Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan were the original bass player and drummer for which London-based rock band formed in the late 1960s?

Answer: Status Quo

The two guitarists who have fronted Status Quo since 1967, and are still going strong, are Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt. Along with Coghlan and Lancaster this was the classic line-up.
John Coghlan left in 1981 and was replaced as stickman by Pete Kircher (1982-85), Jeff Rich (1986-2000), Matt Letley (2000-13) and Leon Cave (2013- ). John "Rhino" Edwards replaced Alan Lancaster on bass in 1985.
Quo began as a five-piece, with Roy Lynes on keyboards until 1970, and they returned to that format when Andy Brown joined in 1976.
2. Paul Rutherford (keyboards), Peter Gill (drums), Mark O'Toole (bass) and Brian Nash (guitar) were all members of which band formed in Liverpool in 1980?

Answer: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

Fronted by vocalist Holly Johnson, Frankie Goes to Hollywood became only the second artist in UK chart history to top the charts with their first three singles. The other band who had managed this was another Liverpool outfit -- not The Beatles, though, as you might think, but Gerry and the Pacemakers. This record stood until the Spice Girls debuted with six number one singles in 1996-97.
FGTH's debut single, "Relax", topped the UK singles chart in 1983 despite being banned by the BBC. It also reached number ten in the Billboard 100 chart in the U.S. Their debut album, "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" released in 1984, topped the UK album chart and spawned two more UK number one singles, "Two Tribes" and "The Power of Love".
FGTH produced only one more album, "Liverpool" released in 1986, before breaking up in 1987.
The alternatives are three more English bands formed in 1980, Depeche Mode were from Essex, Level 42 from the Isle of Wight, and Heaven 17 from Sheffield.
3. Drummer Joey Kramer and bass player Tom Hamilton have been members of which rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970? Rhythm guitarist Brad Whitford joined in 1971 to make the group a five-piece.

Answer: Aerosmith

The most famous members of Aerosmith are vocalist Steven "The Demon of Screamin'" Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry. Both Perry and Whitford had brief periods away from the band in the early 1980s, but other than that they have played as the same quintet for more than 40 years.
Aerosmith's self-titled debut album reached number 21 in the US chart in 1973. They broke into the Top Five with their fourth studio album, "Rocks" released in 1976, and finally topped the chart in 1993 with their eleventh attempt, "Get a Grip", which also reached number two in the UK album chart. Their next album, "Nine Lives" in 1997, also topped the US chart.
It took them even longer to find success with a single. Twenty-five years after releasing their first single, Aerosmith scored their first Billboard 100 number one (and their first UK Top Five single) with "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" in 1998.
The alternatives are three more American bands: the Doobie Brothers are from San Jose CA and were also formed in 1970, Crazy Horse were a Los Angeles band formed in 1969, and ZZ Top were from Houston TX, also formed in 1969.
4. Vinny Appice, Bev Bevan, Eric Singer, Terry Chimes, Cozy Powell, Bobby Rondineli and Mike Bordin all had spells as the drummer for which English rock band in the 1980s and 1990s?

Answer: Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath are, of course, best known for inflicting the crazy genius that is Ozzy Osbourne on the world. They also feature the outstanding guitarist Tony Iommi and the bass of Geezer Butler. From their formation in 1968 until 1980 and again since 1997, Bill Ward has performed the percussion duties, but they featured numerous drummers in those intervening years. Bev Bevan was the drummer for Electric Light Orchestra throughout that band's existence (1970-86).

He joined Sabbath in 1983 and was one of the drummers on the 1987 album "The Eternal Idol". Cozy Powell has played with numerous bands (including Whitesnake) in a long career with the sticks.

He played with Sabbath from 1988-91 and again from 1994-95, appearing on three albums, "Headless Cross" (1989), "TYR" (1990) and "Forbidden" (1995). Vinny Appice has had four spells at the back of the Sabbath stage and was the drummer on two albums, "Mob Rules" in 1981 and "Dehumanizer" in 1992. Eric Singer is probably best known for his three spells as the drummer for Kiss, but he was with Sabbath from 1985-87, playing on two albums, "Seventh Star" in 1986 and on some tracks on "The Eternal Idol" in 1987.
5. Bass player John Deacon joined which London-based rock band in 1971 to give them the line-up everyone knows and loves?

Answer: Queen

Founded in 1970 with vocalist Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, Queen added John Deacon on bass a year later and remained unchanged until the death of Mercury in 1991.
6. This rock band produced seven studio albums (including two number ones) and more than 20 singles (seven of which reached the Top Five). Only together for five years, which rock band's constant line-up was fronted by two brothers with Doug Clifford on drums and Stu Cook on bass and keyboards?

