Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This man served as the last emperor of France and was forced to abdicate after France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Who was he?

Answer: Napoleon III

Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte (Napoleon III) was the nephew of Napoleon I (1804-1814, 1815). He first came to power in 1848 during the Second Republic when he was elected President of France with an impressive 74% of the vote. He was actually the first popularly elected President in the history of France.

However, the French Constitution did not allow the President to serve for a second term, so in 1851 he staged a coup d'état and proclaimed himself emperor. After his abdication, he went into exile and died in 1873.
2. He was a toddler when he became the Emperor of China in 1908 and was still a child when he was forced to abdicate. Who was he?

Answer: Puyi

Puyi (1908-1912, 1917) became emperor two months before his third birthday. He was later installed as the leader of the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo during World War II. The 1987 film "The Last Emperor" was based on Puyi's life.
3. Amha Selassie, son of the more famous Haile Selassie, was the last monarch of an African nation. Which one?

Answer: Ethiopia

Amha Selassie was declared Emperor of Ethiopia in 1974 after his father Haile Selassie was deposed. Amha Selassie never accepted this declaration which became a moot point after the Ethiopian monarchy was abolished in 1975. Amha Selassie died in exile in the United States in 1997.
4. Known as the "May King" this last king of Italy reigned for little more than a month before a vote abolished the Italian monarchy. Who was he?

Answer: Umberto II

Umberto's father, Victor Emmanuel III, served as King of Italy from 1900 to 1946. In the wake of Italy's defeat in World War II, Victor Emmanuel III abdicated in favor of his son. Umberto II was more popular than his father at the time and it is speculated that if the abdication had occurred earlier, the vote might have gone the other way.
5. This last emperor of Brazil was very popular at the time of his ouster in 1889 by a group of military officers. In fact, those officers themselves eventually wanted him to return to power. Who was he?

Answer: Dom Pedro II

He was personally popular with many of the people of Portugal but not looked on favorably by republican groups in the nation. He moved to Britain where he died in exile in 1932.
7. This last monarch of Hawaii only reigned for two years but also composed the song "Aloha 'Oe". Who was this ruler?

Answer: Liliuokalani

Queen Liliuokalani ruled Hawaii from 1891 to 1893. She was the sister of the previous King, David Kalahaua. Her song "Aloha 'Oe" is about two lovers bidding each other farewell.

She was succeeded by a distant cousin, George, Elector of Hanover.
