Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Beatles track from the album, "Rubber Soul" (1965), contains the lyrics, "Sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble, Tres bien ensemble"?

Answer: Michelle

Michelle was a category four hurricane that struck Central America, Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas in October and November 2001, causing $2 billion worth of damage.
"Michelle", the song by the Beatles, remains one of their most popular tracks, but wasn't released as a single by the band apart from in Scandinavia and mainland Europe.
In Canada, David and Jonathan had a number one with the song in 1966, as well as a USA number three on the Billboard Hot 100; while in UK and Australia, it was the Overlanders who had a top three hit with the track on the Record Retailer and Kent Music charts respectively, also in 1966.
2. Three years before this hurricane made landfall in southern Belize, the Goo Goo Dolls had a UK top three hit with the same name. What was the song called?

Answer: Iris

The Goo Goo Dolls didn't just chart highly in UK, as "Iris" also hit the top ten in Netherlands and USA, on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as Canada and Australia where it peaked at number one.

Apart from Belize, hurricane Iris also caused widespread damage in Jamaica, Guatemala and Mexico, along with being responsible for 31 deaths.
3. Originally recorded in 1933 by Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter, who have artists such as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Ry Cooder also said "Goodnight" to?

Answer: Irene

Hurricane Irene battered the east coasts of both Canada and USA in 2011, as well as the Caribbean and Bahamas, resulting in 58 deaths and damage costs totalling over $14 billion.

Leadbelly had been singing the song, "Goodnight, Irene" at performances since the early 20th century and stated he had learned it from his uncles, but it wasn't recorded until 1933, while he was imprisoned for attempted homicide.
Of the other versions, I must recommend Ry Cooder's brilliant Tex-Mex version from 1976.
4. In September 2010, which storm, found in the lyrics of "Monster Mash" (1962) by Bobby "Boris" Pickett, battered Newfoundland, Canada, washing out large sections of roads, including the Trans Canada Highway and isolating almost 150 communities?

Answer: Igor

As the worst tropical storm to hit Newfoundland since 1935, Hurricane Igor certainly was a monster, causing a record CDN$200 million worth of damage and requiring the deployment of the military to assist in aid distribution and recovery work.

Pickett's novelty hit of 1962 contains the lyrics, "The scene was rockin', all were digging the sounds, Igor on chains, backed by his baying hounds", and while Dracula is mentioned in the song, there has not, up to 2019, been a hurricane named Dracula.
5. John Travolta, as Danny Zuko, reached number two in UK charts with this 1978 track, which was about his girlfriend, not about the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. If you know the name, then "You're the One That I Want".

Answer: Sandy

"Sandy" was from the huge smash movie, "Grease" (1978), based on the 1971 stage musical of the same name. "Sandy" was written especially for the movie, taking the place of a song entitled "Alone at a Drive-In Movie" from the original show.

Hurricane Sandy caused incredible devastation as it swept across Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Bahamas and Bermuda as well as USA and Canada, killing a total of 234 people.
6. According to the lyrics of the song from "West Side Story" (1957), this is "The most beautiful sound I ever heard", but perhaps not to residents of Puerto Rico, where, in 2017, this was the deadliest hurricane since 1899. Do you know the name?

Answer: Maria

"West Side Story", which is based on Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" (1597) first hit the stage on Broadway in 1957, before being made into a film in 1961, starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer. The song, "Maria" is sung by Beymer's character, Tony, who is the star-crossed lover of Maria, played by Wood.

In total, Maria killed 3,059 people, of which 2,975 were in Puerto Rico. As well as being the deadliest in the country since 1899, it was, with 65 fatalities, the deadliest in Dominica since 1834.
7. In 2016, hurricane Matthew became the worst disaster to affect Haiti since the earthquake of 2010. Thankfully it wasn't followed by a mini Matthew, but which singer-songwriter had a UK chart number two hit in 1967 with "Matthew and Son"?

Answer: Cat Stevens

Amazingly, considering the large body of work that he has recorded both under the names Cat Stevens and Yusuf Islam, "Matthew and Son" (1967) is his highest charting solo UK single. A point of interest regarding the song, is that it features a young session musician on bass, called John Paul Jones, and was recorded just months before Jones and some friends formed a little band called Led Zeppelin.

With recovery and repairs still ongoing following the 2010 earthquake, this hurricane with 165 mph (270 kmh) winds and life threatening rainfall warnings of 25 inches (64 cm) was not what Haiti needed. A death toll of 546 was the cost, but it could have been much worse, as 2.1 million people were affected by the storm and approximately 175,000 people were left homeless.
8. Which African-American spiritual was first heard by abolitionists on St. Helena Island in South Carolina? It shares its name with the hurricane, that in 2018 became the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the contiguous United States since 1992.

Answer: Michael, Row The Boat Ashore

"Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" is probably one of the best known spiritual songs, due in part to it being recorded by artists such as Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, The Beach Boys and The Highwaymen, who reached number one in UK with their 1961 version of the song.

Hurricane Michael made landfall on the Florida panhandle, between Mexico Beach and Tyndall Air Force Base on October 10th 2018, with peak wind speeds of 160 mph (260 kmh). The hurricane caused huge amounts of damage, at a cost of $25.1 billion, including a $6 billion cost for replacing several F-22 fighter planes that were damaged at the air force base.
9. Although it was a weak category one hurricane, this 2005 storm which shares its name with an Eminem track featuring Dido, still left behind over 1,600 fatalities. Do you remember its name?

Answer: Stan

Hurricane Stan disrupted petroleum exports across Central America and decimated the region's coffee crop. Hardest hit was Guatemala where the majority of deaths occurred due to mudslides triggered by the torrential rain.

"Stan" from 2000, was Eminem's second UK number one single, after "The Real Slim Shady" (2000) but didn't fare as well in USA, where it only reached number 51 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track uses a remix of the Dido hit, "Thank You" (1998), and was performed at the 2001 Grammy's with Sir Elton John singing the parts originally sung by Dido.
10. Although this was the name of a lovely meter maid in a Beatles song, there was nothing lovely about the hurricane of the same name as it made landfall in Johnson's Bayou, Louisiana in 2005, just three weeks after hurricane Katrina had devastated the area. What was the name of this unwanted visitor?

Answer: Rita

The fear felt after the destruction of Katrina caused up to 3.7 million people to leave the Gulf Coast prior to Rita's landfall, making it the largest evacuation in USA. Across the states of Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, Rita was responsible for 120 deaths, a figure that could have been much higher if not for this mass evacuation.

"Lovely Rita" is a track from the Beatles' 1967 album, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and is about a UK traffic warden, but McCartney used the American terminology as he thought that meter maid sounded sexier.
