Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original Limeliters included Lou Gottlieb singing bass and Alex Hassilev singing baritone. Who sang tenor?

Answer: Glenn Yarbrough

Glenn Yarbrough was born January 12, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1959, Lou Gottlieb was in the audience one night at the Cosmo Alley when Glenn and Alex Hassilev sang a duet together. At the time Lou was writing arrangements for the Kingston Trio and thought the two could help him make demos.
2. The Limeliters took their name from the Limelite Club, which was located in what city?

Answer: Aspen, Colorado

After singing there one ski season, Glenn and Alex had purchased the Limelite. The trio perfected their act there before making their professional debut at the Hungry i in San Francisco. In addition to singing, Glenn Yarbrough played guitar, Alex Hassilev played guitar and banjo, and Lou Gottlieb played string bass.

Their success was immediate, netting three recording offers only two days later.
3. Known for his intellectual interludes between songs, Lou Gottlieb was a Ph.D. in what?

Answer: Musicology

Louis Gottlieb, the group's comedic spokesman, was born October 18, 1924. He completed his B.A. at UCLA, performed as a jazz pianist, then became an original member of 'The Gateway Singers' whom he left to take his Ph.D. in music at the University of California, Berkeley in 1958.

He appeared in the 1968 movie "I Love You Alice B. Toklas" with Peter Sellers, and with George Segal in "Blume in Love" in 1973. He passed away after a short illness on July 11, 1996 at the age of 72.
4. What was the Limeliters' first number one hit?

Answer: The Limeliters never had a number one hit

The group's biggest single was "A Dollar Down" which peaked at only number 60 in 1961. Their albums sold extremely well, however. After a debut on Elektra, they found themselves in the top ten with RCA. Their second album, "Tonight in Person" reached number five in 1961 and stayed on the chart for a year, and their third release, "The Slightly Fabulous Limeliters," reached number eight the same year.
5. For three years the Limeliters were the musical representatives for what major soft-drink?

Answer: Coca-Cola

Despite their vast popularity live in concert and on the album charts, commercial success on the singles chart eluded the Limeliters. Ironically, the group's most widely known song is probably the 1964 Coca-Cola jingle, "Things Go Better with Coke."
6. Glenn Yarbrough left the group in 1963 to pursue a solo career, replaced by Ernie Sheldon. Sheldon wrote the lyrics for what song, which became Yarbrough's biggest solo hit?

Answer: Baby, the Rain Must Fall

This song was from the Columbia film "Baby, the Rain Must Fall" and was written by Elmer Bernstein with Ernie Sheldon. It peaked at number 12 for Glenn Yarbrough in 1965. Ernie Sheldon performed on three Limeliters albums, "More of Everything", "Leave it to the Limeliters", and "Limeliters Look at Love in Depth." He was previously a member of The Gateway Singers with Lou Gottlieb.
7. The group disbanded in 1965; however, the Limeliters embarked on a series of yearly reunion tours with Glenn Yarbrough in 1976. These were so successful that in 1981, Alex and Lou decided to reform the group. Whose soaring tenor filled Yarbrough's position for the next eight years?

Answer: Red Grammer

Red Grammer was born in 1952 in Orange, New Jersey. One of the most respected names in children's music, Grammer won a Parent's Choice Classic Award for his 1986 album "Teaching Peace", and in 1991 'Pulse' Magazine selected his "Down the Do Re Me" album as Best Children's Recording of the Year.
8. The group's second tenor left in 1991 and was replaced by another outstanding voice, Rick Dougherty, and when Lou Gottlieb passed away in 1996, Bill Zorn came over from the Kingston Trio. In 2004, both Rick and Bill left the Limeliters and joined a short-lived group with Glenn Yarbrough called 'The Folk Reunion.' Rick and Bill have since replaced original members Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane in what group?

Answer: The Kingston Trio

Rick Dougherty is included on one Limeliters album, "Until We Get it Right." Banjo player extraordinaire, Bill Zorn, a former member of the New Christy Minstrels, came into the group after a three-year stint with the Kingston Trio. Ultimately, Rick went to the Kingston Trio when Nick Reynolds retired, and Bill followed him a few years later, stepping in when Bob Shane suffered a heart attack and retired. George Grove completes the Kingston Trio at this time.
9. When Bill and Rick left the group in early 2004, tenor Mack Bailey and comic baritone Andy Corwin filled their vacancies. Mack is also a member of what Washington, DC based group?

Answer: The Hard Travelers

Currently residing in Maryland, Mack is originally from Troy, North Carolina, and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, graduating with a degree in music performance. Besides performing solo and in both the Limeliters and the Hard Travelers, he is active in a number of causes such as Maryland Therapeutic Riding, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Andy Corwin was formerly with the politically incorrect folk-comedy group 'The Foremen.' As well as being an accomplished film and television documentary director, writer and editor, he is also half of the irreverent duo 'Actual Size.'
10. Of the original Limeliters, only Alex Hassilev remains. He was born in Paris of Russian parents and speaks fluent French, Russian and Spanish. In 1966 he appeared as Hrushevsky, a Soviet sailor, in what movie?

Answer: The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming

Alex was born July 11, 1932 in Paris and was educated at Harvard and the University of Chicago. He contributed many of the foreign language songs to the Limeliters' varied repertoire.
Patrick Sauber is an occasional fourth member of the "trio." A multi-instrumentalist, he plays mandolin and banjo for the Limeliters. In Christopher Guest's 2003 satire "A Mighty Wind," Patrick played a member of the 'Main Street Singers,' and also performed on the soundtrack.
