Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Xmas number 1 in 1990?

Answer: "Saviour's Day" by Cliff Richard

Born October 14th 1940, his real name is Harry Roger Webb. He is Britain's most successful solo artist with over 60 top ten entries. In 1995 he got a well-deserved knighthood.
2. Xmas number 1 in 1991?

Answer: "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen

Arguably one of the greatest bands of all time, this band consisted of members Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" was originally a huge hit in 1975, when it stayed at the number 1 spot for 9 weeks including Xmas. Due to the tragic and untimely death of lead singer Freddie Mercury on November 24th 1991, this record was re-released and went straight to the top of the charts for 5 weeks.
3. Xmas number 1 in 1992?

Answer: "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston

Originally this was a song by Dolly Parton from her album "Jolene". This was a track from the film "The Bodyguard" starring Whitney and Kevin Costner.
4. Xmas number 1 in 1993?

Answer: "Mr Blobby" by Mr Blobby

Originally Mr Blobby was a segment on "Noel Edmund's House Party." He was a big blob that was all pink with yellow spots and used to fool celebrities and get them doing the strangest things under the pretense that it was for a children's programme. It was very funny at the time.

This song actually got to number 1 twice. It was released 3 weeks before Xmas, got to number 1, was then knocked off by Take That, but managed to regain the top spot for Xmas. Just goes to show how crazy and unpredictable the Xmas number 1 used to be.
5. Xmas number 1 in 1994?

Answer: "Stay Another Day" by East 17

One of the many 'Boy Bands' that were around at the time. Their name was taken from the London postal code from which they originated. Their debut single, 'House Of Love', became a major hit in 1992, peaking at number 10 in the UK charts. After a few more hit songs they finally hit the UK number 1 spot in December with "Stay Another Day." But it all went sour when their lead singer Brian Harvey was sacked by the band in January 1997 after some ill-chosen comments about the drug Ecstasy.

Although he was eventually taken back, the band never enjoyed the same degree of success.
6. Xmas number 1 in 1995?

Answer: "The Earth Song" by Michael Jackson

Another legend in the music industry. He may have, at times, had controversial moments in his career, but there is no denying his musical genius. Started out in the late 60's with his brothers, The Jackson Five, and produced his first solo album "Off The Wall" in 1979, which was a huge success.

In 1982 he produced one of the biggest selling albums of all time, "Thriller", which spawned numerous hits such as "Beat It", Billie Jean", and the title track. "Thriller" produced at the time one of the most expensive music videos ever made.
7. All the listed songs for the next three questions are by the Spice Girls because for the next three Xmases they dominated the top spot. Can you remember in what order? If so give me the number 1 in 1996.

Answer: "2 become 1"

The beginning of 'Girl Power' started in 1996 with their first single "Wannabe" and began what can only be called a huge phenomenon. It was an instant hit that made the girls famous all over the world. The single topped the charts in more than 30 countries. Each band member had a nickname: Victoria Adams was 'Posh Spice', Mel Brown was 'Scary Spice', Emma Bunton was 'Baby Spice', Melanie Chisolm was 'Sporty Spice', and Geri Halliwell was 'Ginger Spice'.

In October 1996, they released their second single, "Say You'll Be There".

It topped the charts in more than 50 countries. Later, in May 1997, it entered the US charts at number 5 which at the time was the highest entry in history by a European act. In December 1996, the third Spice Girls single, "2 Become 1", was released.

It became the third single in a row to top the charts and also the third single in a row to sell more than one million copies. This had never been done before.
8. Spice Girls Xmas number 1 in 1997?

Answer: "Too Much"

In March 1997 their fourth UK Number 1 was the double A-side single, "Mama / Who Do You Think You Are". The Spice Girls became the first act in history to top the charts with their four first singles. In October 1997 the Spice Girls topped the charts for the fifth time in a row with "Spice Up Your Life".

In December 1997, the sixth Spice Girls single, "Too Much", became the sixth Number 1 hit in a row. The seventh Spice Girls single, "Stop", released in March 1998, never topped the charts and 'only' reached Number 2. Rumours began to circulate again that they were going to break up. On May 31, 1998, the 'Fab Five' suddenly became the 'Fab Four' as Geri Halliwell decided to leave the Spice Girls.
9. Spice Girls Xmas number 1 in 1998?

Answer: "Goodbye"

The rumours about the end of the Spice Girls proved wrong as the the next Spice Girls single to be released, "Viva Forever", went straight into the top of the charts in July 1998, making it the seventh Number 1 hit. "Goodbye" was their 8th number 1 and was a farewell tribute to Geri. Then after a break of nearly 2 years the Spice Girls made pop history with the release of their double-A side single, "Holler/Let Love Lead the Way", making the Spice Girls the first all-female group to have nine number one singles.
10. And finally, what was the Xmas number 1 in 1999?

Answer: "I Have A Dream" by Westlife

One of the most poular and successful 'Boys Bands' of all time in the UK. Five lads from Ireland, managed by Ronan Keating, came onto the scene in 1999 when their first single, "Swear It Again", went straight to number 1. They had two more number 1's before "I Have A Dream", a cover version of an Abba Song, made it 4 in a row.
All answers given contain the number 1 that preceded and succeeded the Xmas number 1 plus a huge hit from that year. I hope you enjoyed it.
