Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On their debut effort in 1964, the U.K. release "The Rolling Stones" had a guest from the U.S. playing maracas. This guest was also a legend. Who was music icon?

Answer: Phil Spector

Phil Spector was in the studio and lent his hand on the recording of "Little By Little". He is most well known for his career as a producer and the "Wall of Sound" but he was also a session musician.
2. In 1966, "Aftermath" was released and it was one of their first classic albums. Charlie Watts manned the drums but another member of the band was credited with playing percussion on the album. Who was that?

Answer: Mick Jagger

The multi-talented Brian Jones may have been the logical choice but it was Mick.
3. "Their Satanic Majesties Request" was released in 1967. "She's a Rainbow" is a classic song off that album. A future member of Led Zeppelin was credited with the string arrangement on the song. Who was it?

Answer: John Paul Jones

Led Zeppelin didn't form until 1968. John Paul Jones, maybe the least known of the Led Zeppelin cast, is a musician, producer and songwriter. He was bassist and keyboardist for Zeppelin but also plays violin, cello, recorder, sitar and many other instruments.
4. In late 1968, "Beggars Banquet" was released with an opening track that is brilliant, disturbing and infamous. "Sympathy for the Devil" had people thinking that the band members were devil worshipers. Bill Wyman did not play bass on the song, but who did?

Answer: Keith Richards

Bill is present and is credited with playing maracas and backing vocals on the track. Keith, however, played both electric and bass guitar.
5. "You Can't Always Get What You Want" ranks near the top of Stones' classic songs but, strangely, Charlie Watts does not appear on the track. Instead, the producer of the "Let It Bleed" album took a turn behind the drum kit. Who was this?

Answer: Jimmy Miller

Jimmy Miller had a long association with the band as well as other bands like Traffic and Motorhead. His career was relatively brief and he passed away in 1994 at the age of 52.
6. The Stones never had a full-time piano player but do have a long list of piano playing guests who appeared on their albums and on tour. The piano players listed below have all worked for the Stones but one of them did not appear on "Let It Bleed". Who missed out?

Answer: Billy Preston

Ian Stewart was often referred to as the sixth Stone and worked with the band from 1964 until his death in 1985. Al Kooper only made one stop with the Stones appearing on "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Nicky Hopkins began a relationship with the Stones in 1967 and worked with them into the 1980s. Billy Preston worked with the band on and off from the '70s to the late '90s.
7. Mick Jagger sang lead vocals on most songs by the Stones. This other band member played his regular instrument but was only singing backing vocals until "Let It Bleed". He took lead vocals on one track. It worked out pretty well and beginning with "Exile on Main St.", he continued to do so with each release going forward. Who is it?

Answer: Keith Richards

Keith sang "You Got The Silver" on "Let It Bleed" and "Happy" on "Exile On Main St.". "Happy" became his signature tune during Stones tours. He also sings most of the vocals on his solo releases beginning with "Talk is Cheap" in 1988.
8. "Sister Morphine" was released on "Sticky Fingers" with Ry Cooder playing slide guitar.

Answer: True

Marianne Faithfull wrote this song, along with Jagger and Richards, and released it on her own. Ry Cooder played on her version and repeated his role on the Stones version. Cooder is relatively unknown because he has never been associated with a major act.

His guitar work is very well known and Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him 8th in their 2003 listing of "The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".
9. On the title track from 1978's "Some Girls", this band member is credited with playing synthesizer. Who was that?

Answer: Bill Wyman

Bill took piano lessons until he was 13 years old. Its truly a rarity for him to play any other instrument but the bass for The Rolling Stones.
10. Bill Wyman left the Stones in 1993. He was replaced on a permanent basis. Who was the new bass player?

Answer: Daryl Jones

Jones began playing on the "Voodoo Lounge" release in 1994 and toured with the Stones ever since. He, like Bill Wyman, stays quietly in the background while Mick Jagger, Ron Wood and Keith Richards occupy the large part of the stage during live performances.
