10. This queen of the Netherlands ruled her country for 58 years, until her abdication in 1948. What was her name?

Answer: Wilhelmina

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands (1880-1962) was the only child of King William III of the House of Orange-Nassau and his second wife, Emma of Waldeck and Pyrmont. As the king's three sons from his first marriage had all died in infancy, Wilhelmina became her father's heir; she became queen in 1890, at the age of 10, with her mother as regent.

In 1901 she married Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, a German duke; the couple had only one child, Juliana, who ascended to the throne in 1948, upon Wilhelmina's abdication. During the 58 years of her reign - the longest of any Dutch monarch - Wilhelmina led her country through some of the most turbulent times in recent history, including both World Wars.

When Germany invaded the Netherlands in 1940, the queen fled to Britain, and from there led the Dutch resistance against the Nazis. Sadly, after her return to the Netherlands at the end of WWII, Wilhelmina's health declined, which convinced her to abdicate in favour of Juliana.

The former queen spent her remaining years at the palace of Het Loo in Apeldoorn, where she died in 1962, at the age of 82.

A bronze equestrian statue of Queen Wilhelmina stands on Rokin street in Amsterdam; a state park in Arkansas (US) is named after her. Sophie was the name of William III's first wife; Beatrix, Juliana's eldest daughter and Wilhelmina's granddaughter, abdicated in 2013 in favour of her son, Willem-Alexander.
