Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1967, became the first person to win the Eurovision Song Contest for UK.

Answer: Sandie Shaw

Shaw had managed two UK number one hits in the early 1960s with "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me" (1964) and "Long Live Love" (1965), but then the hits dried up until she was selected to represent UK at Eurovision. The entry, "Puppet on a String" was annoyingly catchy and not only won the contest, but also provided her with her third and final UK number one.
2. Scottish singer, lead vocalist of Texas since 1988.

Answer: Sharleen Spiteri

Spiteri formed Texas in 1986, and the band didn't have to wait long for success as their debut single, "I Don't Want a Lover" went top ten in UK and Australia.
They have followed this with many more UK top 20 hits and in 2008, Spiteri released her first solo album, "Melody", from which she had a UK top 30 hit with "All the Times I Cried".
3. Lead vocalist with rock band Creed.

Answer: Scott Stapp

Creed, with Stapp on vocals, are remembered for their huge hit of 2000, "With Arms Wide Open", which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in USA and in 2001, won a Grammy Award as best rock song.
Creed entered into a period of hiatus in 2013, and Stapp has released solo albums since that time, including "Proof of Life" (2013) from which the single, "Slow Suicide" gave him a number one on America's Billboard Christian Rock chart.
4. Former member of Buffalo Springfield and Manassas. Had a solo Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit with "Love the One You're With" in 1970.

Answer: Stephen Stills

Stills is a multi instrumentalist, capable of playing almost any instrument, and often did on studio recordings while a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash and CSNY.
This makes his stripped back album, "Stills Alone" (1991) all the more special, as most of the tracks are just Stills and a guitar, with no other accompaniment.
In 2017, he released an album of duets with his former lover Judy Collins, entitled "Everybody Knows" which contained covers of tracks from artists such as Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.
5. Released the 2017 album, "The Thrill of It All" which went to number one in UK, Ireland, Canada and in USA on the Billboard 200.

Answer: Sam Smith

Smith burst onto the music scene in 2012 when he was the featured vocalist on "Latch", a track by EDM band Disclosure, which reached number 11 on the UK charts.
His first solo success was when the single "Money on My Mind" was released in 2014, and rocketed to the top of UK charts and this was followed the same year by "Stay with Me" with gave him his second UK number one as well as hitting the top in Canada and New Zealand.
6. Indie folk artist, released the critically acclaimed album, "Carrie & Lowell" in 2015.

Answer: Sufjan Stevens

Although Stevens is often referred to as a folk artist, he records in so many different styles, he can be hard to categorise.
His debut album, "A Sun Came" (2000) had a folk rock feel, but by 2001, the follow up album, "Enjoy Your Rabbit" had a definite electronica feel.
2015s "Carrie & Lowell" saw a stripped back folk approach while "Michigan" (2003) saw a mixture of all these genres and more besides.
7. Stage name of alternative rock vocalist Susan Ballion.

Answer: Siouxsie Sioux

As lead singer of the Banshees, Siouxsie hit the UK charts many times over the course of the band's 20 year existence, including with five UK top 20 hits, the biggest hit of which was a cover of the Beatles 1968 track, "Dear Prudence" which reached number three in 1983.
In 1981, Siouxsie formed the Creatures with Banshees drummer Budgie and had minor success, and since the break up of the Banshees in 1996, she has released a solo album , "Mantaray" (2007) which although it didn't produce any singles or chart success, was well received by music critics.
8. Oscar winning songwriter. Wrote songs for the movie, "Dick Tracy" (1990) and stage show "Into the Woods" (1987).

Answer: Stephen Sondheim

Sondheim is one the greatest ever songwriters for musical stage shows and in 2008, set a record for Tony Awards received when he collected his eighth.
As well as musical theatre he has written music for the Warren Beatty movie, "Reds" (1981), for the Robin Williams movie, "The Birdcage" (1996) and, surely the high point of his career, guested as himself in a 2007 episode of TV show, "The Simpsons".
9. Welsh singer, topped the UK charts in 1981 with a remake of Rosemary Clooney's 1954 hit, "This Ole House".

Answer: Shakin' Stevens

When punk and new wave music were at their height, how did the record buying public of UK react? By making a star out of a Welsh rock 'n' roll singing milkman of course.
Shaky first broke into the UK top 40 in 1980, with "Hot Dog" and over the course of the next 25 years had an amazing 33 Top 40 hits, including four number one records with, "Green Door" (1981), "Oh Julie" (1982) and "Merry Christmas Everyone" (1985) in addition to "This Ole House".
10. Original bass player in the Beatles. Died in 1962.

Answer: Stuart Sutcliffe

Sutcliffe may not be well remembered, but he was a member of the Beatles, back when they were a five piece band along with Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and drummer Pete Best.
He was with the band when they took up their now famous residency in Hamburg, and it was here that he met his girlfriend, later fiancee, Astrid Kirchherr, who gave him a "mop top" haircut that the rest of the band soon copied.
Sutcliffe quit the band in July 1961 to pursue his first love of painting and died on 10 April 1962 of a cerebral haemorrhage.
He was just 21 years old, but remains immortalised both by his paintings and his presence on the cover of the Beatles' 1967 album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" .