Answer: Creedence Clearwater Revival

Founded in El Cerrito, California in 1967, Creedence Clearwater Revival had brothers John Fogerty on vocals and lead guitar and Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar in addition to Cook and Clifford.
They released their eponymous debut album in 1968 and topped the US album chart the following year with their third studio album, "Green River". Their fifth album, "Cosmo's Factory", topped the same chart a year later. On the singles front, they never did top the Billboard 100 chart, although "Proud Mary", "Bad Moon Rising" and "Green River" all reached number two in 1969, as did "Lookin' Out My Back Door" in 1970. "Bad Moon Rising" did, however, top the UK singles chart.
Of the alternatives, The Kinks featured Ray and Dave Davies with Mick Avory on drums for more than 20 of the band's 32-year existence (from 1964-96). American rock band Van Halen had brothers Eddie van Halen on guitar and brother Alex on drums, with the line-up rounded out by David Lee Roth (vocals) and Michael Anthony (bass) from 1975 until 1985. Sammy Hagar then replaced Roth from 1985-95. Manchester-based Oasis lasted from 1991 until 2009 with brothers Liam (vocals) and Noel (guitar) Gallagher fronting the band. Original bassist Paul McGuigan was replaced by Andy Bell in 1999 and drummer Tony McCarroll was replaced by Alan White (not to be confused with the 'Yes' drummer of the same name) in 1995. Ringo Starr's son, Zack Starkey, then replaced White in 2004.
7. Greg Lake, Gordon Haskell, Boz Burrell and John Wetton all played bass guitar with which rock group in the 1970s?

Answer: King Crimson

Guitarist Robert Fripp is the one constant member of King Crimson throughout all of their numerous incarnations.
Greg Lake, who later formed Emerson Lake & Palmer and played with supergroup Asia, was King Crimson's original bassist and vocalist, from 1968-70. Gordon Haskell took over that dual role in 1970 and was then himself succeeded by Boz Burrell. Burrell left in 1972 to form Bad Company and Crimson were joined by former-Family bassist John Wetton who would later go on to play with Roxy Music, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash and Asia.
King Crimson disbanded in 1974 but reformed around Fripp and drummer Bill Bruford in 1981. Still going more than 45 years after they began, they are now on something like their eighth transformation.
8. Which rock band has retained the same four-man line-up since they were founded in 1976, which Adam Clayton playing bass and Larry Mullen Jr on drums?

Answer: U2

The line-up for Dublin-based Irish rock band U2 has been vocalist Bono (real name Paul David Hewson) and guitarist The Edge (real name David Howell Evans) along with Clayton and Mullen since their formation in 1976.
Of the alternatives, The Police are another group from the same era (formed in 1977) who have also retained a stable line-up for more than 40 years. For Foreigner, Mick Jones is now the only remaining member of the original 1976 line-up, vocalist Lou Grammm having departed in 2003. Similarly, Boston only have one member remaining from the original 1976 line-up, Tom Scholz.
9. Which band formed in 1969 were one of the first supergroups, with former Spooky Tooth bassist Greg Ridley and teenage-sensation Jerry Shirley on drums?

Answer: Humble Pie

The other two members of Humble Pie when they formed in 1969 were a pair of vocalist/guitarists, former Small Faces frontman Steve Marrioty and Peter Frampton, formerly with The Herd. Long before becoming a rock star, Steve Marriott had been a member of the cast of "Oliver!" on the London stage, and he sang the part of the Artful Dodger on the hit 1960 album. Humble Pie's debut release, "Natural Born Bugie", reached number four in the UK singles chart. Former Colosseum guitarist Dave "Clem" Clemson replaced Frampton in 1971.

Although there would be future incarnations and reunions, Humble Pie effectively disbanded in 1975 with Ridley and Clemson joining drummer Cozy Powell to form Special Brew. Ridley later rejoined his former band-mate to form The Steve Marriott Band.
10. Which English band formed in 1981 still are still going with the same four-man line-up including drummer Jon Moss, bass player Micky Craig and guitarist Roy Hay?

Answer: Culture Club

The best-known member of Culture Club is vocalist Boy George (real name George Alan O'Dowd). Although the band have been together for a quarter of a century, they are only just now working on their sixth studio album, "Tribes". Culture Club's second album, "Colour by Numbers" reached number one in the UK and number two in the US. On the singles front, they were huge in the early 1980s: in 1982, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" topped the singles chart in nine countries, although it reached only number two in the US.

The following year, "Karma Chameleon" did even better, topping ten charts including those on both sides of the Atlantic.
