Marie Josephine of Savoy was a princess of Savoy via birth and after her marriage to the future Louis XVIII, she was simply known as the Comtesse de Provence (English: Countess of Provence). The couple had no children.

The Princess de Lamballe despite being the early favourite of Marie Antoinette was replaced later by the Duchesse de Polignac after she and Marie Antoinette met. Josepha of Bavaria was the first wife of Joseph II, eldest brother to Marie Antoinette. Marie Josephine of Savoy was the doomed wife of Louis XVIII. The Duchesse de Polignac although six years older than Marie Antoinette was the long time favourite and later governess to the royal children after she met Marie Antoinette in 1775.

The Duchesse de Polignac was born into a well-established aristocratic family that had fallen on harder times by the time of Gabrielle's birth. She was known as one of the great beauties of her time, however her frivolity, extravagance and exclusivity earned her a great deal of enemies.
