Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Taken from the band's 1995 album, "Hi Fi Way", what colour are the sneakers they sing about?

Answer: Purple

Although the track "Purple Sneakers" was not a hit single, it is always a favourite at live shows. The B side of the single featured a cover of "We're Desperate", originally done by Californian punk band X on their "Wild Gift" (1981) album.
2. Which was the track that the band released in 1994, to explain the reasons for founding member Jaimme Rogers leaving?

Answer: Jaimme's Got A Gal

An obvious title parody of the Aerosmith track, "Janie's Got A Gun", this track was taken from the band's debut album, "Sound As Ever" . The single was backed with a cover of "I'm So Tired", originally by The Beatles on their eponymous 1968 album, better known as "The White Album".
3. What is the name of the side project of You Am I guitarist Davey Lane, who achieved Australian chart success of their own in 2005 with "I Don't Care"?

Answer: The Pictures

Lane formed The Pictures in 2000 with Luke Thomas and they released their debut album, "Pieces Of Eight" in 2005, from which this track was taken. They had little commercial success and called it a day in 2013, but are fondly remembered for their pop punk cover of "Milkshake" (2005), originally by rap artist Kelis in 2003.
4. You Am I performed their first international tour in 1994, when they travelled to USA to appear as support act to which of Chris Cornell's bands?

Answer: Soundgarden

For a band who were at the time unheard of outside Australia and only had one album under their belt, this was a huge deal, but illustrated the amount of promise and raw talent the band were displaying. Also on this tour of USA and Canada was psychobilly band Reverend Horton Heat. You Am I also supported Soundgarden during their Australia and New Zealand tour of 1997.
5. In 2017, Australian radio station Double J ran a poll to find the best Australian song of the 90s. Which track by You Am I was the winner?

Answer: Berlin Chair

The song was also voted best Australian song of the 90s in a 1999 phone poll, which, considering it only reached number 73 in the charts when it was released in 1994, is quite surprising. It is from the 1993 debut album "Sound As Ever" and the single also featured a cover of The Who track "Can't Explain."
6. You Am I have supported quite a few big names on the Australian leg of their respective tours. In 2004 they supported which band, who were playing their first Australian gigs since 1968?

Answer: The Who

The band have also been support act to the Rolling Stones on their 2003 "Licks" tour and Oasis on their "Be Here Now" tour of 1998, as well as supporting homegrown acts such as Jimmy Barnes, Cold Chisel and Hunters & Collectors. They also supported Lemonheads on their extensive UK tour of 1997 and opened for Metallica on their 1996 North American tour.
7. Also on the "Hi Fi Way" (1995) album was a track that gave the band their first Australian Top 40 hit. Which song was this, with the same title as an Everly Brothers hit from 1960?

Answer: Cathy's Clown

Although the song shared the title with the Everly Brothers' number one record from 1960, it was an original song by the band and nothing to do with its namesake. It reached an Australian Top 40 high of number 36.
8. In 1998, You Am I became the first Australian band ever to have three consecutive number one albums on the Australian charts. What was the title of the album that gave them this place in history?

Answer: #4 Record

Not surprisingly. "#4 Record" was the band's fourth album and followed the successful path laid down by previous albums "Hi Fi Way" (1995) and "Hourly, Daily" (1996). It was described by enthusiastic critics as close to an amalgam of the "holy trinity of the Stones, the Kinks and the Faces." The album contained tracks such as "Heavy Heart" and "Junk" which seem to appear on every playlist I ever make.
9. You Am I undertook a mini tour in 2018, paying homage to which seminal 80s UK rock band?

Answer: Spinal Tap

Yep, the boys played several dates in their homeland where they played a full set of Spinal Tap songs. The idea came about after they had been asked by interviewers so many times during their 30 year career, "whether they had ever had a Spinal Tap moment?" and decided to have one big Spinal Tap moment.

The gigs featured the band's logo stylised in Tap font, the band in costume and above all, pure unadulterated fun. No drummers are reported to have exploded on the tour however. Behold the majesty of the Tap!
10. Who is the driving force, vocalist, guitarist, songwriter and for many, the face of You Am I?

Answer: Tim Rogers

Rogers is an extremely talented musician with the swagger of a born showman, unfortunately not well known outside Australia. He has released solo albums which have sold well in Australia as well as recording with side projects Twin Set, The Temperance Union and Bamboo, covering a range of music from country and folk, through to soul and funk, with pop and punk thrown in as well.
