Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The sadness will last forever" were reputedly the last words of which Dutch artist after fatally shooting himself in 1890?

Answer: Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh passed away some 29 hours after he reportedly shot himself. The bullet had been deflected by a rib, caused little or no damage to internal organs and lodged against his spine. He was treated by two physicians but there was no surgeon in the village so the bullet was not removed.

This allowed infection to set in from which the artist failed to recover.

6. Which English playwright is famous for leaving his wife "his second best bed" in his will?

Answer: William Shakespeare

Shakespeare's will is one of the few documents that survive that gives us information about him, and it raises more questions than it answers. The only specific bequest to his wife is his "second best bed," which some have taken as meaning there was not much love lost between the playwright and his wife.

Others interpret this as a bit of touching sentimentality, as this was the bed in which they probably spent their wedding night. Shakespeare also makes no mention of books or manuscripts in his will, although other household objects are addressed in great detail.

7. In 1861, the Kingdom of Sardinia came to an end, and its last king became the first king of unified Italy. Who was this gentleman?

Answer: Victor Emmanuel II

The eldest son of Charles Albert, King of Sardinia-Piedmont, Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy (1820-1878) succeeded his father in 1849, when the latter abdicated the throne after a humiliating defeat against the Austrians in the Battle of Novara, during the First Italian War of Independence. Together with his Prime Minister, Camillo Benso of Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II was a major player in the process of Italian unification (the "Risorgimento").

After Giuseppe Garibaldi's successful military campaign in Southern Italy caused the fall of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, on March 17, 1861 Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed King of Italy by the Parliament of the newly unified country, assembled in Turin (which was Italy's capital until 1865).

He presided over the final stages of Italy's unification, the Third War of Independence (1866) and the capture of Rome (1870), then spent the last years of his reign dealing with economic and cultural issues such as illiteracy and the problems experienced by the poorer regions of Southern Italy. Victor Emmanuel II died in 1878 at the age of 57; he is buried in Rome's Pantheon in a tomb that bears the inscription "Padre della Patria" (Father of the Nation). Franz Joseph I was the last emperor of Austria-Hungary, Louis Philippe I was king of France, and Frederick William IV king of Prussia.

Answer: Victoria

Queen Victoria was actually a very compassionate woman, and though much was kept from her, whenever she heard or saw an injustice, she did her best to alleviate it. In Balmoral, for example, where she spent a lot of time and witnessed poverty at first hand, she had schools established and cottages built for the poor, frequently visited the sick and purchased food and clothing for those in need.
