"Bridge Over Troubled Water" won five Grammy Awards at the 13th Grammy Awards in 1971. Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Contemporary Song, Best Engineered Record, and Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists. The eponymous album also won Album of the Year. "Joy To The World" written by Hoyt Axton was number one for six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for Three Dog Night in 1971. It peaked at number 24 on the UK Singles Chart the same year.

Not all of Three Dog Night liked the song or wanted to record it but singer Chuck Negron changed their minds. All seven group members sang on the record, not just the three main vocalists. When the song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Hoyt Axton joined his mother Mae as writers of number one hits, she co-wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" for Elvis Presley.

"My Sharona" written by Doug Fieger/Berton Averre was number one for six weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 for The Knack in 1979. It peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart the same year.

The Knack were Berton Averre (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Doug Fieger (rhythm guitar, vocals), Bruce Gary (drums) and Prescott Niles (bass guitar). Capitol signed them for the biggest fee in the label's history but with their 1960s look and pop/rock sound they were accused of being Beatles rip-offs, which led to a "Knuke the Knack" campaign.
