Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What phrase was used by Archie Bell & the Drells and by the Black Keys?

Answer: Tighten Up

Houston-based Archie Bell co-wrote what would become the group's biggest hit in 1968. The chart-topping song is considered one of the earliest examples of funk.

The Black Keys, a rock band out of Ohio, released "Tighten Up" in 2010. While not a pop success, it topped the U.S. Alternative charts.
2. What two words link a 1977 Steve Miller song and 1987 Modern Talking song?

Answer: Jet Airliner

Steve Miller wrote a number of his hits, but "Jet Airliner" was not one of them. Massachusetts native Paul Pena wrote the song in 1973, but his version was not released until 2000 because of conflicts with his record label. Miller covered the song in 1977 and the royalties were Pena's primary source of income.

Modern Talking's "Jet Airliner" was from their 1987 album "Romantic Warriors." The song went top ten in Germany, Austria, and Spain.
3. "Hold On" has been used by Wilson Phillips, Roseanne Cash, Sarah McLachlan, among others. Santana's "Hold On" was first recorded by Ian Thomas.

Answer: True

Ian Thomas first recorded the song for his 1981 album "The Runner." Santana covered it for their 1982 album "Shango'." In a twist of irony, Santana's version actually charted higher in Canada than that of Ontario native Thomas.
4. Foxy Brown, Edwin McCain, and Reba McEntire all released songs called "I'll Be," but which of these actually wrote their "I'll Be?"

Answer: Edwin McCain

Singer-songwriter Edwin McCain first recorded his "I'll Be" in 1997. Foxy Brown's 1996 rap song featured Jay-Z on vocals and contains a sample of Rene & Angela's 1985 R&B song "I'll Be Good." While a number of artists took songwriting credit, Foxy (or her birth name Inga Marchand) isn't one of them. Reba McEntire's 2000 country song was written by Diane Warren.
5. Of the following, who did NOT release a song called "Angel"?

Answer: Juice Newton

Juice Newton released her cover of the 1966 Chip Taylor composition "Angel of the Morning" in 1980. Artists to have recorded versions include Billie Taylor, Evie Sands, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Olivia Newton-John, and Merrilee Rush.
6. "Changes" is another one of those titles for many different songs, but whose came first?

Answer: David Bowie

David Bowie first released his "Changes" in 1971. Yes (1983), Tupac Shakur (1998) and Will Young (2008) would release theirs later.
7. What links the only hit for British soft rock group Ace and the comeback song for Eagles?

Answer: How Long

Ace was led by Paul Carrack. Their 1975 hit "How Long" was about the discovery of the group's bassist secretly playing with another group. Despite the success of "How Long," the group's luck ran out shortly after.

J.D. Souther original wrote "How Long" in 1971. The Eagles released the song in 2007 for "Long Road Out of Eden," their first studio album since 1979.
8. What song title was used for tunes by The Association, Kool & the Gang, and Madonna?

Answer: Cherish

Terry Kirkman wrote The Association's "Cherish" in 1966, which topped the US charts for three weeks. Kool & the Gang's 1985 soft rock song is an adult contemporary classic and peaked at number two in the US. Madonna's "Cherish" was released in 1989 in time for her Blond Ambition Tour.
9. Terry Stafford and Eddie Rabbitt released songs titled "Suspicion."

Answer: False

Terry Stafford, known for having a voice similar to Elvis Presley, recorded "Suspicion" in 1964.

Eddie Rabbitt co-wrote and recorded "Suspicions" in 1979.
10. What year did the Dave Clark Five and Beatles both release songs entitled "Glad All Over?"

Answer: 1963

The success of the Dave Clark Five set off a rivalry with the Beatles and started the British Invasion. Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over" was covered by Suzi Quatro and Australian glam rock group Hush. It is the anthem of the Crystal Palace Football Club, who recorded "Glad All Over" in 1990 during their surprise run at the FA Cup.

The Beatles' "Glad All Over" was a cover of a 1957 Carl Perkins rockabilly song. This "Glad All Over" was also covered by Jeff Beck, The Searchers, and Brian Setzer.
