The Beatles Anthology 3 Trivia Quiz

This third in the Anthology series covers the last days of the group, before it split up. In this series you get a chance to hear the unpolished versions of songs that the Beatles were working on. If you've never listened to them, I highly recommend it!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'I told you about Strawberry Fields, well here's a place you know's just as real. It's just another place you can go, everything glows.'

Answer: Glass Onion

This was one of John's and eventually ended up on 'The White Album'. In this early demo version John has very few of the lyrics finalized, so repeats the same verse over and over. The lyrics are reproduced as they appear on 'Anthology', which might be slightly different from the finalized versions.
2. 'Do you, don't you want me to love you? I'm coming down fast but I'm miles above you. Tell me, tell me, tell me the answer, you may be a lover but you ain't no dancer.'

Answer: Helter Skelter

This song was one of the ones that serial killer Charles Manson and his 'Family' used as an anthem for the revolution that they were trying to start. In fact, the words 'Helter Skelter' were found written on the wall in the blood of one of their victims. Many other songs from 'The White Album' were interpreted by Manson as the Beatles calling out to him to start the revolution for them.
3. 'In their sties with all their backing they don't care what goes on around. In their eyes there's something lacking, what they need's a damned good whacking.'

Answer: Piggies

In the original version of this song they aren't 'clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon', they're eating their 'pork chops'.
4. 'Desmond has a barrow in the market place, Molly is the singer in the band. Desmond says to Molly 'girl I like your face', and Molly says this as she takes him by the hand...'

Answer: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

This version of 'Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da' took three days to record but was never used. This recording marks the first time that the Beatles brought in session musicians to work on a recording that they subsequently didn't use.
5. 'Dream sweet dreams for me, dream sweet dreams for you. Close your eyes and I'll close mine, ______ ______, sleep tight.'

Answer: Good Night

This song was written by John as a lullaby for his then five-year-old son, Julian. Ringo sang it and it was released as the final cut on 'The White Album'.
6. '_____singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise. _____singing in the dead on night take these sunken eyes and learn to see. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to be free.'

Answer: Blackbird

This song was recorded by Paul without the rest of the group being involved. It was another one of the songs that Manson focused on, interpreting the line 'arise' as a call to rise up and start the revolution.
7. '_______ you broke the rules, you laid it down for all to see, you laid it down for all to see, _______ oh you broke the rules. A sunny day the world was waiting for a lover she came along to turn on everyone, _________ she's the greatest of them all.'

Answer: Sexy Sadie

This was one of John's that was also on 'The White Album'. One of the Manson family members involved in the Tate/Labianca killings took 'Sexy Sadie' as a nickname.
8. 'I don't know why nobody told you how to unfold your love. I don't know how someone controlled you, they bought and sold you. I look at the world and I notice it's turning...'

Answer: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

This was one of George's contributions to 'The White Album'. He brought in his friend Eric Clapton to play lead guitar. Clapton later fell in love with and married George's wife.
9. '...don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better. Remember to let her into your heart, then you can start to make it better.'

Answer: Hey Jude

This song originally began life as 'Hey Jules', a little tune Paul put together to comfort John's son Julian who was upset about the split of his parents. It evolved in to a massive hit for the Beatles. How many of us can remember dancing to it as teenagers?
10. '...all day long I'm sitting singing songs for everyone. Sit beside a mountain stream, see her waters rise. Listen to the pretty sound of music as she flies.'

Answer: Mother Nature's Son

Paul wrote this song after listening to the Maharishi give a lecture in India.
11. '...equipped with a gun to shoot off the legs of his rival. His rival it seems, had broken his dreams by stealing the girl of his fancy. Her name was McGill, and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy.'

Answer: Rocky Raccoon

This song, also appearing on 'The White Album' was completed in one eight hour long session. This version clearly shows how much fun the Beatles had recording it.
12. 'I wonder should I call you but I know what you will do. You'd say I'm putting you on but it's no joke, it's doing me harm. You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain, you know it's three weeks I'm going insane.'

