Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these bands was not part of the "Motown Sound"?

Answer: The O'Jays

The O'Jays were leaders in the "Philadelphia Sound" soul music movement. The Temptations, The Four Tops, and The Miracles were Motown ["Detroit Sound"] legends. Though it did not quite have the same intensity as the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry, the Motown-Philly era provided some fine music!
2. Three of these bands share roots in ancestral heritage. Which band does not belong?

Answer: BlackHawk

Redbone, The Band, and Blackfoot all had members of Native American descent: Redbone's Lolly and Pat Vegas are Yaqui and Peter DePoe ["Last Walking Bear"] is Cheyenne. Robbie Robertson of The Band was born to a Jewish father and Mohawk mother, and Rickey Medlocke and the late Jakson Spires of Blackfoot are of Blackfoot descent. None of BlackHawk's members were of Native American descent.
3. Which band's history does not share a common thread with the others?

Answer: Brewer and Shipley

Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Richie Furay, and Jim Messina were founding members of Buffalo Springfield.
4. Three of these bands share a common member...which one does not?

Answer: Power Station

Vocalist Paul Rodgers has been the front man for Free, Bad Company, and Queen [filling in for the late Freddie Mercury on Queen's 2005 tour]. In addition to his stellar solo career, the late Robert Palmer was also the lead vocalist for Power Station.
5. All four of these bands have tasted tragedy in their ranks but three of them have a little more in common. What band had additional sorrow when a guitarist passed away?

Answer: The Rolling Stones

Styx [John Panozza], Led Zeppelin [John Bonham], Rolling Stones (Charlie Watt) and The Who [Keith Moon] all saw their original drummers pass away. The Rolling Stones additionally lost founding member/guitarist Brian Jones.
6. There are members in three of these bands that share a relative bond. Which band does not have the same traits as the others?

Answer: The Doobie Brothers

Unlike Oasis [Noel and Liam Gallagher], Marshall Tucker [the late Tommy and late Toy Caldwell], and The Beach Boys [the late Carl, the late Dennis, and Brian Wilson], there are no true siblings in The Doobie Brothers.
7. Which one of these colorfully named bands is lacking a common thread in its membership that is shared by the others?

Answer: The Moody Blues

Members of Deep Purple have also been members of these three bands: vocalist David Coverdale [Whitesnake], lead guitarist Richie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, and vocalist Joe Lynn Turner [Rainbow], and lead vocalist Ian Gillen [Black Sabbath].
8. Three of these bands share a common member: which one does not?

Answer: The Spencer Davis Group

These bands have all been stops along the way in the long, strange trip of the legendary guitarist/singer/songwriter Eric Clapton.
9. These four recording artists all have a musical link but three of them have a bond that the fourth can never share...who's the "odd band out"?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band

Patti Smith ["Because The Night"], Manfred Mann ["Blinded By The Light], and The Pointer Sisters ["Fire"] all had bigger hits with their covers of Springsteen's songs than "The Boss" had with his original recordings of the same songs.
10. Three of these bands share Latino heritage in their membership: which band does not?

Answer: Poco

Poco [Spanish for "little"] originally was called "Pogo", after a newspaper comic character created by Walt Kelly. Kelly threatened to sue the band over the use of the name so the "g" became "c" and a 30-plus year career followed. Los Lonely Boys ["Heaven"] is the three Garza brothers of San Angelo, Tx. Los Lobos, from East Los Angeles, California, has been the standard-bearer of Spanish-roots rock and roll and derivate music for over 25 years. Los Bravos [Spain] was one of the first Latino rock and roll bands to cross over to mainstream radio with their hit single "Black Is Black" [1966].
