Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's say you want to become a farmer. You buy your cows and goats and various other livestock. Why should you never let your cows eat stinkweed?

Answer: The milk will be bitter

Stinkweed grows mainly in North America. The plant tends to have an unpleasant odour, which is rather distasteful, to say the least.
2. So now you want to be an astronomer. You set up your telescope and look out to the skies. How do you judge the amount of heat emitted by a star?

Answer: Its colour.

A star's heat is always estimated and colour is always used to help in this estimation. Hot stars are primarily young and mostly of a bluish tint. Whilst cool stars, mainly older, are red.
A red star (e.g. Antares in the constellation Taurus) will be the cooler star compared to our sun, which is yellow and has a surface temperature of about 6000 degree Celsius. A hotter one is a white star (e.g. Altair) and the hottest are blue stars, like Sirius and Rigel, whose surface temperatures can be well over 30,000 degrees Celsius.

The twinkling or blinking effect by the stars is mainly because of dust particles blocking starlight in the atmosphere.
3. Ah! You want to be able to poke your fingers into someone's mouth? Let's make you a dentist this time. A child that comes in has an overbite. What IS an overbite?

Answer: A condition where the upper teeth overlap the lower ones significantly.

Orthodontic treatment for an overbite varies. If the teeth are otherwise normal, the overlapping teeth can be tipped back to their original or more "normal" position with orthodontic appliances, such as braces. For more serious overbites, growth modification may be used.
4. So, you like staring into others' eyes. Say you are an opthalmologist. What is LASIK surgery?

Answer: A surgery to correct near- or far-sightedness

LASIK is short form for Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. A laser is used to remove tissue from inside your cornea once the doctor cuts a flap in it. This surgery is performed with the patient wide awake and usually takes less than a minute for each eye. The procedure is painless and you can walk out of the room and go back home straight afterwards.
5. Okay. So you want to exercise your culinary skills. Now, Chef, in front of you is a dish of achiote seed. What is it commonly used for?

Answer: Food colouring.

Achiote is Spanish for Annato seed. It is virtually tasteless and is from a tropical American tree. The seeds are used to produce food colouring used for cheese, margarine, butter, etc.
It is also widely used in Latin America and the Caribbean cuisines as both a colouring agent and for flavoring.
The Central and South American Indians used the seeds to make body paint and lipstick. So the tree is aptly named the 'lipstick tree'.
6. Got enough fashion sense to be a fashion designer? So, what's the best backdrop for wearing coloured eyeshadow or vivid lips (for women, please)?

Answer: All black

The black contrasts with the makeup and thus really makes for a great outfit.
7. Ah. Trying to become the next J.R.R. Tolkien or the next J.K. Rowling? Before you pick up your pen, answer this simple question. What is a satire?

Answer: A parody.

A satire usually exaggerates and pokes fun at books, people, television shows, hobbies, and everything else you can imagine. It is pretty amusing to read if you have a sense of humor about you. It is quite entertaining to read a satire of your own work actually, but maybe not everyone shares this opinion. My bad.
8. Let's see what kind of an artist you make. An artist should be able to make use of what they have, or use cheaper alternatives. You want to practice and oil paint is expensive. So what do you do to make a normal painting look like an expensive oil painting?

Answer: Spread diluted PVA glue or wax over the finished piece.

Applying the PVA glue or wax over the painting and the crushing the canvas or paper when it's dry makes for a good imitation of an oil painting.
9. You want to make it as a food scientist? What is pentyl ethanoate?

Answer: A banana ester.

Esters are synthetic flavors and smells. A banana ester is made by mixing pentanol and ethanoic acid and boiled with concentrated sulfuric acid. Esters all have sweet smells and were rumoured to have been discovered when a scientist accidentally poured an alcohol into a carboxylic acid and discovered that it had a sweet smell, and that it didn't blow up in his face.
10. You want to swim with our underwater pals, and become a marine biologist. What kind of dolphins are found exclusively in China?

Answer: White dolphins

For the record, there are no such dolphins as Purple dolphins.

Chinese White Dolphins are actually pink in colour, but the Chinese and practically everyone else calls them 'white' dolphins. They are also called the Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins. They are usually found in Hong Kong but may also be found in small populations off the coast of China. There are only 80 to 120 left.
The Bottlenose dolphin's habitat, however, is mainly the northwest Atlantic whilst the Common Dolphins are found in all tropical and warm-temperate waters. Thus the name 'Common' Dolphin.
