Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On August 23, 1995 An Marchal (17) and Eefje Lambrecks (19) disappeared during their summer holiday. They were kidnapped by Dutroux and his partner Michel Lelièvre after visiting a hypnosis show. Who was the hypnotist on stage that day?

Answer: Rasti Rostelli

Because An and Eefje participated in an hypnosis act on stage during the show, Rasti Rostelli was suspected of being involved in their disappearance, but he was cleared from suspicion after a while.

Much of what happened after An and Eefje left the hypnosis show on the night of August 22nd is still unknown, but it's certain that they missed the last tram and decided to hitchhike. They were picked up by Dutroux and his partner Lelièvre, who were cruising with the intention of kidnapping some girls.
2. During the kidnapping of An and Eefje, Dutroux's car broke down, forcing him to hide the girls in the bushes and leave them with Lelièvre, while Dutroux himself went to get another car.

Answer: True

Although it seems pretty unbelievable, this is exactly what happened! An and Eefje were unconscious because of a fair amount of Rohypnol that the men had forced them to take, so they had to be dragged into the bushes. Dutroux got a ride home from two Irish guys, and returned with another car to pick up Lelièvre and the girls. An and Eefje were kept in the bedroom of Dutroux's house in Marcinelle, because the basement was already occupied by two other victims, Julie and Mélissa.

After being raped time after time and almost starved to death, An and Eefje were killed, probably in the early September days of 1995.

Their bodies were found a year later in Jumet, in the backyard of a house that belonged to Bernard Weinstein, one of Dutroux's accomplices. Evidence suggests that Eefje was buried alive.
3. When searching Dutroux's house, police investigators heard the voices of little girls. They thought there were children playing outside and ignored the voices. It later turned out that they had heard two girls that were locked up in Dutroux's basement. What were the names of the two girls that had been so close to being rescued?

Answer: Julie & Mélissa

Eight-year old Julie Lejeune and Mélissa Russo were kidnapped on June 24, 1995 in the Walloon town of Grâce-Hollogne. Although it's never become clear who kidnapped them, Dutroux has confessed to locking them in a cage in his basement and raping them several times.

When Dutroux was arrested for car fraud and sent to prison for four months he left the girls in his basement, in the dark, without heating and without sufficient food and water. When one of the police investigators heard voices, he yelled "Be quiet!".

He was trying to silence his men, so he could determine where the voices came from, but Julie and Mélissa probably heard him as well, and stopped their calls for help. Dutroux claims the girls were still alive when he was released from prison.

The fact is that they were dead within days of his return. In August 1996 their bodies were found in the backyard of one of Dutroux's houses.
4. Before Marc Dutroux became infamous in the mid-90s he had already been in prison on more than one occasion. In 1992 Dutroux was paroled after serving only three years of a 13-year sentence. What was the sentence for?

Answer: Rape

Dutroux and his second wife, Michelle Martin, were both convicted of raping several young girls. They were released from prison after having served only a fraction of their sentence. You can imagine the anger of the Belgian people when they realised that this had given Dutroux this opportunity to continue his sex crimes.
5. Almost a year after the first disappearances, 12-year-old Sabine Dardenne was abducted and locked up in Dutroux's dungeon. Two and a half months later, in August 1996, Dutroux kidnapped Laetitia Delhez (14) because Sabine "needed a friend". Within a week Dutroux was arrested and the girls were rescued, alive. What caused this break-through?

Answer: A witness saw a van when Laetitia was kidnapped and remembered part of the license plate.

After the tip-off Dutroux and his wife were arrested and police investigators searched Dutroux's house. They didn't find the two girls that were kept in a concealed cage in the basement. Two days later, on the 15th of August, Dutroux confessed and the girls were rescued. Sabine and Laetitia both testified against Marc Dutroux in court.
6. The Dutroux case was a case full of mistakes, oversights and cover-ups. Which of the following events did NOT happen?

Answer: All of these things happened

In April 1998 Dutroux managed to escape from prison, which caused two Belgian ministers to resign. He was re-arrested four hours after his escape. More than 15 potential witnesses died shortly before testifying. Car crashes, a shooting, a train accident, you name it.
The blunders that were made in the Dutroux case caused one of Belgium's largest protest marches ever.
7. In March 2004 Marc Dutroux's trial started. Facing charges for multiple murders, kidnappings and rapes Dutroux denied any responsibility. He claimed voices in his head had made him commit the crimes.

Answer: False

Dutroux didn't mention any voices. He did however claim to be part of a Europe-wide paedophile ring that had "forced" him to abduct the girls, but no evidence was ever found to sustain this claim.
8. Where was the Dutroux trial held?

Answer: Arlon

Arlon wasn't really prepared for Belgium's "trial of the century". With over 500 reporters invading the small Walloon town, its 5 hotels were quickly booked out. In the court room Dutroux and his co-defendants were seated behind bullet-proof glass that had been installed specially for the trial.
9. Together in the dock with Marc Dutroux were three of his accomplices. Who was NOT tried?

Answer: Bernard Weinstein

Although he was originally one of Dutroux's partners in crime, Bernard Weinstein wasn't tried in Arlon. The reason? He was no longer alive! His body was found in the back yard of Dutroux's house in Sars-la-Buissière, where Dutroux had buried him alive.
10. On June 22, 2004 Marc Dutroux was sentenced to life in prison, which means that his first possibility for release will be in 2027.

Answer: True

Theoretically Dutroux could be out of prison by 2027, at the age of 71. Considering how the Belgians feels about him it's not very likely that this will happen.
Michelle Martin was sentenced to 30 years in prison and Michel Lelièvre got 25 years. Michel Nihoul was acquitted of being an accomplice in the kidnappings and murders, and got a 5-year sentence for drug related crimes.
