Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This new wave synthpop band founded in 1980 released their most successful album, "The Luxury Gap", in 1983. Other albums include "Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho" and "Penthouse and Pavement". " "Let Me Go!" was their only US Main chart single, whereas both "Temptation" and "Come Live with Me" reached the Top 5 in the UK singles chart. Who is this group?

Answer: Heaven 17

Formed in Sheffield in northern England, Heaven 17 consisted of vocalist Glenn Gregory and two former keyboard players from The Human League, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh.

"Penthouse and Pavement" was the debut album from Heaven 17. "Luxury Gap", their second release, reached number four in the UK album chart and number 72 in the UK, the band's highest position in either chart. "Temptation", a single released from that album, made it to number two in the UK chart in 1983, and got to number five when it was remixed almost a decade later.
2. Founded in 1981, this group released their debut album, "Kill 'Em All" two years later. In three decades together they have produced only nine studio albums, with "Death Magnetic" released in 2008. Their most-successful U.S. single reached number ten in the Billboard 100 chart in 1996. "St. Anger", in 2003, was their fourth Top 10 single in the UK. Which group is this?

Answer: Metallica

Metallica began in Los Angeles in 1981 with vocalist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. Guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist Ron McGovney joined soon thereafter, although both were replaced in 1983. Kirk Hammett was installed as the group's permanent guitarist by the time their debut album, "Kill 'Em All", was relased in 1983. Cliff Burton took over from McGovney on bass at the same time, although he was subsequently replaced by Jason Newsted in 1986 and by Robert Trujillo in 2003.

"...And Justice for All" (hence the picture clue) gave Metallica their first Top 10 single on both sides of the Atlantic in 1988 before a series of dual number one albums began with their eponymous release in 1991. A great live band, "S & M", recorded in 1999 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, reached number two in the US.
3. Founded in 1982, their albums include "The Queen Is Dead" and "Meat is Murder". Despite 24 UK charting singles released over a twelve year period, only one, "This Charming Man" in 1992, made it higher than number ten in the UK. Which group is this?

Answer: The Smiths

Founded in Manchester in 1982, The Smiths were essentially a vehicle for frontman Morrissey (full name Steven Patrick Morrissey). The other band members were guitarist Johnny Marr, bass player Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce. Craig Gannon joined in 1986 as the group's second guitarist.

The Smiths topped the UK album chart twice: with their second studio album, "Meat Is Murder", in 1985 and with their "Best ....1" compilation in 1992. Their only live album, "Rank", stalled at number two, as did their eponymous debut album and their final album "Strangeways, Here We Come" (hence the picture clue of HMP Manchester).

It seems strange that it was not until 1992, with a single released from their "Best ... 1" album, that the Smith's broke through into the single figures in the UK singles chart. Perhaps their best-known single (which reached number ten in 1984) was "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" -- was this Morrissey's attempt at irony, echoing that feeling of deep depression that most people get from listening to The Smiths.
4. Founded in 1983, they released their first studio album, "This Is the Story", in 1987. Two albums, "Sunshine on Leith" and "Hit the Highway", made it into the UK top 10. "Letter from America", reached number three in the UK singles chart and their cover of Roger Miller's "King of the Road" was a Top 10 hit in 1990. Their first number one came via a 2007 charity remix. Which group is this?

Answer: The Proclaimers

Founded in the north Edinburgh suburb of Leith, The Proclaimers are essentially twin bothers, vocalists Charlie and Craig Reid.

Two of the group's early studio albums made it into the Top 10 in the UK chart, but their highest playing (number five) came with their "Best of The Proclaimers" compilation in 2002.

The Proclaimers had only two top 10 singles in the UK during their twelve active years, but they did manage to top the chart in 2007 with the release of a "Comic Relief" version of their signature song, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", featuring comedians Matt Lucas and Peter Kay. First time around, in 1988, the single had reached only number eleven in the UK, although it had topped the singles charts in both Australia and New Zealand.

Can you imagine backstage at a Proclaimers' gig, the band members kids dragged along and listening for the umpteenth time... after the first rousing chorus you hear a tiny voice asking "Are We There Yet?"
5. Founded in Manchester in 1984, this band reached number two with their debut album, "Picture Book". A run of five consecutive UK number one albums began in 1989 with an album to which the photo is a clue and ending with "Blue" in 1998. Top 20 singles include "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)", "The Right Thing" and "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye". Which group is this?

Answer: Simply Red

Mancunian singer/songwriter Mick Hucknall was the driving force behind Simply Red, a soul/pop band that have sold more than 50 million albums since their debut release in 1985. Their run of UK number one albums began in 1989 with "A New Flame" and continued with "Stars", "Life", a "Greatest Hits" compilation and "Blue". The band's eleventh studio album, "Big Love", released in 2015, more than three decades after they began, confirmed the longevity of their popularity by climbing to number four in the UK album chart.

