Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which classic 19th century novel (author included) is David Balfour cheated out of his inheritance and forcibly sent to sea by his wicked uncle Ebenezer?

Answer: Kidnapped - Robert Louis Stevenson

The novel by this Scotsman was first published in 1886 and was much admired by contemporary authors. Considered "historical fiction," it touched on the 1745-46 Jacobite uprising in Scotland, and has characters based on real people. "A Christmas Carol" also has a famous Ebenezer, namely "Scrooge," the miserly hater of Christmas who transforms by story's end.
2. This 1960s American TV action series starred Robert Vaughan and David McCallum.

Answer: The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

The show ran on NBC from 1964-1968 and concerned the exploits of two suave secret agents who exchanged witty dialogue as they pursued bad guys and enemies of ....Uncle Sam? "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is a novel about the tribulations of a slave in the antebellum South in the U.S. The other answers are not real TV shows.
3. Which personification of the United States appeared on recruiting posters during the First World War, pointing and saying "I want YOU" for the U.S. Army?

Answer: Uncle Sam

First appearance of this beloved icon is obscure, but he was in use as early as the war of 1812 and may have been named after a patriotic meat packer from New York named Samuel Wilson, who stamped "US" on packages sent to the troops. This according to the website "xroads.virginia.edu" The "I Want You" poster, grandiosely called "the most famous poster in the world" by creator James Montgomery Flagg, was the cover for the July 6, 1916 issue of "Leslie's Weekly Magazine", designed to challenge American war preparedness. The US entered the war April 6, 1917.
4. Which of the following is a true "blood" uncle? (This does not include half-sisters or half-brothers).

Answer: The brother of my mother's sister

Grandfather's brother is a great uncle. Many consider spouses of uncles and aunts as uncles and aunts, but they're not blood relatives. The brother of my mother's sister is, of course, also the brother of my mother, hence my uncle.
5. Who is the uncle referenced in the Who's great rock opera "Tommy"? (Shares name with a character on Sesame Street).

Answer: Uncle Ernie

Tommy is the deaf, dumb and blind boy who gains a cult following after escaping uncle Ernie's clutches and becoming a pinball superstar.
6. Only one answer is NOT a translation of "uncle" into another language. Pick out the faulty translation.

Answer: Tante: Russian

"Tante" translates to "aunt" in French, German and Dutch.
7. Who is or was Uncle Remus?

Answer: Fictional title character/narrator in a series of African American folktales

Vibrant, fascinating stories of Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear, compiled by Joel Chandler Harris, published in 1881, and sometimes compared to Aesop's Fables.
8. Name the Grateful Dead song(s): A) Uncle John's Band B) Fantasy Rock C) Me And My Uncle. (Remember the quiz title).

Answer: A and C

Fantasy Rock is not a Dead song (and has nothing to do with uncles!) 'Uncle John's Band' is from the 1970 "Working Man's Dead" album. 'Me And My Uncle' is on the skull and roses double album (1971) and was written by John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas, supposedly during a wild night of drinking with Judy Collins, Neil Young and others.
9. The groundbreaking, controversial, anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, "Uncle Tom's Cabin," altered the way many Americans, and others, saw slavery. When did it first appear in print?

Answer: 1851

Stowe, the daughter of a preacher, was an ardent abolitionist who helped fugitive slaves to freedom and wrote her book to help rid the country of what she saw as an inherently evil system, which treated people as property. She drew on her experiences as a young adult living in Cincinnati, across the Ohio River from Kentucky, a slave state.
10. I'm 10 years old, horsing around with my father's 6'2" brother, and he gets me in a headlock. How do I concede, and get him to stop?

Answer: Just say "uncle"

Like so many of these common idioms and phrases, the origin of this one is questionable, perhaps arising from use as far back as ancient Rome, when the paternal uncle was accorded great respect, and the bully would demand the surrenderer to call him "mi patruissimo," my best uncle.
