Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Canadian pianist, who died in 1982 was regarded as one of the finest interpreters ever of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach?

Answer: Glenn Gould

Gould had an incredible talent, although his family tree may have given him a slight advantage over us mere mortals as his mother's grandfather was first cousin to Edvard Grieg. His talents were responsible for him being nominated for six Juno Awards, winning three, and four Grammys, winning all four as well as a posthumous one in 2013.

In 1970 he was to be honoured with a Companion of the Order of Canada award by the government of Canada for his services to music, but he declined the offer, feeling that at age 38, he was too young to receive it.
2. Which disco star had a huge worldwide top ten hit in 1978 and followed it with a chart flop entitled "Anybody Wanna Party?"?

Answer: Gloria Gaynor

That massive hit for Miss Gaynor was of course "I Will Survive" which is still popular today as a gay anthem. Many artists have covered the song, including Billie Jo Spears, Cake, The Puppini Sisters, Shirley Bassey, Demi Lovato and Chantay Savage.
3. Between 1972 and 2019, who has been the only constant member of UK art rock band 10cc?

Answer: Graham Gouldman

The early 1970s were the heyday for 10cc as they hit the UK charts with tracks such as "Rubber Bullets" (1973), "Donna" (1972) and "Life Is A Minestrone" (1975) as well as having two top ten hits in USA with "I'm Not In Love" (1975) and "The Things We Do For Love" (1976).

The original band split up in 1976 with Kevin Godley and Lol Creme branching out as a duo while Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman continued as 10cc with session musicians until 1983 when they disbanded. In 1999, Graham Gouldman formed a new version of 10cc without any other original members, who although they have not recorded any new material continue to perform live to thousands of fans each year.
4. Which American pianist composed "Rhapsody in Blue" (1924) and the jazz tune, "I Got Rhythm" (1930)?

Answer: George Gershwin

"Rhapsody In Blue" is probably Gershwin's best known piece, and is often cited as the perfect example of how to blend classical music with jazz, while "I Got Rhythm" is a jazz classic and famed for its many rhythm changes. It came from the musical, "Girl Crazy" (1930) and was originally sung on Broadway by Ethel Merman.
5. Who was runner up to Will Young in the first ever season of TV show "Pop Idol" in UK in 2002 and hit number one in UK with his version of "Unchained Melody" the same year?

Answer: Gareth Gates

Voting in the "Pop Idol" final was tight, but Young took it with 4.6 million votes, or 53% of the vote, although I don't think Gates will have thought of himself as a loser as first "Unchained Melody", then "Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake)" (2002) and his duet version "The Long and Winding Road" (2002) with Will Young all hit number one in UK.
6. Who is the lead singer of Elbow as well as a reader of children's stories on pre-school TV show "Bedtime Stories"?

Answer: Guy Garvey

Elbow won two Ivor Novello awards for the song "One Day Like This" (2008) and another one for "Grounds For Divorce" (2008), both Guy Garvey compositions. The kids TV show "Bedtime Stories" sees various celebrities reading a story to child viewers and Garvey has read "Mr Big" by Ed Vere and "Farmer Joe and the Music Show" by Tony Mitton and Guy Parker-Rees among others.

He also appeared as a recurring character in the smash Peter Kay comedy "Car Share" in 2017.
7. Which Australian represented UK at the 1996 Eurovision Song Contest with the song, "Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit"?

Answer: Gina G

Gina Gardiner, better known as Gina G, was born in Brisbane and became a respected DJ on the Melbourne dance scene before moving to UK in 1995. "Ooh Aah... Just a Little Bit" achieved something very rarely done by Eurovision entries, when it charted in USA, eventually reaching number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

It was a number one in the charts in UK, Scotland and Israel as well as reaching number two on the Canadian dance charts. It also did well in Gina's homeland, peaking at number five on the Australian charts.
8. Who is the lead singer for Los Angeles punk band Bad Religion and also a lecturer in natural sciences at Cornell University?

Answer: Greg Graffin

Bad Religion's biggest hit was "21st Century (Digital Boy)" in 1994 which reached number 41 in UK chart and number 11 in the American alternative rock chart. Graffin obtained his bachelor's and master's at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) before going on to earn his PhD at Cornell. He taught natural science courses at UCLA in 2009 and at Cornell in 2011.
9. Which Brazilian guitarist and Jimi Hendrix fan served as his country's Minister of Culture between 2003 and 2008?

Answer: Gilberto Gil

Gil is an incredibly talented musician, proficient in traditional Brazilian musical genres such as tropicalia, samba and forro as well as rock and reggae. He entered politics in 1987, and continues to combine his political life with touring and recording.
10. Who was a songwriting partner to Carole King as well as being her husband between 1959 and 1969?

Answer: Gerry Goffin

Gerry Goffin co wrote the tracks "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?", "Smackwater Jack" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" from King's 1971 mega selling "Tapestry" album, as well as hits by artists such as the Drifters, Gladys Knight and Diana Ross. When he died in 2014, King paid tribute, saying "Gerry's words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn't know how to say".