Answer: I'm So Tired

There are two stories that have circulated about the meaning behind this song, written by Lennon.
One story claims that it was also inspired by their sessions in India, referring obliquely to long sessions of enforced sleeplessness while on the quest for spiritual enlightenment.
The other story says that it was written for Yoko, at the beginning of their relationship, while he was still conflicted about leaving Cynthia.
13. 'And if I ever saw you, I didn't catch your name, but it never really matters I will always feel the same. Love you forever and forever, love with all my heart. Love you whenever we're together...'

Answer: I Will

This song was also written by Paul while the group was in India, but was not inspired directly by the teachings of the Maharishi.
14. 'Everybody had a hard year, everybody had a good time, everybody got a wet dream, everybody saw the sun shine. Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. Everybody had a hard year, everybody got their feet up, everybody let their hair down, everybody pulled their socks up.'

Answer: I've Got a Feeling

This is one of the numbers that was filmed during the rooftop performance that was filmed for the 'Let It Be' movie.
15. '...and now she sucks her thumb in wonder by the banks of her own lagoon. Didn't anybody tell her? Didn't anybody see? Sunday's on the phone to Monday. Tuesday's on the phone to me.'

Answer: She Came in Through the Bathroom Window

A slower version of the song than later appeared on the 'Abbey Road' album, this version is the original recording of the song as Paul first played it for the other Beatles.
16. '...you and me burning matches, lifting latches on our way back home. We're on our way home, we're on our way home, we're going home. You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches on ahead.'

Answer: Two of Us

This was written by Paul and sung as a duet with John. It's another one of the songs played live in the 'Let It Be' movie.
17. 'The wild and windy night that the rain washed away has left a pool of tears crying for the day. Why leave me standing here? Let me know the way.'

Answer: The Long and Winding Road

This version of 'The Long and Winding Road' is without orchestral adornment (which was later added by Phil Spector without Paul's consent), featuring only the Beatles and Billy Preston on keyboards.
18. George Harrison frequently put forward his song 'All Things Must Pass' as a selection for release and even recorded a demo version of it around this time frame.

Answer: True

For some reason the song was not picked up by the rest of the Beatles so was not actually released until George's first solo effort after the split. In fact it was the title song of the triple album that he released.
19. 'Sweet Loretta Martin thought she was a woman, but she was another man. All the girls around her say she's got it coming, but if she gets it while she can.'

Answer: Get Back

It was during the rooftop performance of this song (for the movie 'Let It Be') that the police arrived to ask the Beatles to stop playing. Paul can be heard making reference to this as he's singing.
20. 'We would sing and dance around, because we'd know we can't be found.'

Answer: Octopus's Garden

Apparently an octopus will indeed build a garden, as Ringo was told by an old fisherman, which inspired him to write this, his second song. His first effort was 'Don't Pass Me By'.
21. 'You're asking me will my love grow, I don't know, I don't know. Stick around and it may show. I don't know, I don't know.'

Answer: Something

Written by George, this is viewed by many as one of the most beautiful love songs even written. Interestingly enough, George allowed Joe Cocker to make a recording of it before the Beatles did, although Cocker's version was not released until after 'Abbey Road'.
22. 'He say, 'I know you and you know me. One thing I can tell you you got to be free.' _______________ right now, over me.'

Answer: Come Together

This was the first song on 'Abbey Road', an album we all know was recorded after 'Let It Be' even if it was released before.
23. 'Because the world is round it turns me on, because the world is round. Ahhh, because the wind is high it blows my mind, because the wind is high. Ohhh, love is old love is new, love is all love is you.'

Answer: Because

This version of this beautiful song is presented with the vocal harmonies only. In my opinion it's worth buying the CD to hear this track alone.
24. 'When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom __________.'

Answer: Let It Be

Paul's first demo tape of this song is not far off the polished finished piece. John Lennon can be heard saying, 'I think that was rather grand' after Paul finishes playing.
25. 'Now they're frightened of leaving it, everyone's weaving it, going on strong all the time. All through the day ______________.' 'No one's frightened of playing it, everyone's saying it, flowing more freely than wine. All through your life ________.'

Answer: I Me Mine

Technically this is the last 'new' piece that the Beatles ever recorded together, doing so five months after they finished recording 'Abbey Road'. (Polishing up of already recorded pieces did continue after this song was recorded.)
