Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paul McCartney and Wings did a song about a woman who was quite a driver. Will the picture help you with the song I'm thinking of?

Answer: Helen Wheels

Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda, formed the band Wings in 1971 after the Beatles broke up. "Helen Wheels" was released as a single in 1973.
2. Ray Charles' woman had a message for him; how did she put it?

Answer: Hit the Road, Jack

Poor Ray, and it looks like a lonely road, too. But he must have cried all the way to the bank because it was a number one record for him in 1961.
3. Who doesn't Bob Dylan want to work for anymore?

Answer: Maggie

The singer in "Maggie's Farm" didn't get along with Maggie or her family and kept threatening to leave. The song was on Dylan's 1965 album "Bringing It All Back Home" and was also released as a single.
4. It looks like it's time to get up. Which Joni Mitchell song might this picture remind you of?

Answer: Chelsea Morning

Joni Mitchell wrote "Chelsea Morning"; it was on her second album, "Clouds", in 1969. Dave van Ronk, Judy Collins and Fairport Convention had previously recorded it.

The careful observer knows that the picture is really of a Chelsea late afternoon.
5. Which Jimi Hendrix song might be alluded to here?

Answer: The Wind Cries Mary

Hendrix released "The Wind Cries Mary" in 1967. It reached number six on the "UK Singles Chart"; it was the B-side of "Purple Haze" in the U.S., which got all the attention.
6. Many artists have recorded this song. Will this picture lead you to its name?

Answer: Cotton-Eyed Joe

As a song that has been around since before 1860, "Cotton-Eyed Joe" (or "Cotton Eye Joe") has many versions. It was likely a Negro folk song. Well-known to American country music musicians, it has also been recorded by the Chieftains from Ireland and the Swedish band Rednex.
7. Who was Wilson Pickett's exasperating girlfriend?

Answer: Mustang Sally

In the song, the singer bought Sally a 1965 Mustang but she wouldn't let him ride in it. Wilson Pickett didn't have the original version but his was the most popular when released in 1966.

The wild mustang is not Nevada's state animal (the bighorn sheep is) but about half of the wild horses in the U.S. are in Nevada; Nevada schoolchildren wanted them on the state quarter. There are a lot of Mustang automobiles in Nevada, too.
8. Who might have been the engineer of a train like this?

Answer: Casey Jones

"The switcher knew by the whistle's moan that the man at the throttle was Casey Jones". The song was about John "Casey" Jones, a real railroad engineer on the Illinois Central Railroad. While attempting to make up lost time on a run near Vaughn, Mississippi, in 1900 he was killed when his train ran into the back of one that was stopped.

It has been recorded by Johnny Cash, Pete Seeger and Burl Ives, among others; the Grateful Dead are the only ones to suggest drug abuse as the cause of the wreck.
9. What did Pete Townshend of The Who like to see?

Answer: Pictures of Lily

"Pictures of Lily" was written by Pete Townshend after seeing a 1920s postcard his girlfriend had pinned to a wall. It was a 1967 single which did not sell a lot of records so The Who only played it sporadically in concerts.
10. Whom did Paul Simon expect to meet here?

Answer: Julio

"Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" was a 1972 hit for Paul Simon. It was about three boys who broke a law, but we never found out what they did. It was a single and also included on Simon's self-titled 1972 album.
