his head in for several months while the trial was conducted, is still in existence and can be visited in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. It hasn't changed a bit since Tom Dooley occupied it. If you're in the area, stop in. There are some other historical buildings nearby and a very nice park as well.