Although Simply Red never had a massive impact on the album chart in the US, their singles did better there than they did at home. Both the 1985 re-issue of "Holding Back the Years" and the group's 1989 anthem, "If You Don't Know Me by Now", both reached the top spot in the US Billboard 100 chart whilst stalling at number two in the UK.
6. Formed in 1985, whilst they enjoyed immediate success at home it was not until their third studio album, "Woodface" in 1991, that this rock band broke into the Top 10 in the UK album chart. "Together Alone" in 1993 and "Time on Earth" in 2007 were further UK top 10 releases. "Weather with You" (1992) is their only UK Top 10 single, although both "Don't Dream It's Over" made it to number two in the US in 1986. Which group is this?

Answer: Crowded House

Founded as The Mullanes in Melbourne, Australia in 1985, but soon changed their name to Crowded House. The original band members were vocalist/guitarist/keyboard player Neil Finn, bassist Nick Seymour and drummer Paul Hester. Hester, who died in 2005, left in 1995, but the other two original members are still recording and touring with the group.

All six of their studio albums, starting with a 1986 eponymous release, have charted well in Crowded House's home country, with four of the six topping the Australian chart and the other two reaching number two.

"Don't Dream It's Over", from their debut album, reached number two in the US and topped the singles charts in both New Zealand and Canada. "Better Be Home Soon", in 1988, was their best-performing chart single in Australia, climbing to number two.
7. Formed in 1986, this punk band did not release their first album, "39/Smooth", until 1990. Their first two major chart successes, "Dookie" and "Insomniac" both reached number two in the US album chart. Early successful chart singles include "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around". Which group is this?

Answer: Green Day

Vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bass player Mike Dirnt formed Green Day in California in 1986. After a slow start, they had two albums that climbed to number two before hitting the top of both the US and UK album charts with "American Idol" in 2004. "21st Century Breakdown" again topped both charts in 2009.

"American Idol" also produces their first mainstream singles chart success. The title track reached number three in the UK and then "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" made it to number two in the US Billboard 100.
8. Although formed in 1987, this rock band took three years to produce their debut album, "Facelift". Their only US number one album was an eponymous release in 1995. Their fifth studio album, "The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here", released in 2013, reached number two in the US. Charting singles include "Rooster", "Grind" and "Get Born Again". Which group is this?

Answer: Alice in Chains

Formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987, the original line-up of Alice in Chians was songwriter/guitarist Jerry Cantrell, vocalist Layne Staley, drummer Sean Kinney and bass player Mike Starr.

In more than three decades together Alice in Chains have produced only five studio albums, with all but their first climbing into the Top 10 in the US chart. On the singles front, they had some success in the US Main chart but had to wait until 2009 for a number one, and then two came along together: both "Check My Brain" and "Your Decision" from the "Black Gives Way to Blue" album topped the chart.
9. Founded in 1988, this Canadian rock band's first album, "Gordon", topped the chart in their home nation. "Stunt", released in 1998 was their best-performing album in both the US and UK (reaching numbers three and twenty respectively). Early singles "Enid" and "Jane" were Top 5 performers in Canada, but it was "One Week", in 1998 that gave them their only US number one and UK Top 5 single. Which group is this?

Answer: Barenaked Ladies

Founded in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, the original line-up of Barenaked Ladies consisted of a pair of vocalist/guitarists, Ed Robertson and Steven Page. Brothers Andy (drums) and Jim (bass) Creeggan joined in 1990.

Between "Gordon" in 1992 and "Silverball" in 2015, BNL have produced eleven studio albums, eight of which (plus the 2001 "Disc One: All Their Greatest Hits" compilation) have been Top 10 hits in Canada. Four have also reached the Top 10 in the US.

BNL had to wait until 1998 for their first major success with a single, when "One Week" topped the US Billboard 100 chart and reached number five in the UK. In that same year, "It's All Been Done", also from the "Stunt" album, gave the group their first Canadian number one single.

Oh, just in case you are wondering about the picture clue: that is a statue of the Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens who, as I'm sure you know, is best known for his paintings of... bare, naked ladies.
10. Formed in Texas in 1989, they have produced a mere seven studio albums in 25+ years together. The fourth, "Wide Open Spaces" (in 1998) gave them their first US chart album, reaching number four. Their last three albums have all topped the US chart and "Taking the Long Way" (in 2006) broke into the Top 10 in the UK. "Long Time Gone", "Landslide" and "Not Ready to Make Nice" have all made the Top 10 of the US Billboard 100 singles chart. Which group is this?

Answer: Dixie Chicks

The Dixie Chicks are a crossover country/pop group formed in Dallas TX in 1989. The line-up features lead vocalist Natalie Maines and sisters Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison.

The Dixie Chicks' first three albums failed to register in the charts, but "Wide Open Spaces" topped the US Country chart and reached number four in the US mainstream chart in 1998. Since then, "Fly" (1999), "Home" (2002) and "Taking the Long Way" (2006) have all topped both charts. The latter album also led the domination of the 2007 Grammy Awards, earning the band five awards including Best Album. Sales of more than 30 million copies of the album also made them both the best-selling all-female band and country group since the current system of ratings was introduced in 1991.

Although the Dixie Chicks are from Texas, the picture clue shows the great seal of Alabama, a state which is nicknamed "The Heart of Dixie".
